projjhitā layam iyaṁ vana-mālā |
projjhitācast off, shaken loose pra-ud-√ujjh, fem. agreeing with vana-mālā; it reaches back to 'guṇa-saṅga-' in the opening foot → 'cast off from its bond with the thread'(धागे के) संग से छूटकर, त्याग दी गई — (आरम्भ-चरण के 'गुण-संग' से जुड़कर) अपने धागे के बन्धन से मुक्त हुई
layamto its undoing — let it go there acc., the goal of the 'yātu' supplied from the opening foot; laya = dissolution, and also 'liberation' — the second sense the commentators draw outलय को — अर्थात् विनाश को, और मोक्ष को भी (यह दूसरा अर्थ टीकाकार खींचते हैं)
iyaṁthis one hereयह
iyaṁ vana-mālā — this forest-garland; guṇa-saṅga-projjhitā — cast off from its bond with the thread; layam [yātu] — let it go to its undoing.
Let this forest-garland, shaken loose from the thread that strung it, go to its ruin. But the words carry a second layer: laya is also 'liberation', and guṇa (in the previous foot) is also 'the guṇas' — so the very curse also reads, 'freed from all contact with the guṇas, let it attain release.'
An udāharaṇa introduced by the lead-in 'dveṣeṇa, yathā—', 'by way of aversion, as follows': the verse is spoken in Rādhā's voice against the garland on Kṛṣṇa's chest. Viśvanātha, below, names the transient emotion it reveals as cāpala (fickleness).

yā kadāpy akhila-saukhya-padaṁ naḥ
yāthe one which — i.e. the garland rel. pron., fem., picking up vana-mālāजो (वनमाला)
kadāpiever, at any time — (with the 'na' in the next line) never once kadā + api; the api generalizes it across all timeकभी भी (किसी भी समय) — 'अपि' इसे सर्वकाल में फैला देता है
akhila-saukhya-padaṁthe seat of all our happiness neut. acc., standing in apposition to 'kaṇṭham' in L3 — his neck is that seatसमस्त सुख का स्थान (आश्रय) है जो — (आगे L3 के 'कण्ठ' के साथ समानाधिकरण में; उसका कण्ठ ही वह स्थान है)
naḥof us — ourहमारे (लिए)
yā — the garland which; naḥ akhila-saukhya-padaṁ [asya kaṇṭham] — [clings to] his neck, the seat of all our happiness; kadāpi na [jahāti] — and never once [leaves it].
This is the garland that clings to his neck — and his neck is the seat of every happiness that is ours. Not once, at any time, does she loosen her hold.

kaṇṭham asya kuṭilā na jahāti ||
kaṇṭhamhis neck acc., the thing not abandonedकण्ठ को — जिसे वह नहीं छोड़ती
kuṭilāthe crooked one fem. nom.; literal 'winding, curved' (a garland loops), and figurative 'sly, scheming' — Rādhā's jealous epithet for a rivalकुटिला — शब्दशः 'टेढ़ी, बल खाई हुई' (माला बल खाकर लिपटती है), और लाक्षणिक रूप से 'छली, कुटिल स्वभाव वाली' (सौत के लिए राधा का ईर्ष्यापूर्ण सम्बोधन)
na jahātinever leaves, will not let go with kadāpi from L2 = 'never once'नहीं छोड़ती — (L2 के 'कदापि' के साथ) कभी एक बार भी नहीं छोड़ती
kuṭilā — the crooked one; asya kaṇṭham — his neck; kadāpi na jahāti — never once leaves.
The crooked thing never leaves his neck. 'Crooked' cuts both ways: the garland literally winds and curves, and Rādhā throws it as 'the sly one' — the rival she cannot dislodge.

Jīva does one thing: he pins the word order. Join 'yātu' (from the verse's opening foot) with 'layam' — 'let it go to dissolution.' The verb sits far from its object, so he spells out the link the reader must make.

nāśaṁ mokṣaṁ cameans destruction — and also liberation ca yokes both senses at once; this is the śleṣaविनाश और मोक्ष — दोनों को ('च' दोनों अर्थ एक साथ जोड़ता है; यही श्लेष है)
yātu prāpnotu'yātu' = let it reach, let it go to'यातु' अर्थात् प्राप्त हो जाए
layaṁ — 'laya'; nāśaṁ mokṣaṁ ca — destruction and also liberation; yātu — let it attain (prāpnotu).
Viśvanātha opens the first pun. 'Laya' means two things at the same time: destruction, and liberation. And 'yātu' is 'let it attain.' So the line reads on its face 'let the garland perish' and, underneath, 'let it win release.'

guṇaḥ — 'guṇa'; sūtraṁ — the thread; sattvādiś ca — and also sattva etc., the guṇas.
The second pun. 'Guṇa' is the thread the flowers are strung on — and also the guṇas, sattva and the rest. So 'guṇa-saṅga-projjhitā' reads at once as 'shaken loose from its thread' and as 'freed from bondage to the guṇas' — the very language of a soul reaching mokṣa.

Viśvanātha names what the verse displays. The very act of cursing the garland out of hatred lays bare cāpala — impetuous fickleness, one of the transient emotions. And here that fickleness takes the form of gāmbhīrya, gravity of feeling: even her rash outburst is the surface of something profound.
cāpala — 'fickleness, impetuosity', one of the vyabhicāri-bhāvas catalogued in this chapter. gāmbhīrya — 'depth, gravity' of feeling; the point is the paradox that her impulsive curse rises from the deepest emotion.
