'Fist-graspable darkness' is a bold hyperbole spoken by the character the poet has framed; taken plainly it just means the darkness was extremely dense.
prauḍhokti — a poetic device of bold overstatement; kavi-nibaddha-vaktṛ, 'the poet-framed speaker', flags that the exaggeration belongs to the character, so it is not asserted as literal fact.
