bhogāṅka-gotra-skhalana-svapnair anumitis tridhā ||
bhogāṅka-gotra-skhalana-svapnaiḥby love-marks, by a slip of the name, and by dreams — these three being the tell-tale grounds instrumental (plural) of means; a dvandva of the three signs — bhoga-aṅka 'mark of enjoyment', gotra-skhalana 'stumbling on the name', svapna 'dream(-talk)'भोग के चिह्न, नाम के स्खलन और स्वप्न — इन तीन लक्षणों के द्वारा
anumitiḥthe inference [that the lover has been with another]अनुमिति (नायिका का यह अनुमान)
tridhāis of three kindsतीन प्रकार की होती है
bhogāṅka-gotra-skhalana-svapnaiḥ — by love-marks, a slip of the name, and dreams; anumitiḥ — the inference [of the lover's dalliance]; tridhā — is threefold.
A woman can detect that her lover has been with another in three ways. By the bhogāṅka — love-marks left on a body. By gotra-skhalana — his tongue slipping and naming the wrong woman. And by svapna — what he lets slip in dreams. So the inference comes in three kinds.
The lakṣaṇa (defining verse) of anumiti — the inference by which a heroine detects her lover's dalliance with a rival. The lead-in anumitiḥ— announces the term. Three grounds are named here; this unit goes on to illustrate the first, the bhogāṅka.

bhogāṅkaḥ — the love-mark; gātre dṛśyate — is seen on the body; vipakṣasya priyasya ca — of the rival woman and of the beloved too.
The love-mark shows up on the body. Sometimes on the rival woman's limbs, sometimes on the lover's own — and either way it gives him away.

The udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of the bhogāṅka named in 15.88 — the love-mark that betrays the lover. Viśvanātha sets the scene: Kṛṣṇa has come to the bower of the wronged Candrāvalī (the khaṇḍitā — the heroine whose lover arrives marked by another woman); her companion Padmā meets him and, with taunt and indignation, speaks these lines. So the 'you' throughout is Kṛṣṇa; the speaker is Padmā.

The instrumental runs on into the next line — this transferred picture is the means by which the cover-story is exposed.

Jīva reads it his own way. The accusing woman had herself painted that design on Kṛṣṇa's chest earlier, on purpose — as a test. If he went off to the rival, the mark would rub away or transfer and give him up. So on Jīva's reading the 'reflected picture' is the trap she had set to catch him.
Jīva's distinctive take: the tell-tale picture was planted, not merely picked up by chance. The speaker had drawn it on Kṛṣṇa's chest beforehand precisely to check on him. This does not square with Viśvanātha, who reads the design as an imprint from Lalitā's forehead — the two glosses are left standing side by side.

Kṛṣṇa gives in: 'All right, I'll go. But when Candrāvalī wakes, you her friends — being soft-hearted — must yourselves tell her that I am blameless, and report all my coaxing and bowing and pleading.' He is angling to have the sakhīs plead his case for him.

Now Padmā delivers the retort, and Viśvanātha decodes the picture. 'kiñcit' — slightly; 'bimbita' — reflected, imprinted as in a mirror. Reflected what? The leaf-scrollwork (patra-bhaṅga) from Kṛṣṇa's own forehead, painted in ochre and realgar. Reflected onto what? Onto a slate that also carries a makara-figure drawn in musk. That slate is 'the painted panel' the verse means — Lalitā's forehead. When the two foreheads met, his ochre leaf-design printed off onto her musk-painted brow, and the swap is now plain to see.
The conceit turns on a mirror-transfer of forehead-paintings. Viśvanātha reads the reflected leaf-design as Kṛṣṇa's own, caught on the 'slate' of Lalitā's forehead when the two pressed together — her brow becoming the tell-tale painted panel. Note this differs from Jīva, who has the accuser plant a design on Kṛṣṇa's chest; the two readings are left unreconciled.
