L1definition
jalpaḥ parasparaṁ goṣṭhī vitathoktiś ca kathyate ||
jalpaḥjalpa — the kind of jealous-love speech now being definedजल्प (जिस भेद का नाम बताया जा रहा है)
parasparaṁ goṣṭhīmutual conversation — the two talking back and forth to each other parasparaṁ = with each other; goṣṭhī = talk, chatआपस में की जाने वाली बातचीत
vitathoktiḥ caand untrue speech — saying the opposite of what is really meant ca joins the second limb; vitatha = false/contrary, ukti = utteranceऔर (उसमें) मिथ्या अर्थात् उलटी व्यंग्य-उक्ति भी ('ca' दूसरे अंग को जोड़ता है)
kathyateis what it is called(यह) कहलाता है
jalpaḥ — jalpa; parasparaṁ goṣṭhī — mutual conversation; vitathoktiḥ ca — and false, ironic speech; kathyate — is declared to be.
jalpaḥ — जल्प; parasparaṁ — परस्पर; goṣṭhī — गोष्ठी, बातचीत; vitatha-uktiḥ — मिथ्या/उलटी उक्ति; ca — और; kathyate — कहा जाता है।
Jalpa is defined by two things together: mutual conversation, the lovers talking back and forth, and vitathokti — speech that says the opposite of what is truly meant, ironic or barbed. That pair is what the word jalpa names.
प्रेमी-प्रेमिका की परस्पर बातचीत, जिसमें उलटी व्यंग्यपूर्ण उक्ति भी हो, उसे 'जल्प' कहते हैं। यहाँ दो बातें एक साथ हैं — आपसी वार्ता और उसमें छिपा हुआ मिथ्या ताना।
The lakṣaṇa (defining verse) of jalpa; the two lines that follow are its udāharaṇa (illustration). The 'ironic false speech' half of the definition is exactly what makes the example a double-edged taunt.
यह जल्प का लक्षण-श्लोक है; इसके आगे की दो पंक्तियाँ इसका उदाहरण हैं। परिभाषा का 'मिथ्या-उक्ति' वाला अंश ही उदाहरण को दुधारा ताना बना देता है।

nakula-strīṇāṁof the wives of the mongoose (nakula) śleṣa: the same syllables also split as na + kula-strīṇāṁ, 'of chaste family-women'नकुल की स्त्रियों का (श्लेष: वही अक्षर 'न + कुल-स्त्रीणां' = कुलीन/सती स्त्रियों का — यों भी बँटते हैं)
dharṣaṇein the forcing / overpowering of them locative of the act in which capability is being questioned; dharṣaṇa = assault, ravishingधर्षण अर्थात् आक्रमण करने में (जिस काम में सामर्थ्य पूछी जा रही है)
bhujaṅgeśaḥthe lord of serpents śleṣa: bhujaṅga = snake, but also a paramour/rake, so 'king of rakes'भुजंगेश (श्लेष: भुजंग = सर्प, पर 'जार/छैला' भी — अतः 'छैलों का राजा')
kṣamaḥ kathamhow is he even capable? — i.e., he is notकैसे समर्थ है?
nakula-strīṇāṁ dharṣaṇe — in forcing the mongoose's wives; bhujaṅgeśaḥ — the serpent-king; kṣamaḥ katham — how could he be capable?
nakula-strīṇāṁ — नकुल/कुल-स्त्रियों का; dharṣaṇe — धर्षण करने में; bhujaṅgeśaḥ — भुजंगेश (सर्पराज/छैलों का राजा); kṣamaḥ katham — कैसे समर्थ?
On the plain surface: 'How could the king of serpents ever be capable of forcing himself on the wives of the mongoose?' But every key word carries a second sense (śleṣa): nakula-strī re-splits as 'na kula-strī,' chaste family-women, and bhujaṅga also means a rake — so underneath runs 'how could the arch-rake force himself on chaste wives?' The two commentators unfold both layers.
इन नकुल की स्त्रियों पर आक्रमण करने में यह भुजंगेश कैसे समर्थ है? श्लेष से नीचे यह भी सुनाई देता है — कुलीन स्त्रियों को छेड़ने में यह छैलों का राजा कैसे समर्थ? दोनों पाठ एक साथ खुले रहते हैं।
First line of the udāharaṇa (example verse) for jalpa (15.226). It is spoken — so Viśvanātha — by Rādhā to Kṛṣṇa at the dāna-ghaṭṭa (the toll-scene where he blocks the gopīs). The whole verse is a śleṣa: an innocent snake-and-mongoose riddle on top, an accusation that Kṛṣṇa is a rake underneath — exactly the ironic 'vitathokti' the definition called for.

'...since, biting these with his fangs, he gets no good of it.' In the animal reading the serpent who bites mongoose-wives wins nothing — they bite back and he dies on the spot. But the very syllables 'daśan nāpnoti' can be recut as 'daśan (prā)pnoti,' 'biting, he does obtain,' and maṅgala read as the prize of the exploit — so in the accusation reading the rake, by his 'biting,' does get his prize. Both chedas are live; the verse leaves them suspended.
क्योंकि इन्हें दाँतों से काटता हुआ यह कोई मंगल नहीं पाता। यही हेतु ऊपर पूछे प्रश्न का उत्तर है। पर 'नाप्नोति' के अक्षर 'प्राप्नोति' के रूप में भी कट सकते हैं, जिससे अर्थ उलटकर 'पा ही लेता है' हो जाता है।

Jīva: here, in these two lines, Rūpa gives the 'mutual conversation' side of jalpa — the example that opens 'dharṣaṇena…' So he reads the example as illustrating the goṣṭhī limb of the definition.
यहाँ ग्रन्थकार दो पंक्तियों के द्वारा परस्पर बातचीत का उदाहरण देते हैं। इसी को 'धर्षेणेन' इत्यादि पंक्ति से आरम्भ करते हैं।
The pratīka is printed 'dharṣeṇena,' a slip for dharṣaṇena; the verse itself has dharṣaṇe.

daśan eva maṅgalaṁ prāpnoti iti arthaḥ — the sense is: precisely by biting, he obtains the good.
daśan eva maṅgalaṁ prāpnoti — काटता हुआ ही मंगल पा लेता है; iti arthaḥ — ऐसा अर्थ।
So the accusation lands: it is precisely by 'biting' — forcing himself on them — that the rake wins his prize. That is Jīva's reading of the barb.
इस पाठ में वह इन्हें काटता हुआ ही मंगल पा लेता है — अर्थात् वही धृष्टता उसका मंगल बन जाती है।
Across s2–s9 Jīva lays out three readings of the one verse: the rake who wins no good (na āpnoti), the snake-king who wins none either, and — flipping the split to prāpnoti — the rake who wins exactly what he is after. The ironic surface and the real charge are held together by the śleṣa.
स२–स९ में जीव एक ही श्लोक के तीन पाठ खोलते हैं: वह छैला जो कोई भला नहीं पाता (न आप्नोति), वह सर्पराज जो भी कुछ नहीं पाता, और — छेद को 'प्राप्नोति' में पलटकर — वह छैला जो ठीक वही पा लेता है जो वह चाहता है। ऊपरी व्यंग्य और भीतरी आरोप दोनों को श्लेष एक साथ थामे रखता है।

arthāntara-nyāsa ('substantiation'): a figure in which a particular statement is confirmed by a general truth (or the reverse). Achieved here through śleṣa — a single set of words carrying two meanings at once.
अर्थान्तरन्यास वह अलंकार है जिसमें किसी विशेष कथन की पुष्टि किसी सामान्य सत्य से (या इसके विपरीत) होती है। यहाँ यह श्लेष से सधता है — एक ही शब्द-समूह दो अर्थ एक साथ वहन करता है।

jantu-viśeṣaḥa particular creature — namely the mongooseएक विशेष प्राणी
nakulaḥ sarpa-dviṭ jantu-viśeṣaḥ — nakula is a particular animal, the snake's enemy [the mongoose].
nakulaḥ — नकुल; sarpa-dviṭ — सर्प का शत्रु; jantu-viśeṣaḥ — एक विशेष प्राणी।
Now Viśvanātha turns to the other layer of the śleṣa: nakula is a specific animal, the snake's natural foe — the mongoose.
नकुल अर्थात् नेवला — जो सर्प का शत्रु है, एक विशेष प्राणी है।

And the accusation reading has its own parallel śleṣa: even in the animal frame, run it the other way — 'in forcing the mongoose-wives, the KING of serpents, how is he not capable?' He is. The word tu quietly sets the king apart from the common run of snakes.
