Jīva opens: both modana and mādana, by the very force of their names, fall under sambhoga — the mood of union, not of separation.

mādana iti atra — in the word mādana; mitāṁ hrasvaḥ iti yat na āptaṁ — the shortening 'mitāṁ hrasvaḥ' is not obtained; tat khalu — and that is so because; mitsu madī harṣa-glepanayoḥ — in the mit list the root madī means joy and pining; iti arthaḥ — this is the sense.
Take the word mādana. The rule 'mitāṁ hrasvaḥ' shortens the vowel of a mit-marked root in the causative — and in the root-list that mit root madī carries the senses of joy (harṣa) and pining (glepana). If mādana came from that root, its ā would shorten to a. But here it does not — the long ā stays.
mitāṁ hrasvaḥ is Pāṇini 6.4.92: the penultimate vowel of a mit-marked verbal base is shortened before the causative. The point is that mādana keeps its long ā, so it is not built from the mit root madī (joy/pining).

paryāptiḥ syātthe sense would already be complete [and mādana would be redundant](हर्ष अर्थ की) पूर्ति हो जाती है
niyamāt — because no word is idle; arthāntara-kalpanayā — by positing a different meaning; jñeyaṁ — mādana must be understood; [for] harṣa-vācitva-modana iti anena eva — by the word 'modana', which already denotes joy; paryāptiḥ syāt — the sense would already be complete.
By the maxim that no word is wasted, mādana has to be given a different meaning. 'Modana' already means joy; if mādana meant joy too, that one word 'modana' would have said it all, and the second name would be pointless.

So mādana here means the love that maddens and intoxicates — like some rare heavenly wine. That is its sense, set off against modana, which is joy.
