ālī-yukti-kuṭhārikā-paṭimābhir yo na prapede chidāṁ
ālī-yukti-kuṭhārikā-paṭimābhiḥby the keen hatchet-edges that are the girlfriends' arguments — the sakhīs' clever persuasions are axes; paṭimā is the blade's sharpness instrumental of means; the whole verse is one sustained rūpaka — māna is a tree, the arguments are the felling axesसखियों की युक्तियोंरूपी कुठारियों की पैनी धार के द्वारा
yaḥwhich [tree of māna]जो (मानरूपी वृक्ष)
chidāṁ na prapededid not get split — the tree never came to be cut through chidām (a splitting) is the accusative object of prapede 'came to, underwent'कटने (छेदन) को प्राप्त नहीं हुआ
yaḥ — which māna-tree; ālī-yukti-kuṭhārikā-paṭimābhiḥ — by the sharp hatchets of the girlfriends' arguments; chidāṁ na prapede — did not get split.
Picture māna, the jealous sulk, as a great tree. The girlfriends come at it with all their clever arguments — sharp as hatchet-blades. And they cannot split it.
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of śānti, 'the subsiding of a risen emotion' — the vyabhicāri-bhāva just introduced by the lead-in 'atha śāntiḥ, yathā—'. The whole verse runs one sustained rūpaka: māna is a towering tree; the sakhīs' arguments are hatchets (L1), the go-between's talk a torrent (L2), and the flute-note a mere breath of wind (L3-L4) that alone topples it — and that toppling is the śānti.

dūtī-jalpita-nirjhareṇa ca ciraṁ yaḥ kvāpi noccālitaḥ |
dūtī-jalpita-nirjhareṇaby the mountain-torrent that is the go-between's chatter — the dūtī's flood of coaxing talk is a rushing waterfall instrumental of means; the rūpaka continues — a second, watery assault on the treeदूती की बातोंरूपी झरने (जलप्रवाह) के द्वारा
caand [a second means after the axe]और
ciramfor a long timeबहुत देर तक
kvāpi na uccālitaḥwas not budged even a little — never once shaken loose kvāpi 'in any way at all' drives the negation to 'not in the slightest'किसी भी प्रकार से तनिक भी हिलाया न जा सका
yaḥ — which tree; dūtī-jalpita-nirjhareṇa ca — and by the torrent of the go-between's talk; ciraṁ — for a long while; kvāpi na uccālitaḥ — was in no way shaken.
Then the go-between arrives, a whole rushing flood of coaxing talk. She works at it a long time. And still the tree does not shift, not even slightly.

vaṁśī-nāda-marul-lavena kamalā-cetas taṭī-veṣṭano
vaṁśī-nāda-marul-lavenaby a mere wisp of the wind that is the flute's sound — the flute-note is only a breath of air instrumental of means; lava 'a trace' sets the gentlest instrument against the axe and the torrentवंशी के स्वररूपी पवन के हल्के झोंके के द्वारा
kamalā-cetas-taṭī-veṣṭanaḥ[the tree] whose roots grip the riverbank that is Kamalā's heart — her heart is the bank on which the māna-tree stands bahuvrīhi describing the tree; the rūpaka gives māna a place to rootजिसका घेरा (जड़) कमला के चित्तरूपी तट पर फैला हुआ है, ऐसा
kamalā-cetas-taṭī-veṣṭanaḥ — [the tree] whose grip enfolds the bank that is Kamalā's heart; vaṁśī-nāda-marul-lavena — by a mere breath of the flute-sound's wind [carries into L4].
This tree is rooted in a riverbank — and that bank is Kamalā's heart. Now comes only a wisp of wind: the sound of the flute.

mānākhyaḥ prabalonnatis tarur ayaṁ na kṣipram unmūlyate ||
māna-ākhyaḥnamed māna — the jealous sulk (the tree's identity in the rūpaka)'मान' नामवाला
prabala-unnatiḥtowering high — of mighty stature; the tree's great height stands for the intensity of the mānaअत्यन्त ऊँचा (बलवान् और उन्नत)
taruḥ ayamthis treeयह वृक्ष
na kṣipram unmūlyateis it not torn up by the roots in an instant? — meaning it certainly is (kṣipram 'at once'; unmūlyate 'is uprooted') this na is the rhetorical-question na (kāku), not a flat denial — the māna IS uprooted, and that toppling is the śānti the verse illustratesक्या शीघ्र ही जड़ से नहीं उखड़ जाता?
māna-ākhyaḥ prabala-unnatiḥ ayaṁ taruḥ — this towering tree named māna; vaṁśī-nāda-marul-lavena — by a mere breath of the flute-wind; kṣipram na unmūlyate — is it not uprooted in a moment? [i.e. it is].
Here is the wonder. The axe of argument failed; the flood of coaxing failed. But one thin breath of the flute topples the whole towering tree in a moment. The māna dissolves away — and that dissolving is śānti.

śāntir bhāvasya layaḥ |
śāntiḥśānti (the quelling) — the vyabhicāri-bhāva being definedशान्ति (नामक व्यभिचारी भाव)
bhāvasyaof a feeling that had risen up(उठे हुए) भाव का
layaḥis the dissolving-away — its melting back downलय (शमन, विलीन हो जाना) है
śāntiḥ — śānti is; bhāvasya — of a [risen] feeling; layaḥ — the melting-away.
Viśvanātha gives the definition first: śānti is when a feeling that had flared up dissolves and settles back down. Here the feeling is māna.

ālītithe verse beginning 'ālī…' iti marks the pratīka — the opening word standing in for the whole verse'आली' इत्यादि (श्लोक)—यह आरम्भिक शब्द पूरे श्लोक का प्रतीक है
nāndīmukhī — Nāndīmukhī; āha — speaks; ālīti — the verse beginning 'ālī…'.
Viśvanātha names the speaker: it is Nāndīmukhī who recites this verse, the one that opens with 'ālī…'.
The speaker's name comes from Viśvanātha; the mūla itself does not name her.

marul-laveṇeti |
marul-laveṇa iti[taking up the words] 'by a mere breath of wind' — the flute-note of L3 iti flags the lemma he is about to comment on; the point lands in the next sentence'मरुल्-लव' (पवन का झोंका)—यह पद (जिस पर आगे टिप्पणी है)
marul-laveṇa iti — [on the phrase] 'by a mere breath of wind'.
Now he picks up the phrase 'by a mere breath of wind' — that is, the flute-sound — to draw out its force.

vyañjitamis what the verse suggests — carried by dhvani, not stated outrightव्यंजित (सूचित) की गई है
vaṁśī-nāda-ārambha-mātrasya api — of even the mere onset of the flute-sound; sarva-upāyebhyaḥ — than all the other devices; ādhikyam — the greater force; vyañjitam — is suggested.
Here is the point the verse leaves unspoken but implies: even the first faint note of the flute outdoes every other device. The sharp arguments could not cut the māna; the flood of coaxing could not budge it; but a mere breath of the flute topples it at once. That is the flute's superiority over them all.
vyañjita is a technical term of Sanskrit poetics: the meaning is conveyed by vyañjanā (suggestion / dhvani), implied by the verse rather than said in so many words.
