An udāharaṇa in Śrī Rukmiṇī's voice illustrating rati — the abiding love (sthāyi-bhāva) that chapter 14 treats. Both included commentators read the verse as showing this love to be nitya-siddha (eternally established): the heard glories of Kṛṣṇa only kindle it, they do not produce it.
यह पद्य श्री रुक्मिणी के मुख का एक उदाहरण है, जो रति — अर्थात् चौदहवें प्रकरण का विषय स्थायी-भाव — को दर्शाता है। दोनों समाविष्ट टीकाकार इस पद्य को इस रति के नित्य-सिद्ध (सदा से सिद्ध) होने का प्रमाण मानते हैं: कृष्ण के सुने हुए गुण इस रति को केवल उद्दीपित करते हैं, उत्पन्न नहीं करते।

ataḥ śruta-guṇa-śriyam ity uddīpanam eva na tūtpādakam |
ataḥtherefore — from the way the verse speaksइसलिए
śruta-guṇa-śriyam itithe phrase 'śruta-guṇa-śriyam' (the glory of heard qualities)'श्रुत-गुण-श्रियम्' यह पद
uddīpanam evais only the kindler (uddīpana) of the love eva = only; uddīpana enkindles an already-present loveकेवल उद्दीपन ही है — पहले से विद्यमान प्रेम को भड़काने वाला
na tu utpādakamnot what produces it na tu = but not; contrasts kindler with producerपरन्तु उत्पादक नहीं — भड़काने वाले और उत्पन्न करने वाले का भेद
ataḥ — therefore; śruta-guṇa-śriyam iti — the words 'the glory of heard qualities'; uddīpanam eva — are only an uddīpana; na tu utpādakam — not its producer.
ataḥ — इसलिए; śruta-guṇa-śriyam iti — 'श्रुत-गुण-श्रियम्' यह पद; uddīpanam eva — केवल उद्दीपन ही (दर्शाता है); na tu utpādakam — उत्पादक नहीं।
So the phrase 'the glory of qualities heard' only kindles the love that is already there. It does not produce that love.
इसलिए 'श्रुत-गुण-श्रियम्' यह पद केवल उद्दीपन को ही दर्शाता है, उत्पन्न करने वाले को नहीं।

utpādakaḥ tu — the producer, rather; tam eva iti — is the word 'tam eva', him alone (Kṛṣṇa himself).
utpādakaḥ tu — परन्तु उत्पादक तो; tam eva iti — 'तम् एव' यह पद है।
The producer, rather, is what 'tam eva' points to — Kṛṣṇa himself. He, as the one she loves, is the ground the love springs from; the heard glory only fans it.
परन्तु उत्पादक तो 'तम् एव' यह पद है।

yadu-puṅgavam iti — by 'yadu-puṅgavam'; anayoḥ — of these two (the kindler 'heard glory' and the producer 'him'); vācyaḥ eva jñeyaḥ — the one referent is precisely to be known.
yadu-puṅgavam iti — 'यदु-पुङ्गवम्' यह पद; anayoḥ — इन दोनों का; vācyaḥ eva jñeyaḥ — वाच्य एक ही जानना चाहिए।
And by 'yadu-puṅgavam' we learn who both of these point to. The heard qualities and the 'him alone' name one and the same person — Kṛṣṇa, chief of the Yadus.
'यदु-पुङ्गवम्' यह पद दिखाता है कि इन दोनों ('श्रुत-गुण-श्री' और 'तम् एव') का वाच्य एक ही है — यह जानना चाहिए।
