A certain unnamed gopī drew her brows together and set the flat of her forehead into a frown. Then — as the next line finishes — she gazes at Hari. Watch the word kṛtvā, "having made": the gerund marks the frown as something she did first, and only for a moment. Viśvanātha will press hard on that.

The udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of vāmya-gandhodātta — "the noble, exalted lover (udātta) carrying just a scent (gandha) of contrariness (vāmya)" — the type named in this unit's lead-in (atha vāmya-gandhodātto, yathā śrī-viṣṇu-purāṇe 5.13.45—) and forecast at 14.100. Narrated by Parāśara in the Viṣṇu Purāṇa; it shows the trait in a gopī who, just after Kṛṣṇa reappears from the rāsa dance, frowns for an instant yet drinks in his face — a whiff of pique over a flood of favorable love.

Gazing at him, she drank his lotus-face with her two eyes — eyes that are bees. The image closes on itself: his face is a lotus, her eyes are bees, and the bees sip the flower's honey. The frown was a passing instant; the drinking-in is what fills the line.

Jīva is terse. It is the words "she drank" and what follows — the eager drinking-in of his face — that fix the mood here as dākṣiṇya-bhāva, obliging favorableness. However contrary the frown looks, the abiding love the verse lands on is favorable, not truly hostile.
dākṣiṇya — obliging, compliant favorableness toward the beloved, the opposite of vāmya / adākṣiṇya (contrariness, a withholding of compliance). Jīva reads the drinking-in as settling dākṣiṇya as the abiding mood; the frown is only the "scent of vāmya" that gives the type its name.

bhruvā bhaṅguraṁ kṛtveti — "having made her forehead crooked with the brow"; bahir vāmya-gandha-yuktaṁ — this is the outward side, scented with contrariness; netra-bhṛṅgābhyāṁ papāv iti — "with her bee-eyes she drank" —

Viśvanātha splits the verse into its two showings. The frown — "she knit her forehead with her brow" — gives the outward side, and it is only laced with a scent of vāmya, a passing whiff of contrariness. The other phrase, "with her bee-eyes she drank," he takes up in the next breath.

Now Viśvanātha decodes the grammar to weigh the two feelings. The gerund kṛtvā, "having made," tells you the frown came first and was over quickly — an opening move, and a slight one. So it is only a gandha, a scent, of vāmya, not the real thing. The perfect tense of papau, "she drank," does the opposite work: it marks the drinking as a continuous stream, a draught that keeps flowing. And the two metaphors — eyes turned to bees, face turned to a lotus — bring out her deep clinging attachment (āsakti). Put together, favorableness plainly holds first place. That balance — a whiff of contrariness over a flood of favorable love — is exactly the vāmya-gandhodātta the type is named for.

Viśvanātha adds a second layer. Adducing the verse "kācit karāmbujam..." (Bhāgavata 10.32.4, quoted ahead at UN 14.112), where one gopī takes Kṛṣṇa's lotus-hand and others do their own intimate things, he says: as with those gopīs, so with this one there is also an inner adākṣiṇya, a contrariness lodged beneath the surface. Its evidence here: she comes right up to Kṛṣṇa's side, yet does not touch his body — she drinks him in only with her eyes. That withholding of contact is the inner contrariness. So, he says, the verse should be construed.
Why cited: The verse "kācit karāmbujam" (Bhā. 10.32.4 = UN 14.112) is adduced as a parallel: just as the gopīs there carry an inner adākṣiṇya, so does this gopī, shown by her coming near Kṛṣṇa yet withholding touch — grounding the claim that a contrariness sits beneath her favorable drinking-in.
adākṣiṇya / vāmya — a contrariness, a withholding of compliance toward the beloved; the counterpart of dākṣiṇya. Viśvanātha finds it not on the surface (which is favorable) but antar-gata, lodged within — read out of the fact that she approaches but does not touch.

tato māno jñeyaḥand out of that, māna (loving, offended pride) is to be recognized tataḥ = from that — the melting-plus-pique yields mānaउससे मान जानना चाहिए — द्रव और रोष के मिलने से मान उपजता है

Finally Viśvanātha names the mood. Seeing Kṛṣṇa again after the long gap of his vanishing makes her heart melt — citta-drava, which is sneha. Add her anger at his having disappeared (roṣa), and out of that melting crossed with pique the mood is to be recognized as māna, loving offended pride. The recipe holds: a melting favorable love, cut across by a streak of contrariness, is māna.
māna — a beloved's jealous, offended pride. In this school it arises when sneha (here citta-drava, the heart's melting, from seeing him after long) is crossed by a contrary element (here roṣa, anger at his vanishing). This is the mood the whole vāmya-gandhodātta illustration lands on.
