Viśvanātha unpacks the verse word by word. 'Of the young couple' = the heroine and hero, who are each other's viṣaya and āśraya — each at once the beloved object and the loving seat for the other. Their 'enjoyment' (niṣevā) is the full-hearted practice of seeing, embracing, kissing, and so on, carried on in the refined manner set out in the love-manuals of Vātsyāyana and Bharata. Read this way, mere animal-like coupling — union without such art — is shut out from śṛṅgāra.
viṣaya and āśraya are the two poles of a rasa: the viṣaya is the person the love is aimed at, the āśraya the one in whom the love lives — as, in ordinary love, one partner is viṣaya and the other āśraya. Viśvanātha makes the couple mutually both. Vātsyāyana is the author of the Kāma-sūtra; Bharata, of the Nāṭya-śāstra — the śāstras that codify the kalās, the arts of love.

ānukūlyāt paraspara-sukha-tātparyakatvena pārasparikād ity arthaḥ |
ānukūlyātthe verse's 'favorably' — the lemma being glossed'आनुकूल्यात्' अर्थात्
paraspara-sukha-tātparyakatvenabecause [the enjoyment] is bent on each other's happiness instr. of cause; -tātparyaka 'having as its aim' + -tvena 'in that it...'
pārasparikādmeans: out of mutuality abl.; ānukūlya resolved as pārasparika, 'reciprocal', not self-directedपारस्परिक (परस्पर) अनुकूलता के कारण
ity arthaḥthat is the senseऐसा अर्थ है
ānukūlyāt = pārasparikāt — 'favorably' means 'out of mutuality'; paraspara-sukha-tātparyakatvena — because it aims at each other's happiness; iti arthaḥ — this is the meaning.
Now 'ānukūlyāt.' Viśvanātha reads it as pārasparika — mutual: the enjoyment is favorable because it aims at each other's happiness, not one's own alone. That is its meaning.

svānukūlye vyākhyeye vyāvṛtty-abhāvāt |
svānukūlye vyākhyeyewere one instead to explain it as sva-ānukūlya, favorableness toward oneself loc. absolute — 'if it were to be so explained'यदि इसे अपनी ही अनुकूलता (आत्मानुकूलता) के रूप में समझाया जाए, तो
vyāvṛtty-abhāvātthen the exclusion [of lust] would fall away — for lust too pleases oneself abl. of cause; this is the reason the mutual reading is required(काममय संभोग की) निवृत्ति न हो पाने के कारण
svānukūlye vyākhyeye — if it were explained as self-favorableness; vyāvṛtti-abhāvāt — because [then] there would be no exclusion.
Why insist on 'mutual'? Because if 'ānukūlya' meant only sva-ānukūlya — pleasing to oneself — then nothing would be excluded: lust, too, pleases oneself. Only the mutual reading does the work of ruling lust out. So he holds to it.

And so, on this mutual reading, even the famous worldly love-scenes of the poeticians get shut out — like the verse 'niḥśeṣa-cyuta-candana...' that the Kāvya-prakāśa and other manuals cite. However celebrated as poetry, that union is prākṛta, mundane, and kāma-maya, lust-based; it is not the sambhoga defined here.

'niḥśeṣa-cyuta-candanam...' is a well-known śṛṅgāra verse quoted by Mammaṭa in the Kāvya-prakāśa as a specimen of the erotic mood. Viśvanātha names it only to set it outside the sambhoga of devotional rasa.
