२- अदर्शनं लोपः।2. adarśanaṁ lopaḥ.न दर्शनम्- अदर्शनम्, अदर्शनं प्रथमान्तं, लोपः प्रथमान्तं द्विपदमिदं सूत्रम्।na darśanam — adarśanam; adarśanam is in the nominative (prathamā) case and lopaḥ is in the nominative case, so this sūtra consists of two words.
( पहले ) विद्यमान का ( बाद में ) अदर्शन होना, न सुना जाना लोपसंज्ञक ( लोपसंज्ञा वाला ) होता है।The non-appearance (later) — the not being heard — of what was present (earlier) takes the name lopa (lopa-saṁjñā).
लोक में लोप का एक अर्थ नाश भी होता है किन्तु पाणिनीय-व्याकरण-शास्त्र में लोप का अर्थ अदर्शन माना गया है।In common usage lopa also has the meaning of destruction (nāśa), but in the Pāṇinian science of grammar the meaning of lopa is held to be adarśana (non-appearance).अदर्शन अर्थात् जो न दीखे, जो न सुनाई पड़े।Adarśana means that which is not seen, that which is not heard.
वस्तुतः शब्द कभी दीखता नहीं है, अतः अदर्शन का अर्थ अश्रवण करना चाहिए।In reality a word (śabda) is never seen, and therefore the meaning of adarśana should be taken to be aśravaṇa (non-hearing).इसीलिए जो पहले सुनाई देता था और अब वह न सुनाई दे तो उसे लोप कहते हैं।For this reason, when something that was heard before is now no longer heard, that is called lopa.तात्पर्य यह है कि जो पहले से था किन्तु बाद में किसी सूत्र आदि के द्वारा लुप्त हो जाय तो वह न तो कहीं दिखाई पड़ेगा और न ही वह सुनाई पड़ेगा।The purport is this: whatever existed before but later becomes elided (lupta) by some sūtra and the like will then neither be seen anywhere nor be heard.जो पहले से था उसी का ही लोप होता है, जो पहले से नहीं था, उसका क्या लोप करें! इस प्रकार से यह सिद्ध हुआ कि पाणिनीय-व्याकरण में किसी भी अक्षर या शब्द का विनाश नहीं होता।Only that which existed before undergoes lopa — of what did not exist before, what lopa could one make! — and in this way it is established that in Pāṇinian grammar there is no destruction of any letter (akṣara) or word (śabda) whatsoever.जहाँ-जहाँ भी लोप का विधान किया गया वहाँ-वहाँ अदर्शन मात्र समझना चाहिए।Wherever lopa has been prescribed, there one should understand merely adarśana (non-appearance).यह सूत्र केवल लोप क्या है? इतना ही बताता है किन्तु लोप नहीं करता।This sūtra only tells what lopa is — just this much — but it does not itself effect any lopa.लोपविधायक विधिसूत्र आगे कहा जा रहा है।The operative rule (vidhi-sūtra) that prescribes lopa is being stated further on.
