An udāharaṇa of sadā-bhoge’pi tad-gandha-mātrādhāra-stutiḥ — 'even amid constant union, praising a mere trace-holder of his scent' — quoted from the Śrī-daśama (Bhāgavata) 10.21.17. The full opening line, carried in the lead-in, runs pūrṇāḥ pulindya urugāya-padābja-rāga-śrī-kuṅkumena.

He unpacks 'constant enjoyment.' Such is the nature of mādana-bhāva that even in the bare act of gazing at Kṛṣṇa's body, thousands of full unions — embracing, kissing, and the rest — are already being had. That is what 'constant enjoyment' means here.
मादन-भाव के स्वभाव के ही कारण, श्रीकृष्ण के अंगों के दर्शन के समय भी उनके आलिंगन, चुम्बन आदि से भरे हुए हजारों संभोग होते रहते हैं। 'सदा भोग' का अर्थ है — उस दर्शन-काल में भी (भोग)।

Here Viśvanātha supplies the setting. Thinking of some Pulinda women she had once seen, Śrī Rādhā speaks: 'Those tribal Śabara women are the truly fulfilled ones; we are the unfulfilled. So we long to know what austerity they performed, that we might perform it ourselves.' Under this humble longing, the poet says, anurāga is being suggested.

One asks: fulfilled by what? He answers with the verse's word. The 'lustrous kuṅkuma' (śrī-kuṅkuma) means the kuṅkuma that carries the red dye of Urugāya-Kṛṣṇa's lotus-feet — that redness is its śrī, its glow.

'उस कुंकुम से पुलिन्दियों को क्या (मिला)?' — इस पर 'तृण-रूषित' (तिनकों पर लगा हुआ) यह कहती हैं। प्रियतमा के संभोग के पश्चात् श्रीकृष्ण जब वन में विहार करने निकले, तब उनके (रँगे हुए) चरणों से वह कुंकुम तिनकों पर लग गया — ऐसा भाव है।

śrī-kṛṣṇa-darśane kim abhaviṣyat na jāne — I do not know what would have happened had they seen Kṛṣṇa himself; iti bhāvaḥ — this is the import.
na jāne — नहीं जानती; śrī-kṛṣṇa-darśane — कृष्ण-दर्शन होने पर; kim abhaviṣyat? — क्या होता?; iti bhāvaḥ — ऐसा भाव।
Rādhā's unspoken wonder: 'If mere grass-kuṅkuma did this to them, I cannot imagine what would have become of them had they set eyes on Kṛṣṇa himself.'
'जब मात्र कुंकुम के दर्शन से यह दशा हुई, तो यदि साक्षात् श्रीकृष्ण का ही दर्शन हो जाता, तब न जाने क्या हो जाता — यह मैं नहीं जानती' — ऐसा भाव है।

tat kuṅkumam — उस कुंकुम को; ānaneṣu kuceṣu limpantyaḥ satyaḥ — मुखों और स्तनों पर लगाती हुई; tad-ādhiṁ kandarpa-pīḍāṁ — उस आधि अर्थात् कन्दर्प-पीड़ा को; jahuḥ — त्याग दिया।
Then, smearing that very kuṅkuma on their faces and breasts, they threw off their ādhi — the inner torment of lust that the sight had roused.
उस कुंकुम को अपने मुखों और स्तनों पर लगाती हुई उन्होंने अपनी आधि — अर्थात् कन्दर्प की उस पीड़ा को — त्याग दिया।

And how did smearing it drive off the pain? Because through his kuṅkuma they tasted the joy of Kṛṣṇa's embrace, as though he were right there in person.
मानो साक्षात् श्रीकृष्ण के ही आलिंगन के सुख का अनुभव करके — इस प्रकार उन्होंने वह पीड़ा त्याग दी — ऐसा अर्थ है।

aho — अहो!; kuṅkumasyaiva ko’py ayaṁ śakti-viśeṣaḥ — यह कुंकुम का ही कोई शक्ति-विशेष; tāsāṁ premṇa eva — (नहीं) उनके प्रेम का ही; iti bhāvaḥ — ऐसा भाव।
Rādhā marvels: 'Ah, what an extraordinary power this kuṅkuma has!' — then corrects herself: no, the power belongs not to the kuṅkuma but to their prema alone.
अहो! यह तो कुंकुम का ही कोई अनिर्वचनीय शक्ति-विशेष है — (और फिर सुधार कर) नहीं, यह तो उन्हीं के प्रेम का शक्ति-विशेष है — ऐसा भाव है।

A closing observation: smearing kuṅkuma right on the face serves two ends — it gets them fragrance and good looks, and it also gives away their rustic, tribal simplicity (a polished woman would not daub her face so).
मुखों पर कुंकुम लगाना एक ओर तो सौरभ्य और सौन्दर्य की प्राप्ति के लिए है, और दूसरी ओर उनके अपने ग्राम्यत्व (असंस्कृत, गँवारू आचरण) का भी सूचक है।
