An udāharaṇa (yathā vā, from Bhāgavata 10.30.38) quoted to illustrate māna: the coy, crooked speech of a gopī whose pride (dṛptā) Viśvanātha reads as māna, and whose prema Jīva says is born already crooked.

mānātout of māna (jealous sulking) ablative of source — praṇaya's originमान से, मान के कारण (यही प्रणय का उद्गम है)
praṇayasya janmathe birth of praṇaya (trusting intimacy)प्रणय का जन्म
uktamwas statedकहा गया
pūrvaṁ mānāt praṇayasya janma uktam.
Earlier the text said that praṇaya — love ripened into confident intimacy — is born out of māna. Jīva sets this up to contrast with what the present verse does.

But now, having noticed a fine distinction, Rūpa states the matter even in reverse. Ordinarily crookedness (kauṭilya) shows up only after praṇaya has already arisen. Even so, the love of a special heroine is precisely of this kind —

aheḥ iva premṇaḥ gatiḥ svabhāva-kuṭilā bhavet; ataḥ hetoḥ ahetoḥ ca yūnoḥ mānaḥ udañcati.
The course of prema is crooked by nature, like a snake's winding path. That is why, with cause or without any cause, māna keeps rising up between the young lovers.
Why cited: Quoted (u.nī. 15.102) to prove that prema's course is innately crooked, so that māna arises with or without provocation — grounding Jīva's point that a special heroine's prema is born already crooked.

kintubut [in the end] kintu turns from the reverse-order reading back to the settled viewपरन्तु (यहाँ उलटे क्रम के पाठ से लौटकर निश्चित मत की ओर मोड़)
"māno dadhāno viśrambham"the phrase 'māna that bears viśrambha (confident trust)' quoted from u.nī. 14.108 — māna producing the trust that defines praṇaya"मान विश्रम्भ (विश्वास) को धारण करता है" (उ.
iti yat prathamam uktaṁwhich was stated first / earlierऐसा जो पहले कहा गया
tat eva mataṁ nijamthat alone is his own accepted view eva — that first ordering, not the reverse one, is finalवही (पहला क्रम) अपना अभीष्ट मत है ('एव' — वही, उलटा नहीं)
iti lakṣyateso it is discerned to beऐसा प्रतीत होता है
kintu "māno dadhāno viśrambham" iti yat prathamam uktaṁ tat eva mataṁ nijam iti lakṣyate.
But in the end, what was said first — 'māna that carries viśrambha,' the confident trust in which praṇaya consists — that alone, it turns out, is Rūpa's own settled view. The reverse order was admitted, yet the standing teaching is that māna gives rise to trust-filled praṇaya, not the other way around.
