harir nava-ghanākṛtiḥ prati-vadhū-dvayaṁ madhyatas
harirHari [Kṛṣṇa] — the dancer at the centreकृष्ण (हरि)
nava-ghanākṛtiḥdark-bodied like a fresh raincloud bahuvrīhi: nava-ghana (new raincloud) + ākṛti (form) — 'whose form has the hue of a new raincloud'जिनकी आकृति नये मेघ के समान श्यामवर्ण है
prati-vadhū-dvayaṁat each pair of brides — one Kṛṣṇa for every two avyayībhāva with distributive prati (vīpsā): 'in every pair of vadhūs'हर एक वधू-युगल में
madhyatasright in the middle of themठीक बीचोंबीच
asau harir — this Hari; nava-ghana-ākṛtiḥ — dark as a fresh raincloud; prati-vadhū-dvayaṁ madhyataḥ — in the middle of each pair of brides.
Hari, dark as a fresh raincloud, stands in the very middle of every pair of brides.
The udāharaṇa of rāsa — the circle-dance as a form of sambhoga-śṛṅgāra, opened by the lead-in 'atha rāsaḥ, yathā' (UN 15.232). The four lines are one wonder-struck speech (see the commentary: a sky-borne goddess pointing the dance out to a companion).

His arms lie shining on the shoulders of each two. And here is the wonder: though he is only one, he whirls between every pair at once.

vadhūḥ ca — and the bride; taḍit-ujjvalā — lightning-bright; prati-hari-dvayaṁ madhyataḥ — in the middle of each pair of Haris.
And the bride, for her part, blazes like lightning. She too stands in the middle — of every pair of Kṛṣṇa's forms. The verse turns the same marvel around: as one Hari is between each two brides, each bride is between each two Haris.
The line's headline is a śleṣa-parallel: 'prati-vadhū-dvayaṁ' (one Hari amid each pair of brides) is mirrored by 'prati-hari-dvayaṁ' (each bride amid each pair of Haris). The one Kṛṣṇa has multiplied so a form seems to stand on either side of every gopī — the classic rāsa geometry of Bhāgavata 10.33.

harir itinamely the verse beginning 'harir…' iti names the verse being introduced'हरिः' इत्यादि श्लोक (जिसका परिचय दिया जा रहा है)
vimāna-cāriṇī kācit devī — a certain goddess moving in a vimāna; kām api — to some other; āha — speaks; harir iti — the verse 'harir…'.
Viśvanātha sets the scene. A goddess riding a vimāna across the sky says these words to another goddess: 'harir…'. So the whole verse is one goddess pointing the dance out to her companion.

A key restriction: 'bride' here does not mean every gopī. It means only the yūtheśvarī, the leader of a gopī-band.
yūthapā / yūtheśvarī: the chief gopī who heads a whole band (yūtha) of sakhīs. The verse counts these leaders, not the rank and file — so 'each pair of brides' is each pair of band-leaders.

So the positions come out like this: on Kṛṣṇa's left stands the yūtheśvarī, and on his right stands that same leader's one chief sakhī — whose left hand goes behind Kṛṣṇa to hold the leader's right hand.

In this way a fault is thrown out. If Kṛṣṇa simply flung his arms onto the two women's shoulders, you would need Kṛṣṇa and a second form each laying an arm on the woman beside them. Reading the sakhī as the one who holds the hand behind Kṛṣṇa's back removes that fault.

The same reading fixes the famous Bhāgavata line, 'held by the neck by [Kṛṣṇa] who entered between each pair.' Take it this way: each woman is held at the neck by one single prakāśa of Kṛṣṇa — one form to one woman — not by two forms, Kṛṣṇa on one side and a prakāśa on the other.

One more point. Around each leader, on her two sides, place gopīs of the friendly party (suhṛt-pakṣa) and the neutral party (taṭastha-pakṣa). Nothing about this spoils the easy, natural harmony of the dance, so it may be assumed.

Or else — take it a second way. In each band, however many sakhīs there are, no single one is fixed as chief. So all of them, by turns, play both roles — heroine and companion — standing now on the left, now on the right. Only when one band's fitting arrangement is complete does the next band take up the same pattern. This reading is left standing beside the first, not chosen over it.

And so, once we settle that both lotus-hands of the eternal heroines are held by their own sakhīs — one sakhī on each side — two things are secured. First, the highest natural harmony of the dance. Second, that every single gopī stands inside the rāsa circle, none left out. On that note he closes.
