duṣkaraṁ katara-dāli mālatī
katara-dāliwhich one [of them], O friend? sandhi: katarat (interrogative 'which') + āli (O friend, vocative — Rādhā to Lalitā)कौन-सा (katarat), हे सखी (āli — राधा ललिता को सम्बोधित करती हैं)
mālatīthe mālatī creeper nominative, the subject Rādhā wonders aboutमालती लता — जिसके विषय में राधा विस्मय करती हैं (कर्ता)
āli — O friend; mālatī — [this] mālatī; katarat duṣkaraṁ [tapaḥ] — which hard austerity…
Rādhā turns to her friend: 'What hard austerity — and which kind of austerity, dear Lalitā — did this mālatī creeper…'
An udāharaṇa, an illustrative verse in Rādhā's voice (so Viśvanātha, s2: Rādhā to Lalitā), given under the lead-in 'yathā vā', 'or else, take this.' Per Jīva (s1) it is offered in place of the earlier example 'pūrṇāḥ pulindyaḥ', which did not fit here. It illustrates — so Jīva and Viśvanātha — that the term gandha-mātra, 'mere scent,' carries its purport only as far as a sādṛśyābhāsa, a semblance of a resemblance to Kṛṣṇa (Viśvanātha: to union with him): the creeper embraces not Kṛṣṇa, but a tamāla tree that merely looks like him.

yathā vā iti'yathā vā' — 'or else, take this' pratīka of the new example's lead-in'यथा वा' यह (नये उदाहरण की भूमिका का प्रतीक)
pūrṇāḥ pulindyaḥ iti udāharaṇaṁ — the example 'pūrṇāḥ pulindyaḥ'; na atra upapannam — does not fit here; iti avadhārya — having so determined; prāha yathā vā iti — he says 'yathā vā'.
Jīva sets the verse up. Rūpa first weighs the earlier illustration, 'pūrṇāḥ pulindyaḥ.' He finds it does not fit at this point. So he sets it aside and offers another, opening with 'yathā vā' — 'or else, take this one.'
'पूर्णाः पुलिन्द्यः' यह उदाहरण यहाँ संगत नहीं बैठता — ऐसा निश्चय करके (ग्रन्थकार ने) 'यथा वा' कहकर (यह नया उदाहरण) कहा।

duṣkaram ity udāharaṇaṁ gandha-mātra-śabdasya tat-sādṛśyābhāsa-paryanta-tātparyatvād upapadyate ||
duṣkaram iti udāharaṇaṁthis example, the verse 'duṣkaram''दुष्करम्' यह उदाहरण
gandha-mātra-śabdasyasince the word 'gandha-mātra', 'mere scent' genitive, the term whose reach is at issue'गन्धमात्र' शब्द का — जिसकी व्याप्ति विचारणीय है
tat-sādṛśya-ābhāsa-paryanta-tātparyatvātbecause its intended sense reaches only as far as a semblance of a resemblance to that [Kṛṣṇa] ablative of cause 'because'; paryanta = 'up to, as far as'; sādṛśya-ābhāsa = a mere semblance of a likenessक्योंकि उसका तात्पर्य उस (कृष्ण) के सादृश्य-आभास पर्यन्त ही है (सादृश्य-आभास = सादृश्य का मात्र आभास)
upapadyatedoes fit, holds goodसंगत होता है
duṣkaram iti udāharaṇaṁ — the example 'duṣkaram'; gandha-mātra-śabdasya tat-sādṛśya-ābhāsa-paryanta-tātparyatvāt — because the word 'mere scent' has its purport reaching only up to a semblance of a resemblance to that [Kṛṣṇa]; upapadyate — is fitting.
Jīva says why this new example fits. The phrase 'mere scent' (gandha-mātra) is meant to reach only so far — up to a faint semblance of a resemblance to Kṛṣṇa. Here the mālatī embraces a tamāla that merely looks like him — not Kṛṣṇa, not even a true likeness, just a trace. That is exactly what 'mere scent' points at, so this example holds.
sādṛśya-ābhāsa: one degree fainter than sādṛśya (a real resemblance) — a 'semblance of a resemblance,' only the appearance of a likeness. The tamāla is not Kṛṣṇa and not even truly like him; it just carries his 'scent.'
