L1definition
kṛṣṇa-vaktrendu-niṣṭhyūtaṁ muralī-ninadāmṛtam |
kṛṣṇa-vaktrendu-niṣṭhyūtamspat forth from the moon that is Kṛṣṇa's face — describing the nectar named next rūpaka: vaktra imagined as an indu (face-as-moon); niṣṭhyūta 'spat out, exuded' keeps up the moon-drips-nectar conceit. Neuter, agreeing with amṛtam.
muralī-ninadāmṛtamthe nectar that is the sound of his flute — the subject of the verse a second rūpaka: the flute's ninada is itself the amṛta.
muralī-ninadāmṛtam — the nectar that is the sound of his flute; kṛṣṇa-vaktrendu-niṣṭhyūtam — spat forth from the moon that is Kṛṣṇa's face.
The sound of Kṛṣṇa's flute is a nectar. And it pours out from his face — which the poet calls a moon, because in poetry the moon drips nectar. So his moon-face spits forth the nectar of flute-song.
Two stacked metaphors (rūpaka): Kṛṣṇa's face is a moon, and the flute-sound is nectar. The link is the old poetic convention that the moon exudes amṛta — so the 'moon' of his face naturally 'spits forth' the nectar of the flute.
L2conclusion
uddīpanānāṁ sarveṣāṁ madhye pravaram īryate ||
uddīpanānāṁ sarveṣāmout of all the uddīpanas — everything that kindles the lovers' mood genitive plural, governed by madhye ('among').
madhyein the midst of, amongके बीच / के मध्य
pravaramthe foremost, the very best neuter, predicated of the flute-nectar (amṛtam) of L1.
īryateit is declared to be passive — 'is said, is proclaimed'; the treatise delivering its verdict.
sarveṣām uddīpanānām madhye — among all the excitants; pravaram — the foremost; īryate — it is declared to be.
Among all the uddīpanas — everything that kindles the lovers' rasa — this flute-nectar is declared the very best.
uddīpana (uddīpana-vibhāva): in rasa-theory an 'excitant,' something that inflames an emotion already present — the flute-sound, the season, the forest — as distinct from the ālambana, the person the mood rests on. This verse ranks the flute-sound the chief of them all.
