ayam modanaḥ — this modana; praviśleṣa-daśāyām — in the state of utter separation; mohanaḥ bhavet — becomes mohana.
This modana, once it reaches the condition of utter, drawn-out separation, becomes the variety called mohana.
modana and mohana are the two culminating grades of mahābhāva in the ujjvala (madhura) rasa; mohana is modana intensified by full separation.

An udāharaṇa of mohana, spoken by Uddhava to Kṛṣṇa in Mathurā, describing Rādhā's condition in separation. The verse's first pāda (udyad-vepathu-vādyamāna-daśanā kaṇṭha-sthalāntar-luṭhaj-) is carried in the lead-in, so 'jalpā' opens mid-compound.

And here is the marvel: the dense masses of her deep passion for You — rāga, which on its other reading means dense red — have turned her white, pale. Redness itself blanching her: a built-in contradiction, and that is exactly the wonder Uddhava points to with 'citram' and 'api.'

The verse's headline device is the śleṣa on rāga: 'passion' and 'red.' The commentators unfold both readings below; the pallor of grief driven by love that should redden is the point.

Compare 'By separation a great favor has been done to me' (Bhāgavata 10.47.27), spoken to the gopīs. There too separation is praised for its greatness — the very lens under which the tear-flood is described here.

Why cited: cited to show that separation itself is spoken of in terms of its greatness (māhātmya), the same viewpoint that licenses the verse's hyperbole about tears flooding Gokula.

'citraṁ tad-ghana-rāga-rāśibhiḥ' iti atra — in this phrase; śleṣa-pakṣe — on the color-reading of rāga; raktimā-rāśitvāt — since they are masses of red; śvetīkṛtatvam na upapannam — being whitened does not fit; iti — therefore; citra-śabdaḥ ca api-śabdaḥ ca dattaḥ — the words 'wonder' and 'even' are given.
Here is the śleṣa. 'rāga' reads two ways: dense red color, or dense love. Take the color reading first — masses of red should never produce white. That impossibility is the whole point, so the poet plants the words 'citram' (a wonder!) and 'api' (even): heaps of red, and yet she is turned white.
śleṣa: a double meaning carried by a single word. Here rāga = both 'red dye/color' and 'passionate love,' and the verse trades on both at once.

Here is Jīva's point. Scripture knows love for the Lord as something that gives joy and makes the devotee blossom — never as something that gives grief and drains the color. So for that very love to leave Rādhā pale runs against its own nature: that is the wonder the poet marks.

nanuone may object: nanu marks the objectionयदि कहो —
bāṣpa-jalānām uṣṇatvātsince tear-water is hot ablative of reasonआँसुओं का जल गरम होने के कारण
tat-sekena kathaṁ vrīhayaḥ bhavantihow could rice-crops grow from sprinkling with it?
satyamtrue — [the point is granted] concedes before answering(यह) सत्य है
nanu — objection; bāṣpa-jalānām uṣṇatvāt — because tears are hot; tat-sekena kathaṁ vrīhayaḥ bhavanti — how do rice-plants grow by watering with them?; satyam — true.
Someone objects: tears are hot; watering rice with hot tears would scorch it, not grow it. 'True,' he grants — and then answers.

Their heat is only momentary. The instant the tears fall to the earth in front of her they turn cold, so they no longer scorch the crop.

vastutaḥ tu — but really; iyam kavi-nibaddha-vaktṛ-prauḍhoktiḥ — this is a poet-framed speaker's bold hyperbole; tad-bhūma-tātparyavatī — aimed at that overwhelming abundance.

Really, though, this is prauḍhokti — a deliberate overstatement the poet puts into his speaker's mouth. Its aim is not literal fact but the overwhelming abundance of her tears and love.
prauḍhokti: a bold poetic overstatement, a hyperbole knowingly voiced by a character the poet has composed — not to be pressed as literal fact.

On the other side of the śleṣa, that same 'rāga' means love: dense, massed anurāga. So the one word carries both at once — red, and passion.

From words like 'vādyamāna' — teeth played like instruments — you are meant to read off the su-uddīpta, top-degree intensity of trembling and the rest of the sāttvika signs. This is how the example verse fills out the definition's 'sūddīptā eva sāttvikāḥ.'
