eṣa vicitraḥ ko'pi mādanaḥ — this wondrous, indescribable mādana; yoga eva bhavet — arises in union alone.
This mādana — wondrous, many-hued, beyond describing — arises in union (yoga) alone, never in separation.
mādana is the topmost pitch of anurāga in the mahābhāva scale, and this verse takes it up as a sthāyi-bhāva. The whole knot the commentators untie: how can the highest state of union also carry the desperate longing that looks like separation?

Jīva begins: the eternal līlā is a settled thing — it is what one meditates on, in the standard meditation-topics that open with the blessed darśana of the Lord.

One might worry: if mādana is Rādhā's alone, how can its eternal līlās involve a whole crowd of companions? Jīva answers: mādana is indeed settled as hers exclusively — yet that very bhāva spreads out into her companions too. So the many-companion eternal līlās fit perfectly well.

An objection: the two verses that illustrate mādana — 'pūrṇāḥ pulindyaḥ' (14.223) and 'duṣkaraṁ katarad-ālī' (14.224) — show only aching longing; where is the union you say mādana needs? To meet this, Rūpa adds the second line, 'yad-vilāsāḥ…'.

Here is the deeper teaching. On the settled doctrine of the Bhāgavatāmṛta, union and separation run at the same time — through a difference of prakāśa. She manifests herself in more than one form at once, and lives union in one and separation in another, simultaneously.

prakāśa: in Gauḍīya theology, one and the same person can stand forth in several full manifestations (prakāśa) at once. The doctrine is credited to the Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta (Sanātana Gosvāmī); Viśvanātha leans on it to make room for union and separation happening together.

Both belong to one and the same prakāśa. Union and separation, fused in a single manifestation: that is mādana.

nanv evaṁ cet — but if it is so; sambhoga-kāle'pi katham atitṛṣṇā-mayī tādṛśy uktiḥ sambhavati iti — how, even during union, is such a craving-soaked speech possible?
A further objection: if union is really present, then how — even at the time of union — could she pour out that speech drenched in desperate longing, as the example verses show? Longing like that seems to belong only to separation.

tatrāha vicitra iti — to that he answers with 'vicitraḥ'.
Viśvanātha replies by pointing to the mūla's own word 'vicitraḥ' — 'wondrous.' The answer is folded into that word.

sahasradhā sambhoga-kāle sahasradhaivotkaṇṭhā — 'a thousandfold' = even in union, longing rises a thousandfold; ity adbhutam eva ity arthaḥ — and that is exactly the wonder.
The answer: even in the very midst of union, longing wells up a thousandfold. That is the marvel — the 'wondrous' the verse names. In mādana the ache does not stop when union comes; it multiplies inside it.

tena vipralambhasya visphūrtir iti lakṣita-lakṣaṇenānurāgeṇa saha asya sāṅkaryaṁ na mantavyam — hence one must not confuse this mādana with anurāga, which is defined by the mark 'separation flashes forth [even in union]'.
One might now object: anurāga too was defined by 'separation flashing forth even in union' — so is mādana just anurāga renamed? Viśvanātha heads it off: do not run the two together. They share a look but are not the same, as the next lines spell out.

The difference is one of order. In anurāga, separation is felt first: she is genuinely apart from him to begin with.

And once that vision arrives — at the moment of the inner embrace of Kṛṣṇa — the desperate longing-speech simply stops. In mādana it does the opposite: the longing rages a thousandfold right inside the real embrace. So the gap between anurāga and mādana is wide. They are not to be confused.
