An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) for bhaya, 'fear' — the vyabhicāri-bhāva named in this unit's lead-in, 'bhayena, yathā—.' Her fear is of exposure: a sudden trembling at Kṛṣṇa's flute could betray her love for him before her husband, so she must disguise it.

At the sound of the flute a trembling breaks out in her — because that flute is Kṛṣṇa's.

Viśvanātha sets a different scene. Some friend of Lalitā — one of Rādhā's own group — has heard the tale of Candrāvalī from somewhere. She comes into the circle of friends and, raising it as a topic of talk, recites the verse. This differs from Jīva: for Jīva the speaker belongs to Candrāvalī's camp; for Viśvanātha she belongs to Lalitā's (Rādhā's) camp.

At the very instant the flute sounded, as luck had it the clouds thundered too. She seizes on this: 'Curse these thunderclaps of the clouds — they make me shake with fright!' Saying so, she dumps the whole blame onto the clouds' head. The 'eva' is the point: the fault goes on the clouds alone, so the flute — the real cause — is never named.
