'Will this endless day really pass?' Worn out by Kṛṣṇa's daylong absence, the gopī can scarcely believe it will ever end.
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of madhyama-prema — the 'middling' love just defined in the previous line (kṛcchrāt sahiṣṇutā yatra…, 14.75) — quoted from Rūpa Gosvāmī's own Uddhava-sandeśa (50), as the lead-in states. A gopī, barely enduring the long day of Kṛṣṇa's absence, longs for the nightfall of his return; the very fact that she endures it only with difficulty marks the love as madhyama.

So here is the point. His indifference — showing her no special love — is just the sort of thing that would kill an ordinary attachment. Yet her clinging to him holds fast, and so her real love, prema, shows itself even then. For Jīva the love-threatening cause is Kṛṣṇa's own coolness toward her.

Here is how the example fits the definition. A full day is four watches long, and she bears that whole stretch only with a struggle. That struggle is exactly the 'endurance-with-difficulty' of the definition — so the verse marks this love as madhyama, the middling grade.

Then Viśvanātha offers a second reading, and does not choose between the two. Read the second line as 'if only my life holds out until then, alas,' and the fourth as 'O fair one, then Kṛṣṇa will surely wipe away our anguish.' On that wording she is not merely barely coping; she endures with genuine, steady patience, trusting he will come. And that steady endurance would make this prauḍha, the mature grade, not madhyama. Both readings stand.
The whole grading turns on one word — sahiṣṇutā, 'endurance.' On the first reading she endures only kṛcchrāt, 'with difficulty' → madhyama (14.75). On this alternative she endures with satya-sahiṣṇutva, 'genuine forbearance,' certain of his return → prauḍha, the higher grade. Viśvanātha lets both readings of the one verse stand and settles neither.

In the night a huge wild elephant, with no fear, flings aside the fences and tramples the lotus-bed thick with buds. So even when the sun at last climbs the sky, the poor lotus that loved him — alas, friend, what joy is left for her? The lotus is the waiting woman, the sun her beloved: the long wait may crush her before the reunion can ever gladden her.

Why cited: adduced from Rūpa's own Vidagdha-mādhava (3.13) as a poetic parallel — as the lotus, longing for the sun, may be trampled before dawn so that even his rising brings her no joy, so the gopī can barely survive the long day's separation until Kṛṣṇa returns; it matches the 'endurance only with difficulty' this udāharaṇa illustrates.

Why does the verse call him 'the son of the King of Vraja'? Because that names him as her paramour, not her husband — and loving such a man draws the world's censure. That censure is a standing cause that would kill an ordinary attachment. Yet her love does not die under it. And that — love surviving the very thing that should destroy it — is the defining mark of prema. (Note: Viśvanātha locates the love-threatening cause in social censure; Jīva located it in Kṛṣṇa's own indifference. One definition, two different threats.)
