cittasyaof the mindचित्त का
avikṛtiḥits staying unchanged, taking no alterationविकार का न होना, विकाररहित रहना
sattvaṁis what is called sattva (pure being)यही सत्त्व कहलाता है
vikṛteḥ kāraṇe satiwhen a cause of change is present locative absolute; vikṛteḥ gen.
vikṛteḥ kāraṇe sati — when a cause of change is present; cittasya — of the mind; avikṛtiḥ — the staying-unchanged; sattvaṁ — is sattva.
Sattva is this. Even when something is present that would normally stir the mind, the mind stays unmoved. That unshaken condition of the heart is what they call sattva.

tatra — within that sattva; ādyā vikriyā — the first stirring; bhāvaḥ — is bhāva; bījasya ādi-vikāra-vat — just like the first change of a seed.
Within that steady sattva, the very first stir of change that does arise — that is bhāva. It is like the first sprouting of a seed: the earliest visible sign that something has begun.

Jīva unpacks it. The 'change' here means bhāva starting to show. Even when its cause — bhāva's own arising — is right there, the mind still shows nothing on the outside; that outward blankness is called sattva. Then, once sattva is in place, the earliest stir — some faint first hint of showing — is what gets the name bhāva. And Jīva identifies the 'seed' of the verse as rati, love: bhāva is love's first sprout, its first visible change.

Viśvanātha heads off a doubt. Don't say, 'but the standard poeticians never analyzed sattva this way.' The old authorities did teach it — and to show that, Rūpa says 'tathā hi,' 'for so it has been said,' and quotes the Rasa-sudhākara.

Viśvanātha makes the cause concrete. Say a beautiful man comes into view — the usual trigger for the mind to stir. If even then the mind holds still, that stillness is sattva. And he specifies which sattva: the pure kind, with no trace of rajas or tamas — because pure sattva alone has a nature that simply does not get disturbed.

That first stir is bhāva. Viśvanātha fills out the seed-simile with concrete cases. Take a particular seed like the vāstūka herb: even when rain pours down — the obvious trigger for sprouting — it still does not sprout. Or gold, at the touch of frost. What the simile catches is the 'first change': the earliest transformation comes only from the fitting cause, not from the obvious one. Map it back — the heart is the seed; the ordinary trigger (a handsome man, rain) leaves it unmoved; the first true change, bhāva, comes only from its own proper cause, the sight of Kṛṣṇa.
vāstūka — a common pot-herb (Chenopodium, 'bathuā'); its seed is a stock example of one that germinates in its own (cold) season rather than with the monsoon rains.

And here is why it is fine. Transcendental realities can't be pointed to directly in this world. So poets reach for material images — the very same way they compare Śrī Kṛṣṇa himself to a raincloud. If comparing Kṛṣṇa to a cloud is acceptable, comparing bhāva to a seed is too.

An objection. Then this definition of sattva and bhāva won't cover ordinary literary heroines — a Damayantī in her moods of languor and the rest. Why is that welcome? Because rasa here is the rasa the Upaniṣad means — 'He is verily rasa; tasting rasa, one becomes blissful' — rasa that is directly a solid mass of consciousness and bliss. And you, Rūpa, and others built this whole unfolding of rasa by looking only at the transcendental beloveds of the Lord, the gopīs. It was never drawn from worldly heroines. So of course the definition passes them by.
Why cited: The Taittirīya śruti 'raso vai saḥ' is adduced to fix rasa as the transcendental cid-ānanda itself, grounding the point that Rūpa's whole rasa-analysis is built on the aprākṛta gopīs, not on material heroines.

And if deluded poets insist on stretching that transcendental rasa onto ordinary women — bodies of flesh, blood, dung and urine, bound for old age and death — well, what can we do about it? Their confusion is on them. To seal the point Viśvanātha cites the Bhāgavata's very first verse, read on its 'rasa' side: the Lord who taught brahma to Brahmā, the one about whom even the wise fall into confusion, where fire, water and earth get taken for one another.
Why cited: Bhāgavata 1.1.1 is adduced, in its rasa-side reading, to license the point that even the learned (sūrayaḥ) 'muhyanti' — fall into confusion — over rasa; the poets' misapplication of rasa to material women is just such a delusion.

ye — who; ādyasya rasyasya — about the original relishable (rasa); kavayaḥ kāvya-kṛtaḥ — the poets, the poem-makers; muhyanti — are deluded.
Viśvanātha reads the verse on its rasa side. The 'wise ones' who 'muhyanti' he takes as the poets, the poem-makers; and what they are deluded about is the ādya rasya — the original object of relish, rasa itself. This is the famous double meaning of the Bhāgavata's opening: the verse is a śleṣa, and here he pulls out precisely its rasa layer — poets losing their way over rasa.

bhrameṇa alakṣye api — through error, even onto what is not its proper locus; prākṛta-rasa-lakṣaṇasya saṅgamanāt — because the definition of material rasa is made to fit there.
Why exactly do they get deluded? Because, through sheer error, they fit the definition of material rasa even onto an object that is not its true home. Stretch the label 'rasa' onto the wrong thing, and you have exactly the confusion the verse names.

tejo-vāri itiis the phrase 'tejo-vāri…' — fire and water and earth getting interchanged points back to Bhāgavata 1.1.1's 'tejo-vāri-mṛdāṁ vinimayaḥ''तेजो-वारि' इत्यादि वाक्य
tatra — for that confusion; dṛṣṭāntaḥ — the illustration; tejo-vāri iti — is 'tejo-vāri…'.
And the verse supplies its own illustration of that confusion: 'tejo-vāri-mṛdāṁ vinimayaḥ' — the mutual mix-up of fire, water and earth. As in a mirage, where sunlight looks like water and one element is taken for another, the deluded take the material for the transcendental rasa. The mirage stands for the delusion; the swapped elements stand for material rasa versus real rasa; the swap itself is the poets' error.
