dhatte drāg anupādhi janma vidhinā kenāpi nākampate
dhatte[it] takes on, bearsधारण कर लेता है
drākall at once, in a flashतुरन्त ही, शीघ्रता से
anupādhiwithout any prompting cause an-upādhi: upādhi = an external conditioning trigger (hearing of the beloved, seeing, etc.); an- negates it — nothing outside sets it offबिना किसी बाह्य निमित्त के — इसे जगाने के लिए बाहर से कुछ नहीं चाहिए
janmaa birth, an arising (what it takes on)जन्म को
vidhinā kenāpiby any means whatever instrumental of means + kena api 'any at all' — sweeping in every conceivable wayकिसी भी उपाय से — हर सम्भव ढंग से
na ākampateit does not waver or trembleतनिक भी नहीं डिगता
ayaṁ [premānubandhotsavaḥ] — this [festival of the love-bond]; drāk — at once; anupādhi janma dhatte — takes on a birth with no prompting cause; vidhinā kenāpi na ākampate — by no means whatever does it waver.
This love takes birth all at once, with no outside cause to set it off. And by nothing whatever is it made to waver.
First two of the four marks of rāga the verse lays out: it is svābhāvika (self-arising, needing no trigger) and ahārya (unshakeable).
L2definition
sūte’tyāhita-sañcayair api rasaṁ te cen mitho vartmane |
sūte[it] gives birth to, brings forthउत्पन्न कर देता है
atyāhita-sañcayaiḥ apieven by masses of dire calamities instrumental of means; api = 'even' — the surprise is that dangers, not comforts, become the sourceमहान विपत्तियों के समूहों से भी — विस्मय यही कि सुख नहीं, संकट ही स्रोत बन जाते हैं
rasaṁrasa (the relish, the mood), the tasteरस को

vartmanebecome a path [to union] dative of purpose — for/toward a path; the whole clause is conditional on this(मिलन के) मार्ग के लिए हों — और यही सारी बात की शर्त है
te [atyāhita-sañcayāḥ] mithaḥ vartmane cet — if those masses of calamities become a mutual path [to union]; [tadā] atyāhita-sañcayaiḥ api rasaṁ sūte — then even by them it brings forth rasa.
If those heaps of dire dangers turn into a path bringing the two together, then even out of them this love brings forth rasa — its relish.
The third mark: it draws relish even from calamity, on the one condition that the calamity becomes a means of union.

camatkṛti-kara-uddāma-pramoda-uttarāṁ ṛddhiṁ — a flourishing whose crowning part is unbridled, wonder-causing joy; sañcinute — it keeps gathering up.
And it keeps piling up a flourishing whose highest element is a boundless, wonder-striking joy.
The fourth mark: it ceaselessly grows, and its growth is crowned by ever-fresh astonished delight.

ayaṁ — this; rādhā-mādhavayoḥ — of Rādhā and Mādhava; nirupamaḥ — matchless; prema-anubandha-utsavaḥ — the festival of the love-bond [is the doer of all four acts above].
This is the matchless festival of the love-bond of Rādhā and Mādhava. It is the one subject that does all four things named above.
The fourth pāda names the subject held in suspense through the first three: 'this' bond-festival is what takes birth, never wavers, distils rasa from danger, and forever grows.

Here the unshakeability, and the other marks along with it, are stated plainly enough on the face of the verse. So he passes over them lightly and comments only where a word needs unpacking.

anupādhi iti — the word 'anupādhi'; śravaṇa-ādi vinā api lakṣyam — is to be recognized even without hearing and the rest; ity arthaḥ — such is its meaning.
'anupādhi' means: this love is to be recognized even where the ordinary starters — hearing the beloved's qualities and so on — are absent. It does not wait on those causes.

Even so uncaused a birth, this love takes on complete in a flash — not built up in stages the way safflower red deepens with each fresh dipping.
The safflower (kusumbha) dye is the classic foil for rāga, playing on the double sense of rāga — 'dye/colour' and 'passion.' Worldly attachment stains the heart by slow, repeated layering; this love arises full-grown at once.

yaś citte sajjati drutam ity atra — in the verse 'which clings to the heart swiftly'; citta-vyañjanāyāḥ eva drutatvam uktaṁ — the swiftness stated was that of love's showing in the heart; na tu rāga-utpattiḥ — not of rāga's arising; iti bhedaḥ — this is the difference.
Do not confuse this with 14.136, 'which clings to the heart swiftly.' There, 'swiftly' described how an already-present love flashes into view in the heart. Here, 'drāk' describes the very birth of rāga. That is the difference.
Why cited: UN 14.136 is set beside this verse to fix a contrast: its 'swiftly' (drutam) qualified love's manifesting in the heart, whereas this verse's 'at once' (drāk) qualifies rāga's actual birth.

Now the case it illustrates — Rādhā-Mādhava's love. Here what shows itself is, in the one phase, a poised standing-apart (taṭasthatā), and in the other, the state of the beloved who keeps her lover wholly in her hold (svādhīna-bhartṛkā). Where worldly love would waver, these phases only manifest — the love beneath them never shifts. That is Jīva's point.

taṭasthatā and svādhīna-bhartṛkatā are heroine-conditions from the nāyikā typology: taṭasthā = poised, seemingly detached; svādhīna-bhartṛkā = the heroine who has her lover entirely at her side and under her will.

The lexicon Amara-kośa gives 'atyāhita' two senses: a great terror, and a deed done with no regard for one's own life. Both feed the verse — the dangers that yet yield rasa.
Why cited: The Amara-kośa is cited to license the reading of atyāhita as both 'grave terror' and 'a life-reckless deed,' grounding the verse's 'masses of atyāhita.'

There is also a variant reading: instead of 'a mutual path,' 'te cen mitho lambhakāḥ' — 'if they become, between the two, procurers of union.' Jīva records it without deciding between the two.

'It gathers up a flourishing' states, for Viśvanātha, that the radiance of the two is always on the increase. (Where Jīva foregrounds mounting joy, Viśvanātha reads the flourishing as ever-growing kānti, their glow — the two readings are left standing side by side.)
