L1definition
dustyaja-dvandva-bhāve’smin prāptir nārhety anuddhatam |
dustyaja-dvandva-bhāvein him whose coupled state [with Śrī] is hard to break loc.; bahuvrīhi qualifying asmin — dus-tyaja 'hard to give up' + dvandva 'the pair/couple'जिसमें युगल का वह भाव है जिसे छोड़ना कठिन है — ऐसे (नायक) में
asminin this one, i.e. in Kṛṣṇa loc., picks up the person just describedइस (अभी वर्णित नायक) में
prāptiḥgaining [him], reaching union with him(उसकी) प्राप्ति
na arhatiis not fitting, is not deservedउचित नहीं, हो नहीं सकती
iti— [the words spoken are] to this effectऐसा
anuddhatamspoken without arrogance, humbly adverbial acc. governing uktaṁ in L2बिना गर्व के, विनम्र भाव से (जिस प्रकार L2 में 'कहा गया' हो)
yatra (L2) anuddhatam — humbly; asmin dustyaja-dvandva-bhāve — of this one whose union is hard to break; prāptiḥ — attainment; na arhati — is not fitting; iti — thus [it is said]
This defines pratijalpa. In it she says, without any arrogance: he is one whose union [with Śrī] can never be broken, so it is simply not fitting to reach him. She rules out union — but gently, not haughtily.
dvandva = a couple; the 'pair hard to give up' is Kṛṣṇa joined inseparably to Śrī, unpacked by the commentators below.
L2definition
dūta-sammānanenoktaṁ yatra sa pratijalpakaḥ ||
dūta-sammānanenaby honoring the messenger instr. of manner — the honoring accompanies the refusalदूत के सम्मान के साथ (सम्मान अस्वीकार के साथ-साथ चलता है)

yatra — where; dūta-sammānanena — by honoring the messenger; anuddhatam (L1) uktaṁ — it is humbly said [that attainment is not fitting]; saḥ pratijalpakaḥ — that is pratijalpa
And the refusal is wrapped in honor for the messenger — she does not scold the bee, she respects it. A speech that refuses union humbly while honoring the messenger: that is called pratijalpa.
pratijalpa is one of the ten jalpa forms Rādhā speaks to the bee in the Bhramara-gīta; the example verse that follows is its illustration.

priya-sakha — O dear friend; punar āgāḥ — you have come again; kiṁ preyasā preṣitaḥ — is it that you were sent by the beloved?
Now the example verse — Rādhā speaking to the returning bee. 'O dear friend, you have come back again. Were you sent by my beloved?' She greets the messenger warmly, not with anger.
An udāharaṇa of pratijalpa (the humble, messenger-honoring refusal defined in 14.215); the verse is Bhāgavata 10.47.19, from the Bhramara-gīta, spoken by a gopī to Uddhava's stand-in, the bee.

'Ask for what you want — what is it you long for? You deserve my honor, dear one.' She keeps honoring the messenger, offering him a boon.
mānanīya = 'to be honored' — the dūta-sammānana that the definition (L2) requires is right here in the verse.

Here the refusal turns: 'But how can you lead us to the side of a man whose union [with Śrī] can never be broken?' She refuses to be taken to him — because he is never free of his consort.
The turn from welcome (L3-4) to refusal (L5-6): the honored messenger is now told his errand cannot succeed.

'For his bride Śrī sits on his chest always, right beside him, gentle one.' The proof of the unbreakable union: the goddess Lakṣmī is forever on Kṛṣṇa's chest, so there is no room for us.
śleṣa on śrīḥ: on the surface, the goddess Lakṣmī ever on Viṣṇu's chest; underneath, the golden Śrī-line on Kṛṣṇa's chest — which the commentators read as a woman at night. The verse's headline image works on both layers at once.

Jīva opens: so here we have a refusal, delivered in the mood of māna — the heroine's jealous sulk. The whole speech is a turning-away of the messenger colored by that pique.
māna = the proud, jealous withdrawal of a heroine from her lover; bhaṅgī = the rhetorical 'turn' the mood takes in her words.

The bee had flown off somewhere and now returns; to it she speaks — in the manner of a kalahāntaritā, the heroine kept apart from her lover by her own quarrel. Her opening word is 'priya-sakha.'
kalahāntaritā = one of the aṣṭa-nāyikā (eight heroine-types): the woman separated from her beloved by a lovers' quarrel, now regretting it.

He resolves the compound dustyaja-dvandva-pārśvam: 'dustyaja-dvandva' means the mated-couple bond that cannot be given up; 'his' — the one who has it; so 'to the side of the man whose coupledom cannot be broken.'

Here Jīva foregrounds the śleṣa. The Śrī one sees on his chest by day is only a line — the golden streak. But that very line, at night, becomes Ramā, the full goddess who enjoys him. So the 'line' and the 'bride' are one and the same, and she is never off his chest.
śleṣa/utprekṣā: śrī = both the mark-line on Kṛṣṇa's chest and the goddess Lakṣmī. Reading them as one person is the poetic fancy that clinches 'the union cannot be broken.'

Viśvanātha builds the whole scene. In her frenzy she either ignores the bee though it hovers right there, or loses sight of it when it vanishes a moment — and grieves: 'Alas! I stung this messenger with harsh words; he flew to Mathurā and told Kṛṣṇa everything, and now Kṛṣṇa has abandoned me.' That is the kalahāntaritā state. Then she hopes: 'may my lover — an ocean of love, crest-jewel of all virtues — send that same bee back.' Watching the road, she suddenly sees it and says with respect: 'O dear friend' — friend of my beloved — 'though I pierced you with arrow-words, out of your own goodness you took no account of my offense and came anyway.'
kalahāntaritā again: her grief is that her own harsh words drove the messenger to report her, bringing on the estrangement she now regrets.

dustyaja-dvandvaṁ = mithunī-bhāvaḥ; yasya tasya pārśvam — to the side of the one who has it
Same resolution of the compound as Jīva gives: dustyaja-dvandva means the mated-pair bond that can't be given up, and the whole word means 'to the side of the man who has such a bond.'

Now the bee's objection: 'But surely he lives there all by himself — I swear it!' The messenger insists Kṛṣṇa has no consort with him.

She answers by calling the bee 'saumya,' gentle one — but Viśvanātha catches the sting: she means 'you poor naive thing, you're too trusting to see he isn't really alone.' The sweet address is a gentle rebuke.

puruṣāyita = the technical rati posture in which the woman takes the dominant, 'man's' role (viparīta-rati); here it explains how Śrī stays on his chest even in union.

Here is his full explanation of the śleṣa. Śrī is a goddess and can take any form. When Kṛṣṇa is enjoying other women, she discreetly shrinks to just a golden line on his chest — present, but only as the streak.
This is the mechanism behind the verse's double sense of śrī: goddess and chest-line are one being who changes form.
