kāṭhinya iti — [the verse] 'harau kāṭhinya…'.
kāṭhinya iti — 'काठिन्य' इत्यादि प्रतीक।
Jīva flags which verse he is on by its first key word, kāṭhinya, the lakṣaṇa of avajalpa.

samāhāra-dvandvaḥ ||
samāhāra-dvandvaḥit is a collective dvandva — the three faults bundled into one names the compound-type of kāṭhinya-kāmitva-dhaurtya; a samāhāra-dvandva counts as one neuter whole, so the ablative is singular(काठिन्य-कामित्व-धौर्त्य) समाहार-द्वन्द्व समास है, अतः एक नपुंसक समष्टि गिना जाकर पञ्चमी एकवचन होती है
samāhāra-dvandvaḥ — [kāṭhinya-kāmitva-dhaurtya is] a collective copulative compound.
samāhāra-dvandvaḥ — समाहार-द्वन्द्व समास।
One grammatical point: hardness-lust-cunning are joined as a samāhāra-dvandva — treated as a single lump, not three separate words. That is why the verse can put them in one ablative, 'because of the whole set of them.'
काठिन्य, कामित्व और धौर्त्य — ये तीनों समाहार-द्वन्द्व हैं, इसीलिए एक ही पञ्चमी में हैं।
samāhāra-dvandva: a dvandva taken as one collective mass (neuter singular), unlike an itaretara-dvandva where the members stay countably plural. Here the three faults are weighed together as one disqualifying bundle.
समाहार-द्वन्द्व वह द्वन्द्व है जो एक समष्टि (नपुंसक एकवचन) रूप में लिया जाता है — इतरेतर-द्वन्द्व से भिन्न, जहाँ अवयव गिनने योग्य बहुवचन रहते हैं। यहाँ तीनों दोष एक ही अयोग्य-कारक गट्ठर के रूप में तौले गए हैं।

tat = tasmāt — therefore; asitasya = asita-mātreṇa — of the merely dark-hued one; sakhyaiḥ = sakhya-prakāraiḥ — by the kinds of friendship.
tat tasmāt — 'तत्' अर्थात् इसलिए; asitasya asita-mātreṇa — श्याम के, केवल श्याम होने मात्र से; sakhyaiḥ sakhya-prakāraiḥ — मित्रता के प्रकारों से।
Jīva glosses L6 word by word. 'tat' is 'therefore.' 'asita' points to nothing but his being dark-complexioned. 'sakhyaiḥ' means the various ways one might befriend him.
'तत्' का अर्थ है इसलिए; 'असित' का अर्थ केवल श्यामवर्ण होना; और 'सख्यैः' का अर्थ मित्रता के प्रकारों से।

Even one such friendship is too much, Jīva says — because one dark avatāra, Rāma, already did the hunter-deeds against Vālī. Notice Jīva's move: he reads 'asita' distributively, as more than one dark form, and pins the Rāma deeds on one of them.
उन प्रकारों में से एक ही पर्याप्त है, क्योंकि एक श्याम अवतार ने 'मृगयुः इव' आदि से वर्णित यह चरित्र किया।

mā prastauṣīḥ eva'Do not bring him up at all!' prohibitive mā + injunctive; eva = 'not one bit'मत ही छेड़ (निषेधार्थक 'मा'; 'एव' = बिल्कुल नहीं)
tarhi kathaṁ tasya asi-īśituḥ vārtāṁ prastauṣi — then why raise talk of that dark master?; mā prastauṣīḥ eva — do not raise it at all.
tarhi kathaṁ mama īśituḥ asi tasya vārtāṁ prastauṣi — तो मेरे स्वामी की बात क्यों छेड़ती है; mā prastauṣīḥ eva — मत ही छेड़।
Jīva stages the objection inside the speech. One gopī catches herself, or scolds another: 'If he is so worthless, why are you even talking about him? Stop mentioning him altogether.' This sets up the last quarter of the verse.
तो फिर मेरे स्वामी की तू क्यों चर्चा छेड़ती है? बिल्कुल मत छेड़।

पौर्णमासी व्रज-मण्डल की ज्येष्ठ गुरु-रूपा हैं; विश्वनाथ गोपियों से कृष्ण के पूर्व-जन्म के 'अपराधों' की इस सूची का स्रोत उन्हीं को बतलाते हैं।

Viśvanātha now offers a sharper reading of the same word. Split it a-lubdha-dharmā: he had not even the hunter's own code. A poacher at least kills for a reason — Rāma fell below even that standard. Note this is a second way of cutting the compound, keeping the earlier 'greedy-in-his-ways' reading alongside.
वहाँ भी 'अ-लुब्ध-धर्मा' — अर्थात् शिकारी के भी धर्म से रहित; वह उस लोभी बहेलिये की मर्यादा से भी नीचे गिर गया।
The one written word lubdha-dharmā is read two ways: (1) 'having the ways of a greedy [hunter],' and (2) with a privative, a-lubdha-dharmā, 'lacking even a greedy hunter's code.' The second is the more cutting charge.
एक ही लिखित शब्द 'लुब्ध-धर्मा' के दो पाठ हैं: (१) 'लोभी शिकारी के स्वभाव वाला', और (२) निषेधक 'अ' के साथ 'अ-लुब्ध-धर्मा' अर्थात् 'लोभी शिकारी की मर्यादा से भी रहित'। दूसरा पाठ अधिक तीखा आक्षेप है।

Here is why he was worse than a hunter. A hunter kills for meat or money — but no one eats monkey, and no one buys it, so a real hunter has no reason to shoot a monkey at all. Rāma killed Vālī with even less cause than a poacher. That is the force of 'a-lubdha-dharmā.'
शिकारी तो वानरों को नहीं मारता, क्योंकि उनका मांस अभक्ष्य होने से किसी के हाथ बिकता ही नहीं (इसलिए कोई प्रयोजन नहीं) — ऐसा भाव है।

The gopī turns to a second outrage. Śūrpaṇakhā only desired him; for that he had her disfigured, ears and nose sliced off. Viśvanātha spells out virūpām as 'ears and nose cut,' and reads the verse's kāmayāna as the ordinary 'desiring.'

One might object: perhaps he mutilated her not from lust but from detachment — after all he lived as an ascetic in bark and matted hair. Viśvanātha blocks it: the very next word, strī-jitaḥ, shows he was no renunciant. He was ruled by his woman, Sītā.

pāṭha-antare aveṣṭayat = chalena babandha — in the variant, 'he bound by trickery'; dhvāṅkṣa-vat = kāka-vat — like a crow; saḥ yathā baliṁ jagdhvā api lokaṁ veṣṭayati — as a crow, having eaten its bali, swarms folk; sva-jātīyān anyān āhūya tam āvṛṇoti kadarthayati ca — calling its own kind, surrounds and torments it.
On a variant reading of the text, aveṣṭayat means 'he trussed him up by a ruse.' Viśvanātha reads dhvāṅkṣavat as 'like a crow' and unfolds the simile: a crow eats the food (bali) put out for it and then, far from grateful, calls up its fellow crows, mobs the giver, and torments him. So Vāmana: he took Bali's worship-gift, then summoned his own and bound the man. The crow is the deceiver, the eaten bali is Bali's offering, the mobbing is the binding.
पाठान्तर में 'अवेष्टयत्' का अर्थ है छल से बाँध दिया। 'ध्वाङ्क्ष' अर्थात् कौआ। जैसे कौआ बलि (भोजन) खाकर भी लोगों को घेरता है, और अपनी जाति के दूसरे कौओं को बुलाकर उसे घेरता और सताता है।
A pāṭhāntara (variant reading) on aveṣṭayat / āveṣṭayat. The crow-simile is a dṛṣṭānta: crow = the incarnate Lord, the eaten bali = the worship Bali offered, the crow's mobbing = the binding and casting-down of Bali. It proves ingratitude; it is not pressed beyond that.
यह 'अवेष्टयत्/आवेष्टयत्' पर एक पाठान्तर (वैकल्पिक पाठ) है। कौआ-उपमा एक दृष्टान्त है: कौआ = अवतारी भगवान्, खाया हुआ बलि = बलि द्वारा अर्पित पूजा, कौए का घेरना = बलि का बाँधा और पछाड़ा जाना। यह केवल कृतघ्नता सिद्ध करता है, इससे आगे नहीं खींचा जाता।

The upshot, with a pun. Enough — even one kind of friendship with the dark-hued one is too much. And hear the play on words: the gaurīs, the 'fair' gopīs, are turned a-sita, 'un-white,' their pure hearts soiled, by consorting with the a-sita, the dark one. Because such friendship is bound to bring fear. So asita reads twice: Kṛṣṇa the black-hued, and the impurity he leaves on the fair.
इसलिए 'असित' अर्थात् श्यामवर्ण उसकी मित्रता के अनेक प्रकारों में से एक ही प्रकार से बस करो — क्योंकि गौरियाँ (गौरवर्णा शुद्ध गोपियाँ) 'अ-सित' अर्थात् मलिन, अल्प-शुद्ध-चित्त हो जाती हैं, और उनसे भय अवश्यम्भावी है। ऐसा भाव है।
Foreground the śleṣa: asita = 'the black-hued one' (Kṛṣṇa) and, split a-sita, 'not-white / unclean.' Set against gaurī 'the fair, pure gopī': befriending the asita makes the gaurī a-sita. This is the verse's headline wordplay at this pivot.
यहाँ श्लेष को उभारें: 'असित' अर्थात् 'श्यामवर्ण' (कृष्ण) और, 'अ-सित' रूप में तोड़ने पर 'अश्वेत / मलिन'। 'गौरी' अर्थात् 'गौरवर्णा, शुद्ध गोपी' के सामने रखने पर — असित से मित्रता गौरी को अ-सित (मलिन) बना देती है। यही इस मोड़ पर श्लोक का मुख्य शब्द-चमत्कार है।

asita-sakhyair iti āsakty-ayogyatā bhayam īrṣyā ca ||
asita-sakhyaiḥ iti āsakti-ayogyatā'friendship with the dark one' carries the 'unfitness for attachment' maps to āsakty-ayogyatā of L1'असित-सख्यैः' शब्द से आसक्ति की अयोग्यता (L1 की आसक्त्य-अयोग्यता से मिलान)
bhayam īrṣyā caand it carries the fear and the jealousy too ca; answers the definition's bhiyā and sa-īrṣyam of L2तथा भय और ईर्ष्या (भी) ('च'; L2 के 'भिया' और 'सेर्ष्यम्' का उत्तर)
asita-sakhyaiḥ iti āsakti-ayogyatā bhayam īrṣyā ca — 'friendship with the dark one' shows the unfitness for attachment, and the fear and jealousy.
asita-sakhyaiḥ iti āsakti-ayogyatā — 'असित-सख्यैः' से आसक्ति की अयोग्यता; bhayam īrṣyā ca — तथा भय और ईर्ष्या।
And 'enough of friendship with the dark one' is the unfitness for attachment — and it also carries the fear and the jealousy that the definition named. So every fault listed in the lakṣaṇa is matched to a phrase of the example. The map is complete.
'असित-सख्यैः' शब्द से आसक्ति की अयोग्यता, तथा भय और ईर्ष्या भी दिखाई गई।
Note that Viśvanātha reads the definition's āsaktya-yogyatā as āsakti-a-yogyatā, 'un-fitness for attachment' — the negative, confirming L1's sense against a possible mis-parse as 'fitness.'
ध्यान दें कि विश्वनाथ लक्षण के 'आसक्त्य-योग्यता' को 'आसक्ति-अ-योग्यता' अर्थात् 'आसक्ति के लिए अ-योग्यता' — नकारात्मक — पढ़ते हैं, और L1 के अर्थ की 'योग्यता' रूप में सम्भावित भूल-पाठ के विरुद्ध पुष्टि करते हैं।
