My dear friend — from the very day she first heard of you, her heart has been tied to you, Kṛṣṇa, and to no one else.
The whole verse is an udāharaṇa (illustration) for rāga in its general form (rāga-sāmānya), a mark of rati defined earlier in this chapter. Both commentators map the verse phrase-by-phrase onto that definition's marks — 'quickly clings in the heart' (citte sajjati drutam), 'carries the sheen of a different passion' (anya-rāga-cchavi), 'shines as befitting' (śobhate ca yathocitam). The speaker is a friend of Śyāmalā addressing Kṛṣṇa about her.

praṇaya = the stage of love where awe and formality dissolve into utter confidence; a māna (loving pique) arising at that depth does not flare outward but turns inward, which is why it looks like its opposite.

Jīva closes: her state, praised though it is by her friends, behaves like a woman dyed madder-red. It puts on none of māna's usual show — no frowning brows. Out of bashfulness it only hides the love away, and so, like the deepest dye, it does not flaunt itself. That is what Rūpa means to convey.
mañjiṣṭha (madder) is the deepest and most colorfast of dyes — proverbial for a love so deep it neither fades nor puts on a show. Jīva uses it for concealment: the deepest love conceals rather than displays, which is why her māna cannot be read from outside. (Viśvanātha, below, turns the same simile to a different purpose — do not merge the two.)

Viśvanātha: 'even at seeing a snake' conveys the mark 'sheen of another passion.' By reaching past mere seeing toward even touching, and taking Śrī Rādhikā's madder-red love — the very yardstick of deep attachment — he shows how impossible such love is to read; for Śyāmalā's is here pitched even higher than that.
mañjiṣṭha (madder) is the deepest, most colorfast dye, the standard image for the profoundest love. Where Jīva used it above for concealment, Viśvanātha uses it as a measuring-benchmark: Rādhā's love is the gold standard of undetectable depth, and Śyāmalā's is set beyond even it. Keep the two readings distinct.

Viśvanātha reads 'some state' as this: the weight of longing for you has swallowed her mind whole, so she has lost all grip on the outer world. And he says 'strong rāga, or else virāga' because when either love or its opposite grows strong, a person lets go of the ground of 'I' and 'mine' just the same — which is exactly why the two cannot be told apart.

Viśvanātha closes: the friend's unspoken message is a plea — if you do not go to her today, she will not live.
