atha — now; caturṇāṁ vipralambhānāṁ yathākramaṁ — for the four separations, each in turn; tāpa-śamakeṣu caturṣu sambhogeṣu — among the four unions that cool their heat; pūrvarāga-tāpa-nirvāpakaḥ saṅkṣiptaḥ — the saṅkṣipta puts out pūrvarāga's heat; māna-tāpa-śamanaḥ saṅkīrṇaḥ — the saṅkīrṇa quells māna's heat.
Now there are four kinds of separation, and matched to them, in order, four kinds of union that cool each one's fever. The saṅkṣipta union puts out the heat of pūrvarāga, the love felt before meeting; the saṅkīrṇa union quells the heat of māna, the sulking quarrel.

And the sampanna union puts out the pravāsa — the separation of Kṛṣṇa having gone away from his own Vraja. That is the sequence already laid down.

Likewise the samṛddhimān union — destroyer of that long, unbearable separation described again and again — still needs to be stated. This is the union the verse will now name.

To spell it out: the saṅkṣipta has only the first sprout of closeness, so the saṅkīrṇa — made of deep closeness — is by that much finer; and the sampanna is finer still than that. The measure throughout is how close the lovers already are.

Take the example of sugarcane juice: boil it down with heat and it turns far sweeter. From that heightened relish we understand the surplus of sweetness in this union. In the analogy the cane juice is the love, the heat is the separation, and the extra sweetness is the deepened relish of the union that follows. It proves this much: the fiercer the prior separation, the sweeter the meeting.

Just as extreme hunger makes food taste better than its own flavor ever could, so separation — playing the part of that hunger — becomes the very cause of relish. The hunger is the separation, the food is the union, the sharpened taste is the heightened rasa.

If mere hunger-likeness is enough to make any separation the cause of relish, how much more the pravāsa — that long, distant separation joined to a love grown, stage by stage, to its full pitch! So its union, the samṛddhimān, tastes sweetest of all.

So then: with the sampanna's superiority over the other two now settled, and since the far-off, long pravāsa stands in for hunger even more than they do, the special relish of the samṛddhimān is plain. It cools the heat of pūrvarāga and the rest just as the saṅkṣipta and the others do, yet it outranks them all — so it simply must be described. On that footing Rūpa now states the union named samṛddhimān.

The verse's own words — 'nirbhara' (overflowing), 'parama' (supreme), 'avadhi' (the very limit) — make the point: do not suspect this samṛddhimān of being any less than the sampanna-union. Just the reverse: they signal that it is greater.

nanu vaipralambhika-sphūrti-prāptena śrī-kṛṣṇena saha sambhogasya asya katham etāvān utkarṣaḥ — objection: how can union with a Kṛṣṇa met only in a separation-vision be so exalted?; tatra na iyaṁ sphūrtiḥ kintu sphūrtitaḥ asya vailakṣaṇyaṁ mahat eva — reply: this is no mere vision; its distinction from a vision is great; iti āha—dviguṇā iti — so he says, 'dviguṇā.'
One may object: if this union is only with a Kṛṣṇa reached through a separation-born vision, how can it rank so high? The answer: this is not a mere vision at all. Its difference from a vision is in fact great — and to make that clear Rūpa says, 'dviguṇā…': at a vision the pain only doubles, whereas at the real appearing there is a festival of joy.

anurāgaje sphuraṇe — at the anurāga-born vision; anurāgotthāyāṁ sphūrtau — that is, in the sphūrti rising from anurāga; kānta-saṅga-sukhānantaram iti arthaḥ — meaning, just after the joy of union with the beloved.
'At the vision born of anurāga' — that is, in the sphūrti that rises out of anurāga; the sense is, right after the joy of the beloved's embrace. It is there that the pain of separation doubles.
Viśvanātha's text reads anurāgaje ('born of anurāga') where the mūla printed here has veṇu-rāgaje ('born of flute-roused love'); he decodes the verse on his own reading.

By this the distinction is made plain: at the culmination of anurāga there is only a sphūrti — a vision of Kṛṣṇa; but at mahābhāva there is prādurbhāva — his real appearing. Vision belongs to anurāga, real presence to mahābhāva.
