sa ca premā udāharaṇa-dṛṣṭyā — and this love, judging by the illustrations; nāyikā-viṣayakaḥ nāyaka-viṣayakaḥ ca avasīyate — is settled to be both heroine-directed and hero-directed.
Viśvanātha first notes: judging by the illustrative verses, this love runs in two directions — one felt toward the heroine, one felt toward the hero.

Of the two, Rūpa now gives the subdivisions of the first — the heroine-directed love — in the line beginning 'sa tridhā.'

ādi-śabdāt kadācid anāgamanena ca — by the word 'ādi', also his sometimes not coming at all; priya-jane nāyikā-rūpe ajñāta-citta-vṛttau sati — when the beloved, the heroine, is in a mood that cannot be read; itarasya nāyaka-rūpasya janasya kleśa-kārī — it brings distress to the other party, the hero; "hanta hanta..." iti khedotpādakaḥ — producing grief in the words 'Alas, alas...'.
The 'and the like' takes in his sometimes not coming at all. When the beloved — the heroine — is in a mood he cannot read, this love torments the other party, the hero. It wells up as the lament: 'Alas, alas! That tender girl — I cannot tell what suffering she is going through today, parted from me.'
Viśvanātha fixes the direction of the illustration: here the 'beloved' (priya jana) is the heroine and the 'other' (itara) who suffers is the hero, who grieves imagining her pain in his absence — the hero-side reading of the mūla's itara-kleśa-kārī.
