Here is why they smile: Rādhā had waved her friends off and taken Kṛṣṇa on single-handed in the water-duel. Now she cannot keep it up — her strength is gone, only her pride is still standing. Seeing her like that, the friends smile. So Viśvanātha unpacks the 'smiling.'
