Only the ripe betel-leaf is tasty, yet the girlfriends handed her a tender shoot. Understand why: in separation her body burns, so they meant the tender leaf as something cooling.
यद्यपि पान की लता का पका पत्ता ही स्वादिष्ट होता है, फिर भी सखियों ने किसलय (कोमल कोंपल) दिया — यह विरह में शीतल प्रयोग की दृष्टि से, ऐसा समझना चाहिए।

Rādhā here is the vipralabdhā — the heroine whose tryst has failed. Vṛndā, bringing her separation-pain out into the open, speaks to Kṛṣṇa: she does not remember the betel she took, and does not even register whether it is still in her hand.
विप्रलब्धा राधा की विरह-पीड़ा को प्रकट करती हुई वृन्दा श्रीकृष्ण से कहती है — लिया हुआ तांबूल भी उसे याद नहीं रहता, और हाथ में है या नहीं, इसका भी उसे कोई भान नहीं।
vipralabdhā: the heroine-type kept waiting at the tryst by a lover who never came.
विप्रलब्धा वह नायिका है जिसे संकेत-स्थल पर बिठाकर उसका प्रियतम आया ही नहीं, और वह प्रतीक्षा करती ठगी-सी रह गई।
