An udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) of bhūṣā, 'ornament,' one of the uddīpana-vibhāvas (excitants of rasa) treated in prakaraṇa 10; the lead-in reads 'bhūṣā, yathā—' ('ornament, for example'). Rādhā is complaining that Kṛṣṇa's ornaments inflame her.

O dear friend — after all, it is Kāma's own weapon, and Hari wears it as his crest.
हे प्रिय सखी! वह जो शेखर बनाया गया है, वस्तुतः कामदेव का अस्त्र है।
aṅgaja, 'born of the body,' is an epithet of Kāma, the god of love, whose arrows are flowers.
'अङ्गज' अर्थात् 'शरीर से उत्पन्न' — कामदेव का विशेषण, जिसके बाण पुष्प ही हैं।

But alas — how can that thing, which he has made into his crest-ornament, do this?
हाय! इस (कृष्ण) के द्वारा आभूषण बनाया गया यह — कैसे (मेरे हृदय को बींधता है)?

nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣaḥthe peacock feather śleṣa — literally 'peacock feather' (nīlakaṇṭha = peacock, pakṣa = feather); on the pun, 'the ally of blue-throated Rudra'मयूरपिच्छ (नीलकण्ठ = मोर, पक्ष = पंख); श्लेष में — नीलकण्ठ (रुद्र) का पक्ष अर्थात् सहायक
nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣaḥ — the peacock feather; mama hṛdi — into my heart; bidhyati — pierces
mama hṛdi — मेरे हृदय में; bidhyati — बींधता है; nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣaḥ — नीलकण्ठ-पक्ष (मयूरपिच्छ / रुद्र का सहायक)।
How does that peacock feather pierce my heart? This is the verse's turn: nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣa reads two ways at once — 'peacock feather' and 'the ally of blue-throated Rudra' — and the commentators build the wonder on the second.
यह नीलकण्ठ-पक्ष मेरे हृदय को बींध रहा है — ऊपरी अर्थ में मोर का पंख; और श्लेष से, नीलकण्ठ अर्थात् रुद्र का सहायक।
The whole verse pivots on this śleṣa. nīlakaṇṭha = 'blue-throated,' both the peacock and Rudra (Śiva); pakṣa = both 'feather' and 'ally.' Surface: a peacock feather pierces her. Pun: how does an ally of Rudra come to strike her on Kāma's behalf?
समूचा श्लोक इसी श्लेष पर घूमता है। नीलकण्ठ = 'नीले कण्ठ वाला' — मोर भी और रुद्र (शिव) भी; पक्ष = 'पंख' भी और 'सहायक' भी। सीधा अर्थ — मोर का पंख उसे बींधता है; श्लेष — रुद्र का सहायक भला कामदेव की ओर से उस पर प्रहार क्यों करे?

nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣo mayūra-piccham |
nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣaḥthe phrase nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣa'नीलकण्ठ-पक्ष' का अर्थ
mayūra-picchammeans a peacock feather (mayūra — peacock; piccha — tail-feather)मयूरपिच्छ (मोर का पंख)
nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣaḥ — the phrase nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣa; mayūra-piccham — [is] a peacock feather
nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣaḥ — नीलकण्ठ-पक्ष; mayūra-piccham — मयूरपिच्छ।
Jīva first gives the plain surface sense: nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣa is just a peacock feather — the plume Kṛṣṇa wears.
'नीलकण्ठ-पक्ष' अर्थात् मयूरपिच्छ।

nīlakaṇṭhaḥ — Nīlakaṇṭha; rudraḥ — is Rudra; aṅgaja-vidveṣitvena prasiddhasya tasya — of him, famous as Kāma's enemy; pakṣaḥ sahāyaḥ api — his ally, even; iti arthaḥ — that is the meaning
nīlakaṇṭhaḥ rudraḥ — नीलकण्ठ अर्थात् रुद्र; aṅgaja-vidveṣitvena prasiddhasya — कामदेव के द्वेषी रूप में प्रसिद्ध उसका; tasya pakṣaḥ sahāyaḥ — उसका पक्ष अर्थात् सहायक; api — भी; iti arthaḥ — ऐसा अर्थ है।
Now the second reading. nīlakaṇṭha is also Rudra, and Rudra is famous as Kāma's sworn enemy — the one who burned him to ashes. So nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣa reads 'even the ally of Rudra.' On Jīva's take the wonder is: how does something on the side of Kāma's own enemy end up striking me on Kāma's behalf?
नीलकण्ठ अर्थात् रुद्र, जो कामदेव के द्वेषी रूप में प्रसिद्ध है; उसका 'पक्ष' अर्थात् सहायक भी — ऐसा (श्लेष का) अर्थ है।

śrī-rādhā — श्रीराधा; lalitām — ललिता से; āha — कहती हैं; praharatu iti — 'प्रहरतु' इत्यादि।
Viśvanātha sets the scene: Śrī Rādhā is speaking to Lalitā. So he identifies the verse's 'dear friend' as Lalitā, and cites the opening word praharatu to mark which verse he is glossing.
श्रीराधा ललिता से कहती हैं — 'प्रहरतु' इत्यादि श्लोक।

He backs the gloss with the dictionary: the Amara-kośa lists āpīḍa and śekhara as words for a crest-ornament worn in the hair.
शिखा पर धारण किए जाने वाले आभूषण के लिए 'आपीड' और 'शेखर' — ये दो शब्द हैं, ऐसा अमरकोश में है।
Why cited: lexical proof that śekhara denotes a crest-ornament, grounding the gloss of śekharita
क्यों उद्धृत: यह शब्दप्रमाण दिखाता है कि 'शेखर' का अर्थ शिरोभूषण होता है, जिससे 'शेखरित' का अर्थ पुष्ट हो जाता है।

Viśvanātha builds the argument in two halves. First half: the kadamba flower is Kāma's weapon, Kāma's arrows are flowers, and I am forever Kāma's target — so 'let it strike' is perfectly fitting; no wonder there. Second half: but nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣa, on the pun, is the ally of Rudra — and Rudra too is famous as forever being Kāma's target. So how does an ally of that very Rudra come to pierce my heart? That is the astonishment.

He licenses the pun with a second dictionary: the Medinī-kośa says pakṣa can mean 'friend' or 'ally' — which is what lets nīlakaṇṭha-pakṣa read 'the ally of Rudra.'
'पक्ष' शब्द 'सखा' और 'सहायक' — इन दोनों अर्थों में आता है, ऐसा मेदिनीकोश में है।
Why cited: lexical proof that pakṣa means friend/ally, authorizing the punned reading 'ally of Rudra'
