In her heart she carries love for you.
An udāharaṇa of hrī and bhaya together — shame and fear, two of the transient emotions (vyabhicāri-bhāva) of prakaraṇa 13; the lead-in 'hrī-bhayābhyāṁ, yathā—' names both. The verse is spoken by Rādhā's messenger to Kṛṣṇa.

The śamī is the tree whose wood kindles the sacrificial fire, so fire is said to live within it. That hidden fire is the image for her hidden love.

—she appears fresh and unburnt, by the power of kṣamā. This is the headline of the verse: kṣamā carries two meanings at once. For the girl it is her forbearance — she bears the burning quietly. For the tree it is the earth (kṣamā = pṛthivī), whose nourishment keeps the śamī green outside even while fire smoulders within.
The whole verse runs on this śleṣa. One image, two readings held together: the śamī green outside though fire burns in its core (kṣamā = earth), and the girl fresh-faced though love blazes within (kṣamā = forbearance). The commentators split the two readings out below.
