L1definition
nidrā-kṣayas tu jāgaryā stambha-śoṣa-gadādi-kṛt ||
nidrā-kṣayaḥthe loss of sleep — the state now being defined nom. — the subject the definition is pinned toनिद्रा का नाश (जिस पर यह परिभाषा टिकी है)
tubut — marking this off from nidrā (sleep) itself, just definedपरन्तु (निद्रा से भिन्न)
jāgaryāis what is called jāgaryā, wakefulnessजागरण (अनिद्रा) है
stambha-śoṣa-gadādi-kṛtand it brings on paralysis, wasting, sickness, and the like bahuvrīhi ending in -kṛt “producing”: stambha (stiffening) + śoṣa (wasting) + gada (sickness) + ādi (and so on)जो स्तम्भ (शरीर का जड़ हो जाना), शोष (सूखना, कृशता), गद (रोग) आदि उत्पन्न करता है
nidrā-kṣayaḥ tu — but the loss of sleep; jāgaryā — is jāgaryā, wakefulness; stambha-śoṣa-gadādi-kṛt — the producer of paralysis, wasting, sickness, and the rest.
The loss of sleep — as opposed to sleep itself — is called jāgaryā, wakefulness. It brings on stiffening of the limbs, wasting away, sickness, and troubles of that kind.
jāgaryā, sleeplessness, is counted here among the conditions of vipralambha (love-in-separation): the lover, unable to sleep, is worn down by stambha (the body seizing up), śoṣa (drying out, emaciation), gada (illness), and the like. The “tu” sets it against nidrā, sleep, defined just before.

An udāharaṇa of jāgaryā, “wakefulness / loss of sleep,” defined in L1 (28), quoted from the Vidagdha-mādhava (2.2). By Viśvanātha’s framing (s1) the speaker is Śrī Rādhā and the friend addressed is Viśākhā.

For no one else can fetch that thief-in-the-dream — no one but her.
svāpnika-taskara, “the dream-thief,” is Kṛṣṇa: he came only inside the dream and stole her heart, so only sleep — which alone can produce the dream — can bring him back. This is why the loss of sleep (jāgaryā) is unbearable to her.

Where the received text reads “no other person can fetch the dream-thief,” Jīva records the variant “no other is able to turn that dream-thief back” — valayitum, “to bring him around,” in place of upaharaṇe, and aparaḥ, “another,” in place of anyaḥ janaḥ. The sense stays the same; only the wording differs.

Viśākhā is in despair, thinking: “Alas, alas! Hemmed in here by the elders in the inner rooms, how can I bring Śrī Kṛṣṇa in? Or how can I take you — kept so close you never even see the sun — out to him?” To that despairing Viśākhā, so Viśvanātha sets the scene, Śrī Rādhā speaks the verse “śyāmam…”
asūryaṁ-paśyā — literally “one who does not [even] see the sun” — is a stock idiom for a woman kept in such strict seclusion that she never goes outdoors; here it measures how nearly impossible it seems to bring Rādhā to Kṛṣṇa.
