yatra sāttvikā uddīptā — the love in which the sāttvika-bhāvas blaze at full flare; sa rūḍha iti bhaṇyate — that one is called rūḍha.
The involuntary bodily signs of love — trembling, tears, standing-on-end hair, and the rest — can flare at different strengths. The love in which they blaze at their fiercest, uddīpta, is called rūḍha, the 'risen' grade.
The sāttvika-bhāvas are the eight bodily reactions to intense emotion (stambha — paralysis, sveda — sweat, romāñca — bristling hair, svara-bhaṅga — a breaking voice, vepathu — trembling, vaivarṇya — pallor, aśru — tears, pralaya — fainting). They come in rising grades of intensity; uddīpta ('blazing') is the pitch that marks this love as rūḍha, which Jīva identifies as the first stage of mahābhāva.
