madhu-snehaḥmadhu-sneha, 'honey-love' — the type now being defined nominative; the subject of the whole verseमधु के समान स्नेह

madhu-snehaḥ tu — but now honey-love; kauṭilyaṁ — is crookedness; svātantrya-hṛdayaṅgamam — a crookedness that wins the heart through independence.
Now the second kind of melting-love. It is madhu-sneha, 'honey-love.' Its very nature is kauṭilya — a crooked, teasing playfulness. And that crookedness wins the beloved's heart through its own independence.
The verse pairs two snehas by taste: ghṛta-sneha ('ghee-love,' defined just before) and madhu-sneha ('honey-love'). Ghee is stiff and must be warmed; honey is sweet on its own and runs many ways at once — the metaphor carries the whole contrast this unit turns on.

And it carries with it a special sort of teasing playfulness, narma. This honey-love is named lalita — 'the charming.' So the love that is madhu-sneha, marked by crookedness and playful teasing, is what the ācāryas call the lalita kind.

svātantryaṁ svādhīna-bhartṛkātvaṁ, tena hṛdayaṅgamaṁ kānta-hṛdayāvagāham ||
svādhīna-bhartṛkātvaṁmeans being a svādhīna-bhartṛkā, a woman who keeps her lover under her own swayस्वाधीन-भर्तृका होना (जिसका प्रियतम उसके वश में हो)
tenaand by that independenceउसी के द्वारा
kānta-hṛdayāvagāhammeans sinking deep into the lover's heart avagāha 'plunging into,' as into water; the love submerges itself in his heartप्रेमी के हृदय में डूब जाना
svātantryaṁ — the word 'independence'; svādhīna-bhartṛkātvaṁ — means being a woman who holds her lover in her own control; tena — and by that; hṛdayaṅgamaṁ — 'heart-winning'; kānta-hṛdayāvagāham — means plunging into the lover's heart.
Jīva unpacks two words of the verse. 'Independence' (svātantrya) means being a svādhīna-bhartṛkā — the heroine who keeps her lover under her own control. And 'heart-winning' (hṛdayaṅgama) means, by that very independence, sinking deep into the beloved's heart.
svādhīna-bhartṛkā ('one whose lover is subject to her') is a standard nāyikā-type from alaṅkāra-śāstra, the heroine who has her beloved wholly under her will. Jīva reads the verse's svātantrya as exactly this heroine-status.

kauṭilyaṁ kīdṛśaṁ — crookedness of what kind?; svātantryeṇa hṛdayaṅgamaṁ — one that wins the heart through independence; na tu ghṛta-sneha iva madhu-snehāṁśa-grāhitvena — not, as with ghṛta-sneha, by grabbing a portion of honey-love; iti arthaḥ — this is the meaning.
Viśvanātha asks: crookedness of what kind? His answer draws the sharp contrast. In ghṛta-sneha ('ghee-love'), the crookedness only becomes captivating by grabbing onto a share of madhu-sneha's own quality — it borrows its charm. But madhu-sneha's crookedness stands on its own: it wins the heart purely through its own independence, borrowing nothing. That self-standing sweetness is the whole force of 'honey-love.'
This is the pivot of the unit — the ghṛta/madhu distinction. Ghṛta-sneha is like ghee: stiff, in need of warming, and here able to charm only by taking on ('grasping') a portion of honey-love's crookedness — borrowed sweetness. Madhu-sneha is like honey: sweet of itself, flowing many ways at once, its crookedness captivating on its own strength (svātantrya) with nothing borrowed. Viśvanātha reads the verse's svātantrya as marking exactly this self-standing quality, against Jīva's reading of it as the svādhīna-bhartṛkā heroine-status.
