yā madhyastha-padena saṅkulatarā śuddhā prakṛtyā jaḍā
she who — the one about to be described (Candrāvalī, named in L3) relative yā answered by sā api in L4जो (स्त्री.)
madhyastha-padenaby the mark set in her middle — or: by her middle, neutral stance instrumental; śleṣa — the moon's central spot / the neutral one's resolve (vyavasāya)मध्यस्थ (तटस्थ) के पद अर्थात् व्यवसाय के कारण — श्लेष: चन्द्रमा के मध्य-कलंक के द्वारा
saṅkulatarāis thickly filled — wholly furnished with itअत्यन्त व्याप्त (भरी हुई)
śuddhā'pure' — that is, plain, unseasoned; and, of the moon, whiteशुद्ध (श्वेत / निर्मल)
prakṛtyāby her very nature instrumental of mannerस्वभाव से
jaḍādull, thick — and, of the moon, coldजड़ (शीतल / निर्बुद्धि)
— she who; madhyastha-padena — by the mark/stance in her middle; saṅkulatarā — is thickly filled; śuddhā — pure/white; prakṛtyā — by nature; jaḍā — dull/cold.
"She who is thickly marked by the spot in her middle, 'pure,' by nature dull..." Every word runs two ways at once. Of Candrāvalī the rival gopī: 'the mark in the middle' is her neutral, aloof stance, 'pure' means empty of love's flavor, 'dull' means witless in love. Of the moon (candrāvalī = the row of moons): the central spot is the lunar stain, 'pure' is white, 'dull' is cold. Hold the sentence open — the subject 'she' is answered only in L3-L4.
An udāharaṇa (lead-in yathā—), spoken by Śrī Rādhā — so both included commentators, Jīva and Viśvanātha — in the Hari-vallabhā chapter (prakaraṇa 9). The whole verse is a double-entendre (śleṣa): every epithet fits both Candrāvalī the rival gopī and candrāvalī = candra-śreṇī, the row of moons of the twelve months. Rādhā uses it to teach a friend that even a lowly rival can rouse a spark of Kṛṣṇa's longing — so jealousy is only to be expected.

"...skilled at closing the lotus of her cleverness, exulting amid her other faults." Of the moon: its light shuts the day-lotus, and it shines within the night ('doṣā'). Of Candrāvalī: her cleverness folds shut like a lotus, and she takes inward delight even in her faults.
vaidagdhī (cleverness) is pictured as a nalinī (day-lotus) by rūpaka (metaphor). doṣā carries the śleṣa: as a common noun 'fault,' as a special word 'night.'

"...here, Candrāvalī is fit to produce a spark of Hari's longing." Of the gopī: even Candrāvalī can rouse a flicker of Kṛṣṇa's desire. Of the moon: the moon(-row) is fit to make the eastern quarter light up — 'Hari' as Indra, 'āśā' as the direction, 'sphuraṇa' as its glow at moonrise.
candrāvalī is the hinge of the śleṣa: the proper name of the rival gopī, and candra-śreṇī, 'the row/succession of moons.'

"Weighing the thought 'even she might manage it' — O friend, what person on earth could bear it?" A rhetorical question: no one could. The rival is contemptible, yet even she can stir Kṛṣṇa's longing — and that thought is unbearable to anyone. So (as Viśvanātha draws out) jealousy is natural; Rādhā is not to be singled out for blame.

Jīva, gopī reading: 'madhyastha' means the neutral, aloof one, and 'pada' means her fixed stance. So Candrāvalī's very excess of formal respect toward Kṛṣṇa gets read as cool indifference — and she is 'thickly filled' with it, wholly given over to it.

In the gopī reading, 'madhyastha-pada' is the neutral one's fixed stance. Through it, Candrāvalī's very excess of respect toward Kṛṣṇa shows up as coolness — the same point Jīva made.

For the moon, she is aśuddhā — not perfectly bright — because of the kalaṅka, the spot lodged in her middle.
The verse's word is śuddhā ('pure/white'); for the moon Viśvanātha brings out its reverse — aśuddhā, 'not clear' — since the moon in fact bears a spot. The gopī reading (next segment) keeps śuddhā.

In the gopī reading, 'śuddhā' turns on a maxim: 'love's way is crooked by nature, like a snake's motion.' So Candrāvalī is 'pure' only in the sense of being straight — empty of that inborn crookedness that real love requires. Straightness here is a defect, not a virtue.
Why cited: a maxim that true love is naturally crooked, adduced so that calling Candrāvalī 'straight/pure' names precisely what she lacks.

In this reading, cleverness itself is the lotus that delights the Kṛṣṇa-bee. When that lotus shuts — when her cleverness fails — it becomes 'doṣā,' night; and she is one whose nature is to shine only inside that night, never by day. So 'doṣāntarollāsinī' means: she glows only in the dark of her lost cleverness.

Rādhā closes: "Leave Candrāvalī aside. Even if, as the jilted one, I feel jealousy at Kṛṣṇa himself, her companion — that too is not out of place." Then an analogy: a host labors to feed someone, gathering ever choicer, tastier dishes and setting them out again and again; if that person instead spends his time elsewhere on flat, flavorless food and only then comes home — should one be angry at him or not? Decide that yourself and tell me. In the analogy the eager host is Rādhā and her party offering Kṛṣṇa the finest love; the one being fed is Kṛṣṇa; the insipid fare eaten elsewhere is his time with Candrāvalī, poor in rasa; the question of anger is whether Rādhā's jealousy at Kṛṣṇa is justified. It is offered in her own support: such jealousy is only natural, hence blameless — it is not a claim that Kṛṣṇa truly does wrong. In this way Rādhā taught her friend the truth of love.
