L1definition
vyājena bhūṣaṇādīnāṁ pradānaṁ dānam ucyate ||
vyājenaunder some pretext, on a made-up excuse instrumental of means — the pretext is the defining feature; a plain gift without it is not dāna in this technical senseकिसी बहाने से — व्याज (बहाना) ही इसका लक्षण है; बिना बहाने के साधारण उपहार इस पारिभाषिक अर्थ में 'दान' नहीं
bhūṣaṇādīnāṁof ornaments and the like — what gets given genitive — bhūṣaṇa 'ornament' + ādi 'and so on', leaving the list of gift-objects openआभूषण आदि वस्तुओं का — 'आदि' से देय वस्तुओं की सूची खुली रहती है
pradānaṁthe giving, the handing-overदेना, प्रदान करना
dānam ucyateis called dāna, 'gift-giving' ucyate — the naming verb that marks this as a lakṣaṇa, a definition'दान' कहलाता है — 'उच्यते' यह लक्षण-वाक्य को नामित करने वाली क्रिया है
vyājena — under a pretext; bhūṣaṇādīnāṁ — of ornaments and the like; pradānaṁ — the giving; dānam ucyate — is called dāna.
When one gives ornaments and such under some pretext, that is called dāna, 'gift-giving.' This line is the lakṣaṇa, the definition; the verse to come will illustrate it. The pretext (vyāja) is the whole point — the gift must arrive wrapped in a playful excuse, not handed over plainly.

Kṛṣṇa begins his playful speech to Padmā: 'I have a friend named Kāma — Cupid himself. He has heard that you are my beloved...'
An udāharaṇa of dāna, 'gift-giving under a pretext,' defined just above in L1. Kāma is Cupid, the god of love; Kṛṣṇa invents him as the 'real' donor of the necklace so that his own gift arrives wrapped in a pretext (vyāja) — which is exactly what the definition requires.

'...and so this necklace is his gift, offered to you by him. Let it rest on your breast and win there a festival of contact.' The joke underneath: it is really Kṛṣṇa's own necklace, and Kṛṣṇa's own longing to touch her breast, voiced through the necklace and fathered on Cupid.

padmā — Padmā; māna-vinigrahāt — because her sulk was subdued; praṇayinā tena — by him, the loving one; udbhaṭaṁ cumbitā — was intensely kissed.
And Padmā — her jealous sulk (māna) now broken by the charm of his gift and his words — was kissed hard by him, her loving Kṛṣṇa. So the pretext-gift did its work: it dissolved her māna and won the kiss. (māna is a lover's proud sulk; vinigraha, its subduing.)

Viśvanātha unpacks the 'thick smile' (udbhinna-sāndra-smitā) of the verse. Behind it, Padmā is teasing him right back: 'Oh yes, yes — Cupid, no less, gave ME a sapphire necklace and gave YOU a golden one!' She plays along with his invented Cupid, only to turn the joke around and catch his lie. That mock-agreement, Viśvanātha says, is the abhiprāya, the meaning her smile is carrying.
