The verse — decoded
L1conclusion
mādanasya gatiḥ suṣṭhu madanasyeva durgamā |
mādanasyaof mādana — the highest reach of mahābhāva genitive: whose gati is spoken ofमादन (भाव) की
gatiḥits course, the way it worksगति (मार्ग, स्वरूप)
suṣṭhuthoroughly, through and throughनितान्त, भली-भाँति
madanasya ivajust like madana's own — madana here read either as Cupid or as Kṛṣṇa-worshipped-as-Cupid iva = 'like'; the near-homonym mādana / madana carries the śleṣaमदन (कामदेव / मदनरूप कृष्ण) की भाँति
durgamāis hard to reach, hard to fathomदुर्गम है, थाह पाना कठिन है
mādanasya — of mādana; gatiḥ — its course; madanasya iva — like madana's own; suṣṭhu durgamā — is thoroughly hard to fathom.
The way mādana works is truly hard to fathom — as hard as madana's own. That second 'madana' is a pun the commentators split on: Cupid, or Kṛṣṇa worshipped as Cupid.
The verse caps the mādana section by declaring its topmost bhāva beyond full analysis. mādana (the bhāva) and madana (Cupid / Kṛṣṇa-as-madana) are a deliberate śleṣa — Viśvanātha and Jīva pull it in different directions below.
L2conclusion
na nirvaktuṁ bhavec chakyā tenāsau munināpy alam ||
na ... śakyā bhavetit could not be done optative + potential passive; asau (fem.) is the subject — the gatiनहीं की जा सकती (सम्भव नहीं होती)

tena muninā apieven by that sage — api underlines 'even by him' api = 'even'; who the muni is, the commentators dispute belowउस मुनि के द्वारा भी

alamto the full, adequately with nirvaktum — 'explain to the point of completeness'पूर्णता तक, यथेष्ट रूप से
asau — this course of mādana; tena muninā api — even by that sage; alam — to the full; nirvaktum — to explain; na śakyā bhavet — could not be done.
na ...
It could not be fully spelled out even by that great sage — not to the end, not adequately.
'That sage' (muni) is left open in the mūla. Jīva takes it as Śrī Śuka(deva); Viśvanātha allows Bharata or Śuka — a suspended reading, not resolved here.

mādanasya — of mādana; madanatayā kvacit upāsyasya śrī-kṛṣṇasya iva — like [the course] of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, in some places worshipped as madana; tena muninā api iti — 'even by that sage' means; śrī-śukena iti — by Śrī Śuka; na gamyate — it is not fully grasped.
Jīva reads the pun toward Kṛṣṇa: mādana's course is like that of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who in some traditions is worshipped as madana, Cupid himself. And 'that sage' who cannot fathom it — Jīva names him Śrī Śuka.
'worshipped as madana' points to the tantric upāsanā of Kṛṣṇa through the kāma-bīja; Jīva only gestures at it. So Jīva identifies the muni of the mūla as Śukadeva.

Viśvanātha opens with a bow. I bow to Śrī Caitanya, whose very form is Caitanya, forever the abiding ground of sweetness. Though He holds all power of His own — ah! — He still keeps perfectly to what is fitting.
mādhurya-sthāyī quietly echoes sthāyi-bhāva, the subject of this whole prakaraṇa: Caitanya is the abiding 'ground' of the sweet mood the chapter maps.

An objection. Even so — take the mādana example at 14.224. In it she calls out to Mālatī, and looks at Mālatī and the others, right in the moment of union, which cuts against what union should feel like. That seems impossible to explain.
The oddity is the point of mādana: contradictory moods surface at once, so even in union she turns toward others. The objection presses on exactly that strangeness.

And press it further. If 'all bhāvas' in the mādana definition (14.219) is taken to sweep in union, separation, their sub-types and varieties, then something has to make all of them rise together at one instant. That cause must be some special property found in mādana and nowhere else.
dharma-viśeṣa = a distinguishing property. The objector builds toward: surely, then, that property should be pinned down and defined.

One might think: then analyze that property, make it plain, state it, and give mādana a fuller definition. Anticipating exactly this, Rūpa speaks the verse 'mādanasya…' — whose answer is that it cannot be so pinned down.
This is the avataraṇikā: it stages the demand for a fuller definition so that the mūla's reply ('it can't be fully explained') lands as an answer, not a dodge.

rāma-rāvaṇayoḥ yuddhaṁ rāma-rāvaṇayoḥ iva iti-vat — as in 'the Rāma-Rāvaṇa war is like the Rāma-Rāvaṇa war'; dustaratve api — though insurmountable; nirupamam eva — it is without any parallel; iti arthaḥ — this is the meaning.

Here Viśvanātha unpacks 'like madana's'. It works like the old proverb, 'the war of Rāma and Rāvaṇa was like the war of Rāma and Rāvaṇa' — you reach for a comparison and find only the thing itself. So too mādana's course: however impossible to fathom, it has no parallel but itself.
Analogy: the proverb is the pattern; mādana's gati is what it illustrates; the point proven is incomparability — 'like madana's' names no outside standard, only the thing itself. It stops there: it does not measure mādana against Cupid, only marks that nothing else measures it.

Or take the variant reading 'like madana's'. Then madana is Śrī Kṛṣṇa himself, worshipped as madana through the kāma-bīja, the seed-mantra. This second reading Viśvanātha sets beside the first and lets both stand — it agrees with how Jīva took the word.
