L1definition
apalāpas tu pūrvoktasyānyathā yojanaṁ bhavet ||
apalāpaḥapalāpa (disowning one's own words) is — nominative — the term being definedअपलाप (जिसका यहाँ लक्षण कहा जा रहा है)
tunow (turning to the next symptom)परन्तु (पहले के अलंकार से भेद दिखाने के लिए)
pūrva-uktasyaof a thing said before genitive — what the re-fitting works onपहले कहे हुए वाक्य का
anyathā yojanamthe fitting of it to a different senseदूसरे ही ढंग से लगाना (अर्थ बदल देना)
bhavetis said to beहोता है
apalāpaḥ tu — now apalāpa; pūrva-uktasya — of what was said before; anyathā yojanam — the fitting to another sense; bhavet — is.
apalāpaḥ — अपलाप (लक्ष्य अलंकार); tu — परन्तु; pūrva-uktasya — पहले कहे हुए वाक्य का; anyathā yojanam — दूसरे ही ढंग से लगाना; bhavet — होता है।
Now apalāpa. It means taking something you said earlier and refitting it to a different meaning. You disown your own words by re-reading them.
अपलाप वह अलंकार है जिसमें पहले कहे हुए अपने ही वाक्य को फिर दूसरे ही ढंग से लगा दिया जाता है। 'तु' शब्द इसे पहले वाले अलंकार से अलग करता है।
apalāpa: literally 'denial, disavowal' — here, retracting one's own earlier statement by re-reading it. Defined in 11.91; the verse that follows (11.92) is its udāharaṇa.
अपलाप का शब्दार्थ है 'नकारना, मुकर जाना' — यहाँ अपने ही पहले कहे वचन को नये अर्थ में पढ़कर उससे पलट जाना। इसका लक्षण ११.९१ में है और आगे का श्लोक (११.९२) इसी का उदाहरण है।

phullojjvala-vana-mālaṁ
phulla-ujjvala-vana-mālaṁhim whose forest-garland is in full bloom and bright accusative, describing mādhavaṁ in the next line; a compound built for two readingsखिली हुई, उज्ज्वल वनमाला वाले (माधव को) — यही समास दो अर्थों में पढ़ा जा सकता है
phulla-ujjvala-vana-mālaṁ mādhavaṁ — Mādhava, whose forest-flower garland is blossoming and shining.
phulla-ujjvala-vana-mālaṁ — खिली हुई उज्ज्वल वनमाला वाले (अगली पंक्ति के mādhavaṁ का विशेषण)।
Kṛṣṇa, wearing his forest-flower garland all in bloom and bright. The very same syllables will be re-cut later as 'the one for whom the rows of woods stand blossoming and bright' — that is, the spring.
'खिली हुई, उज्ज्वल वनमाला वाले' — यह अगली पंक्ति के 'माधव' का विशेषण है। यह समास ही दो अर्थों के लिए गढ़ा गया है।
An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse, 11.92) of apalāpa defined in 11.91. Per Viśvanātha, the speaker is Rādhā — parted from Kṛṣṇa by a quarrel (kalahāntaritā) — speaking eagerly in private to her friend Viśākhā. The whole verse turns on a śleṣa: mādhava = Kṛṣṇa / the spring month, and vana-mālā = forest-garland / row of forests.

kāmayate kā na mādhavaṁ pramadā |
kā ... pramadāwhat young woman nominative subject, split around the verbकौन स्त्री (क्रिया के दोनों ओर बँटा हुआ कर्ता)
na kāmayatedoes not desireनहीं चाहती
mādhavaṁMādhava accusative object; the śleṣa word — also 'the spring'माधव को (श्लेष-शब्द — कृष्ण को अथवा वसन्त को)
kā pramadā — what young woman; mādhavaṁ — Mādhava; na kāmayate — does not desire?
kā ... pramadā — कौन स्त्री; na kāmayate — नहीं चाहती; mādhavaṁ — माधव को।
What young woman does not desire Mādhava? — meaning, every one of them does. Rādhā hides her own longing behind the general 'what woman wouldn't.'
कौन स्त्री माधव को नहीं चाहती? यहाँ 'माधव' श्लेष-शब्द है — इसका अर्थ कृष्ण भी है और वसन्त भी।

haraye spṛhayasi rādhe
harayefor Hari dative — spṛhayati governs the dative of what is longed forहरि की (स्पृहा का विषय — 'स्पृह' चतुर्थी लेता है)
spṛhayasiyou are longingतू चाह रखती है
rādheO Rādhā vocative — naming her to the pointहे राधे (नाम लेकर सीधे कहना)
rādhe — O Rādhā; haraye — for Hari; spṛhayasi — you long.
haraye — हरि की; spṛhayasi — तू चाह रखती है; rādhe — हे राधे।
'You're longing for Hari, Rādhā!' Lalitā, arriving suddenly, catches the hidden meaning and teases her by name.
हे राधे, तू हरि की चाह रखती है। यहाँ नाम लेकर सीधे उसी पर बात कही गई है।
Per Viśvanātha, this line is Lalitā's, who has just turned up unexpectedly and speaks teasingly (sopahāsam).
विश्वनाथ के अनुसार यह पंक्ति ललिता की है, जो अभी-अभी अचानक आ पहुँची है और हँसी-ठिठोली के साथ (सोपहास) कहती है।

nahi nahi vairiṇi vasantāya ||
nahi nahino, no! the doubled denial — the disowning itselfनहीं नहीं (दुहरा इनकार — यही मुकर जाना है)
vairiṇiO you enemy! vocative flung at Lalitāहे वैरिणी (ललिता पर फेंका गया सम्बोधन)
vasantāyafor the spring dative — the re-cut object; 'mādhava' is now sworn to mean the spring seasonवसन्त की (नया गढ़ा गया विषय — अब 'माधव' का अर्थ वसन्त ऋतु ठहराया गया)
vairiṇi — O enemy; nahi nahi — no, no; vasantāya — [I long] for spring.
nahi nahi — नहीं नहीं; vairiṇi — हे वैरिणी; vasantāya — वसन्त की।
'No, no, you spiteful thing! It is spring I long for.' Here is the apalāpa in action: Rādhā re-reads her own 'mādhava' as the spring season, not Kṛṣṇa. This is the śleṣa the figure lives on — mādhava = Kṛṣṇa / vasanta.
नहीं नहीं, हे वैरिणी! (मैं तो) वसन्त की (चाह रखती हूँ)। दुहरे इनकार से अपने ही वचन से मुकरकर 'माधव' का अर्थ अब वसन्त ऋतु कर दिया गया।

prathamaṁ svena eva uktasya pūrva-uktasya vākyasya — of a statement first said by oneself; punaḥ svena eva anyathā yojanam anyārtha-karaṇam — again by that same self, the fitting to another sense, the making-into-another-meaning; iti saṁlāpāt asau bhidyate — by this it differs from saṁlāpa.
pūrva-uktasya ... vākyasya — पहले कहे हुए वाक्य का; prathamaṁ svena eva uktasya — जो पहले स्वयं ही कहा गया था; punaḥ svena eva — फिर स्वयं ही; anyathā yojanam — दूसरे ढंग से लगाना; anyārtha-karaṇam iti — अर्थात् दूसरा अर्थ कर देना; saṁlāpāt asau bhidyate — संलाप से यह भिन्न है।
Viśvanātha unpacks the definition. First you say something yourself; then you yourself refit that same statement to another meaning. That 'by one's own self, both times' is exactly what separates apalāpa from saṁlāpa, where two different people trade words.
जो वाक्य पहले स्वयं ही कहा था, उसी को फिर स्वयं ही दूसरे ढंग से लगाना — अर्थात् उसका दूसरा अर्थ कर देना — यही अपलाप है। इसी कारण यह संलाप अलंकार से भिन्न है।
A technical distinction. In apalāpa one and the same speaker re-reads her own earlier words (Rādhā's 'mādhava' → spring). In saṁlāpa the words pass between two speakers in genuine exchange. The dividing mark is 'svena eva' — the same person does both the saying and the re-reading.
यह एक तकनीकी भेद है। अपलाप में एक ही बोलने वाली अपने ही पहले कहे वचन को नये अर्थ में पढ़ती है (राधा का 'माधव' → वसन्त)। संलाप में वे शब्द वास्तविक आदान-प्रदान में दो बोलने वालों के बीच चलते हैं। भेद का चिह्न 'स्वयं ही' है — कहना और फिर से पढ़ना, दोनों एक ही व्यक्ति करता है।

Now the same words are re-cut. 'Vana-mālā' is no longer Kṛṣṇa's flower-garland but 'the row of woods' (mālā = śreṇī); 'phullā, ujjvalā' now describe those woods; and Mādhava is the season for whom the forests stand blossoming and bright — the spring. This is the second reading the whole apalāpa turns on.

The śleṣa laid bare: mādhava = Kṛṣṇa or the spring month; vana-mālā = 'forest-garland' (a bahuvrīhi describing Kṛṣṇa) or 'row of forests' (with mālā = śreṇī, describing what blooms in spring). Same syllables, two parsings.
श्लेष खुलकर सामने: माधव = कृष्ण अथवा वसन्त मास; वनमाला = 'वन की माला' (कृष्ण का वर्णन करने वाला बहुव्रीहि) अथवा 'वनों की पंक्ति' (जहाँ 'माला' = श्रेणी, जो वसन्त में खिलती है)। एक ही अक्षर, दो अन्वय।
