valitaṁ vilocanāgre, śavalaṁ dhūlibhir idaṁ balāvaraja |
valitaṁhas come round, turned up [before us] past participle of √val, agreeing with idaṁ [gavalam]; Viśvanātha glosses it vyāpta, 'filling [the view]'वलित — अर्थात् व्याप्त, (दृष्टि को) भरता हुआ छाया हुआ (यह 'इदम्' = गवल का विशेषण है)
vilocanāgreright in front of the eyes locative; vilocana-agre, 'at the fore of the eyes'नेत्रों के आगे, आँखों के सामने
dhūlibhiḥwith dust — [grey] because of the dust on it instrumental (dhūlibhiḥ), of meansधूल के द्वारा, धूल से
balāvarajaO younger brother of Bala(rāma) — O Kṛṣṇa vocative; bala-avaraja, 'the one born after Bala'हे बल (बलराम) के अनुज!
balāvaraja — O younger brother of Balarāma; idaṁ [gavalam] — this [buffalo horn]; valitaṁ vilocanāgre — has come round right before [our] eyes; śavalaṁ dhūlibhiḥ — dappled grey with dust
O Kṛṣṇa, younger brother of Balarāma! This [buffalo horn] has come right before our eyes, gone grey and dappled with dust.
An udāharaṇa, in Uddhava's voice, illustrating śṛṅga — Kṛṣṇa's buffalo-horn bugle — as an uddīpana-vibhāva (an excitant of rasa); the lead-in names it, 'śṛṅgikā, yathā—'. The verse is a tour de force of anuprāsa: valitaṁ, śavalaṁ, balāvaraja, balavat, kuvalaya, gavalaṁ, kavalayati all ring the same va-la / la-va syllables.

Here Jīva fixes the word: 'gavala' means the horn of a wild forest buffalo.

upalakṣaṇaṁ caitat svaṅgādi-śṛṅgāṇām ||
upalakṣaṇaṁis a representative pointer (upalakṣaṇa) — one instance named to indicate a whole classउपलक्षण (केवल पहचान-चिह्न, सूचक मात्र)
svaṅgādi-śṛṅgāṇāmfor the horns beginning with his own [personal one] genitive; sva-aṅga-ādi-śṛṅgāṇām, the class the word stands in forअपने अंग आदि से बने सींग-वाद्यों का (जिनका यह उपलक्षण है)
ca — and; etat — this word 'gavala'; svaṅgādi-śṛṅgāṇām — for the horns beginning with his own; upalakṣaṇaṁ — is a representative pointer
And, Jīva adds, this word is an upalakṣaṇa: it names one buffalo horn but stands in for the whole class of horns, beginning with Kṛṣṇa's own personal horn. So the excitant is not this single buffalo horn alone — horns as such are what stir the gopīs.
upalakṣaṇa vs viśeṣaṇa. A viśeṣaṇa is a defining qualifier — 'the blue lotus,' where blueness is part of what the thing is. An upalakṣaṇa is a mere finder-mark — 'the house with the crow on it,' where the crow only helps you locate the house and is no part of it. 'Gavala' works the second way: naming this one wild-buffalo horn merely points you to the whole category of Kṛṣṇa's horn-excitants; the buffalo horn itself is not the essential thing.

Viśvanātha sets the scene. Uddhava has gone back from Vraja to Mathurā, and there Kṛṣṇa keeps asking him for news of his old horn, cane, and the like. In reply Uddhava speaks this verse. Then Viśvanātha glosses the words: 'valita' means vyāpta, filling the sight; 'gavala' is the buffalo horn; the 'lotus-eyed' gopīs, though in the nominative, are really the object being devoured; and 'kavalayati' is 'it devours.'

The point of 'dappled with dust,' says Viśvanātha, is this: because you stopped using it, the horn was set away up high in a place of honor. Yet, kept up there all this long time you have been gone, even so it has gathered dust. The grey coat marks how long you have been away.
