L1example
abhyukṣya niṣkaṁ patayālunā muhuḥ
abhyukṣyahaving sprinkled / after wetting [it] absolutive; the deed done before she stood fixed (L2)भिगो देने पर (छिड़ककर, यह क्रिया पहले हुई)
niṣkaṁher golden pendant (niṣka) object of abhyukṣyaनिष्क (स्वर्ण-पदक) को
patayālunāwith the [sweat] that keeps trickling down instrumental (with svedena, L2); -ālu = 'prone to', so patayālu = 'apt to fall/drip'बार-बार टपकने वाले (पसीने) के द्वारा
muhuḥagain and againबार-बार
niṣkaṁ — her golden pendant; patayālunā [svedena] — with the sweat that keeps dripping; muhuḥ — again and again; abhyukṣya — having sprinkled [it].
abhyukṣya — भिगो देने पर; niṣkaṁ — स्वर्ण-पदक को; patayālunā — बार-बार टपकने वाले (पसीने) से; muhuḥ — बार-बार।
Again and again she wets her golden pendant with sweat that keeps trickling down her.
(कृष्ण कहते हैं—) बार-बार टपकते हुए पसीने से उसका स्वर्ण-पदक बार-बार भीग गया।
An udāharaṇa illustrating stambha ('stupefaction'), the first of the eight sāttvika-bhāvas, as it arises from harṣa ('joy'); the illustrative verse is Dāna-keli-kaumudī 36. Kṛṣṇa is the speaker (so Viśvanātha).
यह उदाहरण-श्लोक स्तम्भ का है, जो आठ सात्त्विक भावों में पहला है और यहाँ हर्ष से उत्पन्न हुआ है; उद्धृत श्लोक दान-केलि-कौमुदी का छत्तीसवाँ है। विश्वनाथ के अनुसार बोलने वाले कृष्ण हैं।

svedena niṣkampatayā vyavasthitā |
svedenawith [her] sweat instrumental, completing patayālunā of L1पसीने से (यही L1 के 'पतयालु' को पूरा करता है)
niṣkampatayābecause she does not tremble at all — by her utter stillness instrumental of cause/manner; note the sound-echo with 'niṣkaṁ pata-' of L1 (a yamaka)क्योंकि वह निष्कम्प (कम्परहित) रही
vyavasthitāshe stood fixed in place feminine — Rādhikā (named in L4)स्थिर खड़ी रही (राधिका)
svedena — with her sweat; niṣkampatayā — because she does not stir at all; vyavasthitā — she stood fixed.
svedena — पसीने से; niṣkampatayā — निष्कम्प रहने के कारण; vyavasthitā — स्थिर खड़ी रही।
With that sweat, and utterly still, she stood rooted to the spot. This motionlessness is the stambha itself.
पसीने से (वह पदक भीगा) और वह बिना काँपे स्थिर खड़ी रही।
A yamaka runs across the two lines: 'niṣkaṁ pata-' (L1) is echoed in 'niṣkampa-' (L2) — the pendant and her non-trembling chime on the same syllables.
दोनों पंक्तियों में यमक चलता है — L1 का 'निष्कं पत-' L2 में 'निष्कम्प-' बनकर गूँजता है; पदक और उसका न काँपना एक ही अक्षरों पर मिलते हैं।

pañcālikā-kuñcita-locanā kathaṁ
pañcālikā-she who has five [ālaya] about her — 'the girl of the five' śleṣa: the same word also means 'a doll', the pun the verse springs in L4; Viśvanātha reads the five as her five friends (sakhī), Jīva leaves them as 'abodes'पञ्चालिका — जिसकी पाँच (सखियाँ/निवास) हैं, वह (यही शब्द 'पुतली' भी है)
-kuñcita-locanāher eyes drawn in / narrowed second bahuvrīhi epithet, coordinate with pañcālikāऔर जिसके नेत्र मुँदे हुए हैं, वह
kathaṁhow [is it that]…? opens Kṛṣṇa's astonished question, completed by avāpa in L4कैसे (कृष्ण का विस्मय-भरा प्रश्न, जो L4 में पूरा होता है)
pañcālikā — the girl of the five [friends]; kuñcita-locanā — her eyes narrowed; kathaṁ — how is it that…?
pañcālikā- — पाँच (सखियों) वाली; kuñcita-locanā — मुँदे नेत्रों वाली; kathaṁ — कैसे।
There she stands, the girl amid her five companions, her eyes drawn in — how, Kṛṣṇa asks, has she come to…?
पाँच सखियों वाली, मुँदे नेत्रों वाली राधा कैसे...
'pañcālikā' is the śleṣa the verse turns on: here it names Rādhā as 'the girl of the five [friends/abodes]', but in L4 the same word means 'a doll'. Both commentators flag the double sense.
यहीं 'पञ्चालिका' वह श्लेष है जिस पर श्लोक घूमता है — यहाँ यह राधा को 'पाँच (सखियों/निवासों) वाली कन्या' कहता है, पर L4 में वही शब्द 'पुतली' अर्थ देता है। दोनों टीकाकार इस द्वि-अर्थ को इंगित करते हैं।
L4example
pañcālikā-dharmam avāpa rādhikā ||
pañcālikā-dharmamthe condition of a doll (pañcālikā = a puppet/figurine) the doll-sense of the pun — object of avāpaपुतली के स्वभाव को (श्लेष का पुतली-अर्थ, 'पा लिया' का कर्म)
avāpahas she come to / taken on perfect, answering kathaṁ of L3पा लिया (L3 के 'कैसे' का उत्तर)
rādhikāRādhikā [the subject]राधिका ने
kathaṁ (L3) — how; rādhikā — Rādhikā; pañcālikā-dharmam — the condition of a doll; avāpa — has come to take on?
pañcālikā-dharmam — पुतली के स्वभाव को; avāpa — पा लिया; rādhikā — राधिका ने।
…how has Rādhikā taken on the very nature of a doll — standing stiff and unmoving like a puppet? The wit is in the repeated word: the 'pañcālikā' who is the girl of the five friends has turned into a 'pañcālikā', a doll — stunned motionless with joy.
राधिका पुतली-सी (निश्चल) हो गई।
The śleṣa lands here: 'pañcālikā', which named her companions in L3, now means 'doll'. The living girl among her friends has gone as still as a puppet — stambha born of harṣa.
श्लेष यहाँ उतरता है — जो 'पञ्चालिका' L3 में उसकी सखियों को नाम देती थी, वही अब 'पुतली' बन जाती है। सखियों के बीच खड़ी जीती-जागती कन्या पुतली-सी निश्चल हो गई — हर्ष से जन्मा स्तम्भ।

niṣkam — पदक को; abhyukṣya — भिगोकर; patayālunā — टपकने वाले; svedena — पसीने से।
Jīva restrings the verse's scattered words in plain order: she wets the golden pendant with sweat that keeps trickling down.
टपकते हुए पसीने से पदक को भिगोकर।
Jīva gathers niṣkaṁ and patayālunā (L1) with svedena (L2) into their construe order, so the sentence reads straight.
जीव L1 के 'निष्कं' और 'पतयालु' को L2 के 'स्वेद' के साथ अन्वय-क्रम में जोड़ देते हैं, जिससे वाक्य सीधा पढ़ा जाता है।

pañca — पाँच; ālayaḥ — निवास; yasyāḥ — जिसके; sā — वह।
Jīva parses the first 'pañcālikā' as a bahuvrīhi: 'she who has five abodes' — that is Rādhā. He leaves it at 'abodes' (ālaya); it is Viśvanātha who will specify these as her five friends.
'पञ्चालिका' अर्थात् जिसके पाँच निवास हैं, वह।

uttaratra — आगे; pañcālikā — पञ्चालिका; pratimā — पुतली।
But in its second occurrence, Jīva notes, 'pañcālikā' means a doll or image. So Jīva himself splits the pun: 'five-abodes-girl' the first time, 'doll' the second — the two senses the verse plays on.
आगे (चौथे पद में) 'पञ्चालिका' का अर्थ पुतली है।

Viśvanātha sets the scene: it is Kṛṣṇa who speaks these words, and he speaks them to Madhumaṅgala. He names the verse by its first word, 'abhyukṣya'.
श्रीकृष्ण मधुमंगल से 'अभ्युक्ष्य' (आरम्भ वाला) श्लोक कहते हैं।
Madhumaṅgala — Kṛṣṇa's brāhmaṇa companion; Viśvanātha supplies him as the listener to whom Kṛṣṇa marvels at Rādhā.

'The doll's nature' means the character of a puppet — rigid, unmoving. Viśvanātha resolves the pun into a simile: by this second sense of 'pañcālikā', the doll is offered as the comparison for Rādhikā. She has become, as it were, a figurine.
'पञ्चालिका-धर्म' का अर्थ पुतली का स्वभाव; इस श्लेष से राधिका की उपमा पुतली से दी गई है, ऐसा समझना चाहिए।

sākṣāt-rati-bharatvenabecause it is charged full of rati felt straight [for Kṛṣṇa] instrumental of cause; sākṣāt = 'directly', bhara = 'a full load of'क्योंकि यहाँ साक्षात् रति का पूरा भार है, उसके कारण
stambhaḥ ayaṁthis stambhaयह स्तम्भ
snigdhaḥis a 'tender' (snigdha) oneस्निग्ध (कोमल) है
mukhyaḥand a primary (mukhya) oneऔर मुख्य है
sākṣāt-rati-bharatvena — because it is charged with rati felt directly [for Kṛṣṇa]; ayaṁ stambhaḥ — this stambha; snigdhaḥ mukhyaḥ — is snigdha and mukhya.
sākṣāt-rati-bharatvena — साक्षात् रति के पूर्ण भार के कारण; stambhaḥ ayaṁ — यह स्तम्भ; snigdhaḥ — स्निग्ध; mukhyaḥ — मुख्य।
Viśvanātha classifies it: since this stambha is charged with rati felt straight toward Kṛṣṇa, it is snigdha ('tender') and mukhya ('primary') — the top grade of sāttvika.
कृष्ण-रति सीधे इसका कारण होने से यह स्तम्भ स्निग्ध है और मुख्य भी।
In the sāttvika taxonomy a reaction is snigdha ('tender'), digdha ('smeared'), or rūkṣa ('dry') by how directly Kṛṣṇa-love drives it: snigdha springs straight from rati for Kṛṣṇa (like a lotus that is itself blue), digdha and rūkṣa arise only at a remove. A snigdha one is further mukhya ('primary') when overrun by the main rati, gauṇa ('secondary') otherwise. Rādhā's stambha, born of her direct love, is snigdha and mukhya both.
