L1definition
durlabhālokayor yūnoḥ pāratantryād viyuktayoḥ |
durlabhālokayoḥof the pair for whom even a glimpse of each other is hard to win genitive dual, qualifying yūnoḥ — durlabha 'won only with difficulty' + āloka 'seeing one another'जिन दोनों का परस्पर दर्शन (आलोक) बड़ी कठिनाई से ही मिलता है
yūnoḥof the young couple — the youthful hero and heroine genitive dual of yuvanउन तरुण (नायक-नायिका) का
pāratantryātbecause they are under others' control — held apart by guardians ablative of cause; para-tantra 'in another's power'पराधीनता के कारण (क्योंकि वे दूसरे के वश में हैं)
viyuktayoḥwho are therefore kept parted genitive dual, agreeing with yūnoḥजो एक-दूसरे से वियुक्त (बिछड़े हुए) हैं
durlabhālokayoḥ yūnoḥ — of the young couple who can scarcely catch sight of each other; pāratantryāt — because they are under others' control; viyuktayoḥ — kept parted.
Take a young hero and heroine who can barely even glimpse one another, and who are held apart because they are in the power of others — guardians who keep them separated. This first line sets up the case; the second line will name it. This is the lakṣaṇa, the definition.
L2definition
upabhogātireko yaḥ kīrtyate sa samṛddhimān ||
upabhogātirekaḥthe surplus of enjoyment — the reunion that runs over to excess nominative; upabhoga 'enjoyment' + atireka 'overflow, going-beyond'उपभोग (मिलन-सुख) की जो अतिशयता (बढ़-चढ़कर आधिक्य) है
yaḥ ... saḥthe [enjoyment] which ... that relative-correlative frame: 'that which is proclaimed X is Y'जो...वही
kīrtyateis proclaimed, is called passive, √kīrtकहा जाता है (√कीर्त्, कर्मवाच्य)
samṛddhimān[is] samṛddhimān, 'the enriched' [union]समृद्धिमान् (नामक सम्भोग)
yaḥ upabhogātirekaḥ kīrtyate — the surplus of enjoyment that is proclaimed [in such a couple]; saḥ samṛddhimān — that is 'the enriched' union.
When such a couple — hard even to see each other, kept apart by dependence on others — at last reach a reunion whose enjoyment runs to excess, that overflowing union is called samṛddhimān, 'the enriched.' So the definition is complete across the two lines.
samṛddhimān is the fourth and highest of the sub-types of sambhoga (union): saṅkṣipta ('brief'), saṅkīrṇa ('mixed'), sampanna ('accomplished'), and this samṛddhimān ('enriched') — named because the long, hard-won bar to meeting makes the reunion richest of all.

Jīva opens: this being settled, once Kṛṣṇa's all-surpassing supremacy has been established by yoga-māyā's power, Rūpa now shows it by a definition. He decodes the compound: durlabha = 'won only with great difficulty,' and āloka = their very seeing of each other — even a glimpse is hard. The cause of that hardness is pāratantrya, dependence: being under the sway of whatever blocks their meeting; he reads it as the ablative 'source' from which the separation flows. Now, for such a parted couple, the surplus enjoyment of finally seeing each other overtops the three earlier sub-types (saṅkṣipta, saṅkīrṇa, sampanna). Why the surplus? Because a long separation, crossing great distance, works like keen hunger — it makes the taste of reunion uniquely sharp. That, says Jīva, is samṛddhimān.

Jīva restates it plainly: 'because of dependence' means the two have fallen into separation on account of that dependence. He fixes pāratantrya as the reason for their being parted.

And this reading is needed, says Jīva: otherwise the definition would not hold, because then nothing would mark samṛddhimān off from the lower types saṅkṣipta and the rest. The dependence-caused parting is exactly what gives it its distinguishing feature.

Jīva presses the point: the single word durlabhāloka — and the fact that they do finally win that sight — already shows this parting-through-dependence. And in showing it, the author lets the opposite case, freedom-from-dependence (apāratantrya), come into view by contrast. The next line supplies an example of that free case.

And Jīva points to a verse-line that illustrates the free, wedded case: 'the wives who wait on their beloved, unconstrained, day after day.' That is the svīyā (wedded) situation — service without any bar. He sets it beside samṛddhimān to sharpen the contrast: there the women are free; here the couple is held apart by dependence.

Why cited: quoted as an illustration of the svīyā (wedded) case — women who serve their beloved freely and daily — set against samṛddhimān, whose lovers are kept apart by dependence, so the distinguishing 'dependence' stands out.

Jīva closes the point: what sets the dependence-parted lovers apart from women who were free all along is the maxim 'without separation, union never fattens into its fullness' — vipralambha is what feeds sambhoga. And, he adds, this will be borne out by an illustration further on: it is indeed just so.

Viśvanātha gives his own gloss, and already tips his reading. The young pair, hero and heroine — he stresses both of them — are separated by a far-off journey. Their dependence on others is what makes even seeing each other hard (durlabhāloka); it is the cause of the difficulty, not of the parting itself. The surplus of enjoyment such a couple reach is the samṛddhimān union. (Note the wedge from Jīva: for Jīva pāratantrya causes the parting; for Viśvanātha it causes only the hardness of meeting.)

Viśvanātha draws a line between the lower unions and this one. In the sampanna and earlier types, it is not the dependence of both lovers that makes meeting hard — only the heroine's. She alone is under the thumb of her mother-in-law, the man who counts himself her husband, her father, and the rest, and it is they who keep her back. So there the constraint is one-sided.

And so, Viśvanātha says, when the difficulty comes from her being restrained and controlled, the surplus of enjoyment follows. He recalls proofs already given earlier in the work — 'because much is forbidden her,' 'where there is a special prohibition,' 'the great rarity that belongs to the doe-eyed women' — all making the same point: the more a thing is barred, the sweeter it becomes.
Why cited: earlier UN authorities recalled to establish that forbiddenness and restraint are exactly what breed the surplus enjoyment of samṛddhimān.

The word 'because of dependence' does real work, Viśvanātha notes: it rules out a different kind of hard-to-meet — the kind that arises when the two are in a māna, a jealous sulk. Here the bar is external dependence, not a lovers' quarrel.

pāratantrya-rāhitya-adarśanāt — since no freedom from dependence is seen there; pratyuta pāratantrya-paramāvadhitvam eva tat-kathāyāṁ dṛṣṭaṁ — on the contrary, dependence at its utmost is seen in that story; yatra datta-śapathā nava-vṛndā api rahasyaṁ vaktuṁ na prabhavati — where even Nava-vṛndā, put under oath, cannot speak the secret.

Far from any freedom from dependence in that story, Viśvanātha says, one sees dependence stretched to its very limit — where even Nava-vṛndā, though bound by an oath, cannot bring herself to reveal the secret. If a confidante is that tightly held, dependence there is total, not absent.
Nava-vṛndā is a confidante-character in Rūpa's Lalita-mādhava; the point is that the constraint on the lovers' circle is at its maximum, not relaxed.

Viśvanātha now sets aside the other construe — 'parted because of dependence as the cause.' Even that reading, he says, does not fit here. (This is the reading Jīva took; Viśvanātha will argue the parting is caused by the far journey, and dependence only makes meeting hard. Do not merge the two — they genuinely differ.)

So 'parted,' Viśvanātha insists, has to be explained as a separation caused by a far journey — Kṛṣṇa's going away to a distant place. That, and not dependence, is what actually splits them apart.

And that far journey is one specific event — Kṛṣṇa's departure for Mathurā, nothing else. So to name dependence as the cause of the parting would be idle: it would single nothing out and do no work. This clinches that dependence must be the cause of the difficulty of meeting, not of the parting itself.

She is asking not for palace and wedlock but for the Vṛndāvana forest and the cowherd-girl (parakīyā) mood.

Viśvanātha decodes the verse word by word. The 'play-words' are the very marks of the rāsa and the other pastimes — these are the 'fragrances'; the forest that breathes them out pervades the land. 'Māthurī' he fixes by grammar: 'Mādhurī' and 'Mathurā' are the same name in two lexical forms, and by the affix aṇ in the sense 'lying near,' the word means 'the land near Mathurā' — the real Śrī Vṛndāvana, a good league or more north of the city. This rules out the imitation Nava-Vṛndāvana built in Dvārakā. The prayer is for the true Vraja, not the Dvārakā replica.
dvirūpa-kośa: a lexicon of words having two accepted spellings/forms (here Mathurā / Mādhurī). The taddhita affix aṇ in the sense adūra-bhava, 'located near' (Pāṇini's 'in the neighborhood of'), turns 'Mathurā' into māthurī = 'the region adjoining Mathurā,' i.e. Vṛndāvana — which is why the Dvārakā Nava-Vṛndāvana cannot be meant.

And here is the key, foregrounded by Viśvanātha: the word caṭulā, 'flighty,' when said of the women, gives away exactly this — that they are wrapped up in a paramour (upapati). Rādhā's own chosen word names the parakīyā love. This is the hinge of his whole refutation: her prayer is for illicit, not wedded, love.

prasiddho vā caṭula-padam evātra tāsāṁ parakīyātvaṁ vyanakticurrent or not, it is the word caṭula that here lays bare their being another's wives parakīyātva 'the status of belonging to another' — the parakīyāप्रसिद्ध हो या न हो, यहाँ 'चटुल' पद ही उनके परकीयात्व (दूसरे की स्त्री होने) को प्रकट करता है
tathā paśūn pānti iti paśupāḥ = gopāḥ, teṣāṁ striyaḥ iti puṁyoge eva ṅīp na tu jātau — likewise paśupa = gopa, and 'their women' takes ṅīp only from the tie to a husband, not as a class-word; hi gopādi-śabdaḥ eva rūḍhaḥ na tu paśupādi-śabdaḥ lokeṣu aprasiddheḥ — for 'gopa' is the fixed term, not 'paśupa' etc., which are not current; prasiddhaḥ vā caṭula-padam eva atra tāsāṁ parakīyātvaṁ vyanakti — current or not, it is 'caṭula' that here reveals their belonging to another.

He adds a grammatical proof. 'Paśupa' (cattle-guard) just means gopa, cowherd; and the feminine paśupī is formed with the suffix ṅīp only when it names a woman by her tie to a husband — a wife-word, not a mere class-word. (Indeed 'gopa' is the ordinary term; 'paśupa' and 'cattle-driver' are not everyday words.) But whether that grammar convinces or not, the decisive word is caṭulā: that alone reveals here that these women belong to another — they are parakīyā, others' wives.
ṅīp in puṁyoga: by the grammarians' rule a feminine is formed by ṅīp/ṅīṣ when a woman is designated through her association with a man (a husband). So paśupī carries the sense 'wife of a paśupa,' presupposing a husband — which suits the parakīyā (another man's wife) reading.

And 'the play' she asks him to take up: the rāsa dance, roaming the forest, the boat-sport, the dāna-līlā toll-game, and all such. These are the free Vṛndāvana pastimes — the parakīyā repertoire, not married domesticity.

So the whole married picture — 'now you are a great king, and I am your wife, your crowned queen, your chaste consort' — is exactly the opposite of what Rādhā longs for. That, Viśvanātha concludes, is the real import of her prayer: she is rejecting wedlock, not asking for it.

First proof, from the Pādma Purāṇa, chapter 32, the Kārttika-māhātmya: 'In childhood they were cowherd-maidens; in youth, princesses.' The same girls who were gopīs became royal princesses — the ones Kṛṣṇa wed in Dvārakā.
Why cited: scriptural warrant that the Vraja cowherd-girls became princesses in womanhood — support for the Dvārakā marriage, not a Vraja one.

Second proof, from the Skānda Purāṇa, Prabhāsa-khaṇḍa, the Gopyāditya-māhātmya, speaking of the crowned queens: 'A full sixteen thousand gopīs assembled there.' Scripture itself equates the sixteen thousand Dvārakā queens with the gopīs. So the Dvārakā marriage is soundly attested.
Why cited: scriptural warrant identifying the sixteen thousand crowned queens of Dvārakā with the assembled gopīs — again support for the Dvārakā marriage only.

Here is Viśvanātha's decisive theology. Just as the Lord of Dvārakā is the 'full manifestation' (pūrṇa-prakāśa) of the 'most-complete' (pūrṇatama) Lord of Vṛndāvana, so the Dvārakā queens — Rukmiṇī, Satyabhāmā and the rest, daughters of Bhīṣmaka, Satrājit and others — are the full-form counterparts of the most-complete Vraja gopīs, who are Kṛṣṇa's own bliss-potency (hlādinī-śakti). So their marriage belongs, fittingly, in Dvārakā. But it can never be told of Vraja, the abode of the pūrṇatama — because then the samarthā-rati (the supreme, unconditioned parakīyā love) would collapse into mere samañjasā-rati (the regular, wedded love). Marriage in Vraja would degrade the highest love itself.
Two paired distinctions carry the argument. pūrṇatama ('most complete,' Vraja-Kṛṣṇa) vs pūrṇa-prakāśa ('full display,' Dvārakā-Kṛṣṇa): the Dvārakā figures are expansions of the Vraja originals. samarthā-rati is the highest love, which disregards all law for Kṛṣṇa's sake (the parakīyā mood of Vraja); samañjasā-rati is the 'regular,' law-abiding wedded love (the queens' mood in Dvārakā). To place a wedding in Vraja would drag samarthā down to samañjasā — hence it is impossible there, fitting only in Dvārakā.

And there is a second reason it cannot be told of Vraja: a wedding there would flatly contradict Rādhā's own prayer to be 'spellbound by the flighty cowherd-girl mood.' Her entreaty asks for parakīyā love; a Vraja marriage would cancel it.

yathā dvārakā-nāthaḥ hi 'vraja-rāja-nandanaḥ eva ahaṁ, samprati vasudeva-sūnuḥ dvārakāyām asmi' iti abhimanyate, tathā tatra eva paṭṭa-mahiṣyaḥ api 'candrabhānv-ādi-sutāḥ candrāvaly-ādyāḥ eva vayaṁ, samprati bhīṣmakādi-sutāḥ śrī-kṛṣṇena vyūḍhāḥ eva abhūma' iti abhimanyate — as the Dvārakā Lord inwardly holds 'I am really Vraja's prince, now Vasudeva's son,' so the queens hold 'we are really Candrāvalī and the rest, now Bhīṣmaka's daughters wedded by Kṛṣṇa.'
He seals it with an analogy of inner identity. Just as the Lord of Dvārakā secretly holds, 'I am really the son of Vraja's king; only now am I Vasudeva's son in Dvārakā' — so the crowned queens secretly hold, 'we are really Candrāvalī and the other daughters of Candrabhānu; only now are we the daughters of Bhīṣmaka and the rest, wedded by Kṛṣṇa.' The mapping is exact: Dvārakā-Kṛṣṇa's true self is Vraja-Kṛṣṇa, and each queen's true self is her Vraja gopī. The Dvārakā wedded forms look back to the Vraja parakīyā originals as their reality.

And just as Kṛṣṇa reckons his Vṛndāvana pastimes the higher, so the queens too reckon the flighty cowherd-girl mood the higher — because its rasa is greater. Both the Lord and his consorts look back to the Vraja parakīyā love as the richest of all. 'So much by way of a hint,' Viśvanātha closes.
