L1definition
pūrvasyāṁ sva-sukhāyāpi kadācit tatra sambhavet ||
pūrvasyāmin the former [rati] locative; the identification as samañjasā comes from the commentary, not the word itselfपहली (रति) में
sva-sukhāya apieven for one's own pleasure dative of purpose; api = even — the point is that here self-directed effort is at least possibleअपने सुख के लिए भी
kadācitsometimes, now and thenकभी-कभी
tatrathere, in that [former rati]वहाँ
sambhavetcould arise no subject expressed; carried over from the previous verse(वह) संभव हो सकता है
pūrvasyām — in the former [rati]; tatra — there; sva-sukhāya api — even for one's own pleasure; kadācit — now and then; sambhavet — [an effort] could arise.
In the former rati, an effort even for one's own pleasure may sometimes arise. The subject, "effort," is supplied from the previous verse. The word "sometimes" already draws a contrast: only now and then, and only in this former kind.
The half-verse leaves its subject unstated; the commentators supply udyama, "effort."

iyam eva ratiḥ — this very rati; prauḍhā — once matured; mahābhāva-daśām — the state of mahābhāva; vrajet — would reach.
This very rati, once it grows to full maturity, would rise into the state of mahābhāva.

patnī-bhāva ity atra yad uktam — what was said at 'patnī-bhāva' [14.48]; tad api — that too; punar vyanakti — he makes plain once more; pūrvasyām ity ardhena — through the 'pūrvasyām' half-verse.
Back at verse 14.48, under the heading "patnī-bhāva" (wifely love), a point was already made. Jīva says Rūpa now restates it here, through the half-verse that opens with "pūrvasyām."

pūrvasyām — 'in the former'; samañjasāyām — namely, in the samañjasā [rati]; udyamaḥ — an effort; sambhavet — could arise; iti anvayaḥ — such is the construal.
Jīva fills in the verse: "in the former" means "in the samañjasā rati," and the word to supply is "effort" (udyama). So the line reads: in the samañjasā rati an effort could sometimes arise.

iyam eva iti — 'this very one'; samarthā eṣā ity arthaḥ — means 'this is the samarthā rati'.
When the verse says "this very rati," Jīva glosses: it is the samarthā rati that is meant.
The leading "(50)" is an editorial anvaya/verse-number marker carried over from the source, not part of the sentence.

pūrvasyām ity uktatvāt — because 'in the former' was said; samarthāyāḥ eva prakṛtatvam — that the samarthā alone is the topic at hand; gamyate — is understood.
Why must "this rati" be the samarthā? Because the verse pointedly said "in the former" for the other one. By contrast, then, "this" must be the samarthā — which is in fact the rati under discussion here.

Glossing L3: this mahābhāva is only sought — never actually reached — by those liberated souls and best devotees.

Never mind lesser devotees — even Uddhava shows only a knowledge of the gopīs' greatness. His own words prove it: "Ah, you gopīs have attained the full goal of life."
Why cited: cited to show that even Uddhava stands outside the gopīs' mahābhāva — praising its glory rather than tasting it.

For it was exactly to get such a taste that Uddhava prayed, in the "āsām aho..." verse — longing to be born even as a shrub in Vraja to touch the dust of the gopīs' feet.

And there is a clinching reason: if everyone could taste this mahābhāva, the fivefold grading of devotees would collapse. So it stays the preserve of the few — merely sought by the rest.
The "fivefoldness of devotees" is the chapter's own framework of the five primary loves (śānta, dāsya, sakhya, vātsalya, madhura); levelling everyone into mahābhāva would erase those five ranks.

In the queenly rati, control over Kṛṣṇa comes and goes: sometimes only a slight hold — as when he goes to Kubjā's house, and as Śuka marks by calling her "the ill-fated woman who begged for this" — and sometimes no hold at all. So there the cause is [his own] disposition together with the thirst for union. Whether he is won over or not, the one constant mark in the samañjasā is the wife's sense of "he is my husband." The samarthā rati is different: there the cause is the rati's own nature alone. It is so overwhelmingly strong that even its thirst for union is made of nothing but rati. That, Viśvanātha says, is the point.

In the samarthā it is the reverse. Kṛṣṇa's own words "I cannot repay you," Uddhava's "ah, of these gopīs...," and "not even Lakṣmī wins this intense love" — such statements, and Kṛṣṇa's shows of regard, point to a control over him that is utterly total. And its identifying mark? Lines like "the women who snapped the unbreakable chains of home to worship me," "who left hard-to-forsake kin and the āryas' path," and "who out of pure rāga gave their very selves, heedless of both worlds" — these suggest the one mark: the sense of belonging-to-another, the paramour (parakīyā) identity. That, in brief, is the meaning of the whole chapter.
The two ratis are told apart by their mark (liṅga): patnītva-abhimāna, "I am his wife," for the samañjasā; parakīyātva-abhimāna, "I belong to another," for the samarthā. Viśvanātha names this contrast as the chapter's takeaway.
