The verse — decoded
L1reply
sadādhāra-viśeṣeṣu kausumbho’pi sthiro bhavet |
sadādhāra-viśeṣeṣuonce [a dye] soaks into special fixing substrates loc. of place; śleṣa — sad-ādhāra 'firm/excellent base': the mordant-treated cloth on one reading, the Kṛṣṇa-loving heart on the otherउत्तम एवं दृढ़ आधार-विशेषों पर (वस्त्र-पक्ष में मार्दक-संस्कृत वस्त्र, चित्त-पक्ष में कृष्ण-प्रेमी हृदय)
kausumbhaḥ apieven the safflower-red — proverbially the dye that fades soonest api concedes the worst case: 'even this one'कुसुम्भी (कुसुम का) रंग भी — जो अन्यथा शीघ्र उड़ जाता है, वह भी
sadādhāra-viśeṣeṣu — in special fixing substrates; kausumbhaḥ api — even the fugitive safflower-red; sthiraḥ bhavet — would become fast.
Even kusumbha — the safflower dye everyone knows fades first — turns colorfast once it soaks into the right substrate.
The verse runs on a śleṣa (double reading) that the commentators unpack: the 'dye on cloth' layer and the 'love in the heart' layer. Read it both ways at once.
L2conclusion
iti kṛṣṇa-praṇayiṣu mlānir asya na yujyate ||
itiso, on this principle draws the conclusion from the maxim of L1इस प्रकार (उपर्युक्त न्याय से) यह निष्कर्ष निकलता है कि
kṛṣṇa-praṇayiṣuin the case of those who love Kṛṣṇa loc.; the supreme 'substrate' of L1कृष्ण के प्रेमियों में (जो सर्वश्रेष्ठ आधार हैं)
asya mlāniḥany fading of it — of this dye / this love asya carries the śleṣa: 'of it' = of the kusumbha-red and of the love alikeइसका मलिन (फीका) पड़ना — 'इसका' श्लेष से कुसुम्भी रंग का भी और प्रेम का भी
na yujyatecannot rightly be alleged, does not fitसंगत नहीं होता
iti — so, on this principle; asya — of it; mlāniḥ — the fading; kṛṣṇa-praṇayiṣu — in Kṛṣṇa's beloveds; na yujyate — is not fitting.
So in those who love Kṛṣṇa, no fading of that love can be alleged. They are the supreme substrate; there the color holds forever.

An objection first. Earlier the love was compared to safflower dye. But safflower is exactly the dye that fades. So doesn't the comparison itself imply that this love, too, wears away with time? To meet this, Rūpa speaks the verse 'sadādhāra…'.

By the single word sadādhāra, Rūpa is announcing a special property of the substrate. The base is no ordinary one — and that is the whole hinge of the reply.

Now the two layers. On the cloth-side: 'being a fixing-substrate' means the cloth has been steeped in some astringent decoction — a mordant that makes the dye bite and hold.

On the heart-side: the same word means the heart has been steeped through the company of a woman whose love is māñjiṣṭha-fast. Her company is the mordant. Keep it, and your own love is set fast too. So Jīva pairs the two: mordant-brew for the cloth, company of a fast-loving gopī for the heart.

An objection. In the earlier illustration, all that was shown was that the māñjiṣṭha-fast love found in Rādhikā and the others is more beautiful than this safflower-red love. Only relative beauty was at issue there — not a word about permanence.

But there is a deeper problem. Safflower-red has no fastness whatever. So comparing an undying love to it is improper in the first place. It is to answer exactly this that Rūpa speaks 'sadādhāra…'.
