nimitta-saptamī carmaṇi dvīpinaṁ hanti itivat |
nimitta-saptamī[the locative here] is a locative of motive — 'on the occasion of', not 'in'यहाँ सप्तमी कारण/अवसर बताने वाली निमित्त-सप्तमी है
carmaṇi dvīpinaṁ hanti itivatjust as in 'he kills the leopard for its skin', where 'skin' stands in the locative to mean 'for the sake of'जैसे 'चर्म के लिए बाघ को मारता है' में (सप्तमी कारण बताती है)
nimitta-saptamī — the locative expresses the motive/occasion; carmaṇi dvīpinaṁ hanti itivat — exactly as in the maxim 'he kills the leopard for the sake of its skin'.
The locative in 'on the bhāva named rati' is a locative of motive — it marks occasion, not place. Compare the stock example 'he kills the leopard for its skin', where 'skin' takes the locative to mean 'for the sake of'.
nimitta-saptamī: a grammatical category, the locative used to express the cause or occasion of an act.

So, to bring the ujjvala rasa into being: the sthāyin here — known generally as 'rati', but in this book technically named 'madhurā' — is present. Yet gravity and shyness keep the girl's mind outwardly unmoved, showing nothing. In such a mind the very first stirring cannot be held back. It leaks out through a play of the eyes and the like — a slight betrayal of that inner rati. That is what 'comes forth into view'.

vikāraḥ mānasaḥ bhāvaḥ'a mental modification is [called] bhāva'मानसिक विकार 'भाव' है
anubhāvaḥ bhāva-bodhakaḥ'the anubhāva is what makes bhāva known''अनुभाव' वह है जो भाव का बोध कराता है
iti vibhāga-labdheḥbecause this very division is obtained [from that dictum] ablative of reason — 'since the division is on record'ऐसा विभाजन (प्रमाण में) उपलब्ध होने के कारण
'vikāraḥ mānasaḥ bhāvaḥ' — a mental modification is bhāva; 'anubhāvaḥ bhāva-bodhakaḥ' — anubhāva is its revealer; iti vibhāga-labdheḥ — since this very division is had [from the authoritative statement].
He backs this with the settled division of terms: 'a mental modification = bhāva; the anubhāva = what reveals that bhāva.' Since this division is on record, the verse's 'bhāva' can be placed on the revealer's side — an anubhāva, not the sthāyin or vyabhicārin.
Why cited: adduced as the standard division of terms — bhāva = the inner modification, anubhāva = its revealer — grounding the claim that the verse's 'bhāva' belongs to the anubhāva side, not the sthāyin or vyabhicārin.

Grammatically: here 'bhāva' is built with the ghañ suffix in the instrumental sense — 'that by which it is revealed' (bhāvyate = vyajyate anena). So 'bhāva' names the instrument of revealing — an anubhāva — not the inner emotion itself.
karaṇa-ghañ: the ghañ suffix read in the instrumental sense ('the means by which'), as against its more usual abstract-action sense.

bahiḥ vikārasya eva bhāva-bodhakatve sambhavātsince only an outward modification can serve to reveal bhāva ablative of reason; eva — 'only an outer one'क्योंकि केवल बाहरी विकार में ही भाव का बोध कराने की सम्भावना है

Objection: This bhāva is an inner modification of the mind. But an anubhāva, by definition, is something outward that reveals the inner bhāva — as the BRS says, 'anubhāvas make known the bhāvas that sit in the mind.' So how can an inner mental stir count as an anubhāva?
Why cited: quoted (Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu 2.1.1) to establish that anubhāvas are outward revealers of the inner bhāvas — the premise of the objection that a purely inner modification cannot be an anubhāva.

Here is the resolution, by analogy. The sāttvika-bhāvas — being stunned, sweating, and so on — spring from an inner condition, yet are still classed as anubhāvas. In the same way, bhāva, hāva, helā and the rest are inner and outer modifications at once, and so they too count as anubhāvas. The mapping: as the sāttvikas stand to their inner cause, so bhāva-hāva stand to the inner rati — each is inwardly felt and outwardly shown at the same moment, which is all it takes to be an anubhāva.

sarvathā citta-vikārasya eva vivakṣitatve — were only a mental modification intended; cittasya nirvikārasya iti ṣaṣṭhy-antaḥ eva prayujyate — the genitive 'cittasya nirvikārasya' would be employed.
The grammar proves it. Had Rūpa meant only a mental modification, he would have written the genitive 'of the unmodified mind (cittasya nirvikārasya)'. Instead he wrote the locative 'in the unmodified mind' — showing he means a change of both mind and body, not the mind alone.

By contrast, the author of the Alaṅkāra-kaustubha (kārikā 124) defines this very bhāva as a category separate from anubhāva. Viśvanātha records the divergence and does not harmonize it with his own reading, on which bhāva is a kind of anubhāva.

Alaṅkāra-kaustubha: a poetics work by Kavikarṇapūra. Its author classes bhāva apart from anubhāva — the opposite of the reading just given; the two are left standing side by side.

Objection: If bhāva is defined as this first-ever stir at the dawn of youth, then the triad bhāva-hāva-helā (hāva and helā being bhāva's further developments) could never occur in women already past that youthful threshold. But they plainly do.
bhāva, hāva, helā are the three sattva-born ornaments (sattvaja-alaṅkāra); hāva and helā are treated as successive developments of bhāva.

yad uktaṁ sāhitya-darpaṇa-kṛdbhiḥ api — as even the Sāhitya-darpaṇa's author states; 'janmataḥ prabhṛti nirvikāre manasi udbuddha-mātraḥ vikāraḥ bhāvaḥ' — in a mind unmodified since birth, a just-awakened modification is bhāva; iti eke — thus one school.
First view (eke): one school keeps the strict reading and backs it with the Sāhitya-darpaṇa — 'in a mind unmodified from birth onward, a modification barely awakened is bhāva.' On this view the age-restriction simply stands.
Why cited: quoted (Sāhitya-darpaṇa 3.105) in support of the first school's reading — that 'unmodified mind' means unmodified from birth, and bhāva is the just-awakened first modification within it.

Fourth view (apare) — essentially Jīva's line: a feeling cannot spring from sheer nothing, so 'unmodified' cannot mean 'empty of feeling'. It means the mind that gravity and shyness keep from showing anything outwardly. In such a mind the first stir, being too strong to hide, leaks out as a play of the eyes and betrays the feeling. That, they say, is bhāva.
Foregrounds the wordplay na hy abhāvād bhāvo jāyate — 'bhāva does not arise from abhāva': the pun on abhāva (non-being) / bhāva (feeling) does the argumentative work, forcing 'nirvikāra' to mean 'outwardly unexpressive', not 'without any inner feeling'.

Here is the settled reading. Kṛṣṇa is nirguṇa — beyond material qualities — so his own transcendental qualities are the one thing that can move the gopī's mind; no other person can. In that sense her mind is 'unmodified' (nirvikāra): unmovable by anyone but Kṛṣṇa. So when, on seeing Kṛṣṇa, the first slight change of mind and body arises — that alone is bhāva. On this reading 'unmodified' never meant 'pre-pubescent' or 'empty', so the age-restriction objection never arises.
The pivot turns on nirguṇa/nirvikāra: 'unmodified' is re-read not as childhood-emptiness but as immunity to every stimulus except Kṛṣṇa, whose qualities alone are transcendental (nirguṇa) — which is why they, and only they, can move the mind.
