roṣa-gadgada-padaiḥ iti — 'रोष-गद्गद-पदैः' इस पद की व्याख्या का आरम्भ।
Jīva picks up the phrase roṣa-gadgada-padaiḥ ('words faltering with anger') to gloss it.
'रोष-गद्गद-पदैः' — इस पद को लेकर व्याख्या की जाती है।

padamthe word 'pada''पद' शब्द का अर्थ
atrahere, in this compoundयहाँ (इस प्रसंग में)
vyavasāyaḥmeans vyavasāya — resolve, a determined utteranceव्यवसाय (निश्चय, संकल्प)
padam — the word 'pada'; atra — here; vyavasāyaḥ — [means] vyavasāya, resolve/determination.
atra — यहाँ; padam — 'पद' शब्द; vyavasāyaḥ — व्यवसाय (के अर्थ में)।
Here Jīva reads pada not as 'word' but as vyavasāya — a resolve, a determined utterance. So 'roṣa-gadgada-padaiḥ' is 'with anger-faltering resolves.'
यहाँ 'पद' शब्द का अर्थ व्यवसाय — अर्थात् निश्चय — है।
'pada' is a nānārtha (many-meaning) word; Jīva selects the sense vyavasāya (resolve). Viśvanātha, by contrast, will take pada in its grammatical sense (a word ending in a case- or verb-suffix) — the two commentators are not harmonized here.

He backs the gloss from the lexicon: its nānārtha-varga (the list of many-meaning words) enters pada as vyavasita, 'the resolved,' and the like.
'पद (शब्द का अर्थ) व्यवसित इत्यादि है' — ऐसा नानार्थ-वर्ग (कोश) से (उद्धृत है)।
Why cited: cited from the lexicon's nānārtha-varga as lexical authority that 'pada' bears the sense vyavasāya / vyavasita (resolve), backing Jīva's reading of roṣa-gadgada-padaiḥ.
क्यों उद्धृत: कोश के नानार्थ-वर्ग से यह शाब्दिक प्रमाण दिया गया कि 'पद' का अर्थ व्यवसाय/व्यवसित (निश्चय) होता है — इससे 'रोष-गद्गद-पदैः' का जीव-सम्मत अर्थ पुष्ट होता है।

atra — here; vyabhicāriṇaḥ roṣa iti asya — of the transient emotion named outright by the word 'roṣa'; sva-śabda-vācyatvam nāma doṣaḥ — the fault called 'being denoted by its own word'; na āśaṅkanīyaḥ — need not be apprehended.
atra — यहाँ; roṣa iti asya vyabhicāriṇaḥ — 'रोष' पद से कहे गए व्यभिचारी भाव का; sva-śabda-vācyatvam nāma doṣaḥ — स्व-शब्द-वाच्यत्व नामक दोष; na āśaṅkanīyaḥ — आशंकनीय नहीं।
Now an objection could be raised. roṣa is a vyabhicāri-bhāva, a passing emotion, and the poeticians count it a flaw — 'sva-śabda-vācyatva' — to name such an emotion outright by its own word rather than suggest it. Viśvanātha heads it off: no such fault need be feared here.
यहाँ 'रोष' — यह व्यभिचारी (संचारी) भाव अपने ही शब्द से कहा गया है, अतः स्व-शब्द-वाच्यत्व नामक दोष की आशंका नहीं करनी चाहिए।
sva-śabda-vācyatva = the poeticians' rule that a bhāva ought to be suggested (vyañjanā), not stated by its own name; stating it directly is normally reckoned a doṣa. The reply follows in the next segments.
स्व-शब्द-वाच्यत्व — आलंकारिकों का यह नियम कि भाव को व्यंजना से सूचित करना चाहिए, अपने ही नाम से सीधे नहीं कहना चाहिए; सीधे कहना सामान्यतः दोष माना जाता है। इसका उत्तर आगे के खण्डों में आता है।

So naming roṣa outright actually sets up two ornaments at once: hetu (poetic cause-and-effect) and svabhāvokti (description true to life). That heightens the camatkāra, the burst of aesthetic wonder. Far from a flaw, naming it is a gain.
'गद्गद' इत्यादि जो अनुभाव हैं, रोष उनका हेतु है; अतः उस रोष को साक्षात् नाम से कह देने से ही हेतु-अलंकार तथा स्वभावोक्ति उपस्थित हो जाते हैं, जिससे चमत्कार की अधिकता पुष्ट होती है — इसलिए (यह दोष नहीं)।
hetv-alaṅkāra = the figure in which cause and effect are shown together; svabhāvokti = lifelike depiction of a thing's own nature. Naming the cause (roṣa) beside its effects (gadgada etc.) is exactly what these two figures need.
हेतु-अलंकार — वह अलंकार जिसमें कारण और कार्य साथ-साथ दिखाए जाते हैं; स्वभावोक्ति — किसी वस्तु के अपने स्वरूप का सजीव चित्रण। कारण (रोष) को उसके कार्यों (गद्गद आदि) के साथ नाम से कहना ठीक वही है जो इन दोनों अलंकारों को अपेक्षित है।

na tu — but not; jāta-gadgada-padaiḥ iti pāṭhe — in the reading 'jāta-gadgada-padaiḥ'; tasya gamyamānatvena — since there roṣa is only implied; tathā camatkāraḥ — [there is] not the same camatkāra; iti dhyeyam — bear this in mind.
na tu — परन्तु नहीं; jāta-gadgada-padaiḥ iti pāṭhe — 'जात-गद्गद-पदैः' इस पाठ में; tasya gamyamānatvena — उस रोष के केवल गम्यमान होने से; tathā camatkāraḥ — वैसा चमत्कार; iti dhyeyam — ऐसा ध्यान देने योग्य है।
By contrast, in the variant jāta-gadgada-padaiḥ, roṣa is only hinted at, not named — so it does not yield that same camatkāra. Keep this in view: the reading that names roṣa is the richer one.
परन्तु 'जात-गद्गद-पदैः' इस पाठ में रोष केवल गम्यमान (व्यंग्य से सूचित) रह जाता है, अतः वैसा चमत्कार नहीं होता — यह ध्यान में रखना चाहिए।
This is the very pāṭhāntara Jīva recorded (c1-jiva.s2). Viśvanātha does not suspend the two readings evenly — he judges roṣa-gadgada the more charged.
यह वही पाठान्तर है जिसे जीव ने दर्ज किया था (c1-jiva.s2)। विश्वनाथ दोनों पाठों को समान भार से लम्बित नहीं रखते — वे 'रोष-गद्गद' को अधिक चमत्कारपूर्ण मानते हैं।

Besides, the rhetoricians themselves never held that this 'direct-naming' fault applies across the board — to every vyabhicāri-bhāva, every rasa, every sthāyi-bhāva. It was never a blanket rule.
और व्यभिचारी, रस तथा स्थायी भावों के 'शब्द-वाच्यता' रूप उस दोष-लक्षण का सर्वत्र लागू होना आलंकारिकों को अभिमत भी नहीं है।

yad uktam kāvya-prakāśe eva — as said in the Kāvya-prakāśa itself; sañcāriṇaḥ sva-padena uktau api — even when a sañcārin is stated by its own word; kvacit — in some cases; na doṣaḥ — no fault; iti — thus.
yad uktam kāvya-prakāśe eva — जो काव्य-प्रकाश में ही कहा गया — 'na doṣaḥ sva-padena uktau api sañcāriṇaḥ kvacit' — संचारी भाव का अपने ही पद से कथन होने पर भी कहीं-कहीं दोष नहीं; iti — ऐसा।
And he clinches it with the Kāvya-prakāśa's own line: 'Sometimes it is no fault even when a sañcāri-bhāva is stated by its own word.'
जैसा काव्य-प्रकाश में ही कहा गया है — 'संचारी भाव का कहीं-कहीं अपने ही पद से कथन होने पर भी दोष नहीं होता'।
Why cited: cited from Mammaṭa's Kāvya-prakāśa — the poeticians' own handbook — as authority that directly naming a sañcārin (vyabhicāri-bhāva) is not always a fault, clinching Viśvanātha's dismissal of the sva-śabda-vācyatva objection.
क्यों उद्धृत: मम्मट के काव्य-प्रकाश से — आलंकारिकों के अपने ही ग्रन्थ से — यह प्रमाण दिया गया कि संचारी (व्यभिचारी) भाव को सीधे नाम से कहना सर्वत्र दोष नहीं है; इससे विश्वनाथ का स्व-शब्द-वाच्यत्व-दोष का निराकरण दृढ़ हो जाता है।
