An udāharaṇa of vipralambha-visphūrti — the beloved's vivid, direct-vision-like appearing (visphūrti) as it strikes in love-in-separation, per the lead-in 'atha vipralambhe visphūrtiḥ.' The verse is spoken by Lalitā (so Viśvanātha), sending word to Kṛṣṇa in Mathurā through a passing traveler.

Why cited: Adduced to prove that sphūrti reaches down even to the rati stage: though only a rati-holding devotee, Bilvamaṅgala experiences Kṛṣṇa so vividly lodged in his heart that no physical leaving can dislodge him.

ayaṁ bhāvaḥ — the sense is this; tvat-sphūrtau satyām — when your sphūrti occurs; anayā tvāṁ āliṅgana-cumbanādiṣu sākṣād-vartinaṁ matvā — she, taking you truly present for embraces, kisses, and so on; prathamam atihṛṣyate — first thrills; kṣaṇāntaraṁ sphūrti-bhaṅge sati — a moment later, when the vision breaks; duḥkha-samudre nimajjate — she drowns in an ocean of sorrow.
Here is the inner sense. When your vivid vision comes upon her, she takes you to be really there — embracing, kissing, all of it — and at first she is beside herself with joy. A moment later the vision snaps, and she drowns in an ocean of grief.

atidhvāntodarkāt vidyut-prakāśāt — than a lightning-flash that ends in deeper darkness; kevala-andhakāraḥ varam iva — mere darkness is better, as it were; [tathā] sphūrtimad-virahāt — [just so] than separation attended by sphūrti; varaṁ kevala-virahaḥ — plain separation is better; na atikleśadaḥ — for it gives less pain.
Think of a lightning-flash that leaves behind an even blacker night: steady darkness would have been kinder. Just so, separation lit up by these visions is worse than plain separation — plain separation at least does not torture her this way. In the picture: the flash is the sphūrti; the deeper darkness after it is the crash into grief; and the steady darkness is the milder separation that never lights up at all.
