vakroktiḥspoken as vakrokti, a crooked, ironic turn of phraseवक्रोक्ति (व्यंग्य) है
apūrva-rasikāḥ iti — 'apūrva-rasikāḥ'; adbhuta-rasikāḥ iti — [surface sense] 'wondrous connoisseurs'; vakroktiḥ — said ironically.
Viśvanātha: on the surface 'apūrva' means adbhuta, wondrous — so 'wondrous connoisseurs.' But it is vakrokti, a twisted, sarcastic way of speaking. The praise is not meant straight.
vakrokti = 'crooked speech,' irony or innuendo: the literal compliment carries the opposite intent.

śleṣeṇa ca — and by the pun; a-kāraḥ pūrve yeṣām — those who have the syllable 'a' placed before [rasika]; arasikāḥ iti arthaḥ — the sense is 'arasikāḥ,' tasteless.
And by the pun: 'a-pūrva' is read as 'the ones with an a in front.' Put that 'a' onto 'rasika' and you get a-rasika. So the real meaning is: these people are arasikāḥ, with no taste for rasa at all.
This spells out the śleṣa the verse turns on — apūrva ('wonderful') re-split as a-pūrva ('having a before'), converting rasika into arasika.

The couplet finishes: '...how could Mukunda ever show himself in that mind?' So the objection: hatred and the rest are declared hostile to bhakti even for beginners on the path. How, then, could they possibly be favorable to the mature prema of the perfected gopīs? It looks like a flat contradiction.

The granting 'satyam' signals the objection was offered in good faith and is well taken; the reply that follows refines it rather than knocking it down.

Here is the distinction. While you are still a practitioner, attachment, hatred and the rest are ordinary, material ripples of the mind, and yes, they fight against bhakti. But in the perfected state the inner faculty has itself turned into prema. So its ripples too — grief, delusion, attachment, hatred — now carry the very shape of prema and are not different from prema at all. Same-named feelings, wholly different substance.

A further argument. If prema were something material, then the teaching found all through scripture — that Bhagavān himself is governed by prema, won over by his devotees' love — would be flatly contradicted. For the transcendent Lord cannot be ruled by anything material.

And scripture says: 'Hari is nirguṇa, the direct Supreme Person, beyond material nature.' But how do the mind's own functions become made of prema? Suppose you answer: 'by the relation of vessel and contents — bhakti sits in the inner faculty, so the faculty's functions take on its nature.' Then look at raw beginners, who have not developed rati and have only the barest whiff of started worship. Their inner faculty already houses bhakti too. So their functions should also be prema-like — yet their attachment and hatred plainly work against bhakti. The vessel-and-contents answer fails. 'True,' Viśvanātha grants.
ajāta-rati = a devotee in whom rati (the first sprout of prema) has not yet arisen; ārabdha-bhajana-gandha = one with only the faint 'scent' of worship just begun. The objection uses such beginners to break the mere container-contained explanation.

Here is how the fusion works. Bhakti's merely entering the ear does not fuse it with the mind on the spot. Only by practicing bhakti with the inner faculty over and over, without a break, climbing the ladder — clearing of anarthas, then steadiness (niṣṭhā), then taste (ruci), then attachment (āsakti) — does the fusion finally come. And until it does, the mind's ripples, attachment and hatred, stay material and genuinely do harm. So in beginners they are still obstacles — which is why the vessel-contents answer was wrong.
The ladder — anartha-nivṛtti, niṣṭhā, ruci, āsakti (leading on to bhāva and prema) — is Rūpa's standard sequence of bhakti's stages (BRS 1.4.15–16). The fusion (melana) of mind and bhakti comes only near the top of it.

An example from alchemy. Drop mercury (pārada) into powdered sulphur (gandhaka) and it does not merge just by contact. Only by grinding the two together, again and again, over a long time, do they truly combine. The mapping: mercury is bhakti entering; sulphur is the mind; the grinding is sustained practice; the slow merging is the melana that turns the mind spiritual.
rasa-śāstra (Indian alchemy): pārada = mercury, gandhaka = sulphur; their triturated black amalgam is kajjalī. Viśvanātha borrows the process as a dṛṣṭānta for how bhakti fuses with and transmutes the mind.

Now the full picture. Mercury and sulphur ground into one become kajjalī; bhakti and the inner faculty ground into one become prema. And here is the finer point. Mercury sticks to nothing on its own; yet it takes hold of sulphur — which carries Pārvatī's love hidden in it — and by grinding transforms the sulphur into another form, while mercury itself is never destroyed. Just by coloring that sulphur, through a special ripening, mercury comes to wear a wholly new name and form of its own. In the very same way, Bhagavān — present as hearing and chanting, entering through the ears — though touched by nothing anywhere else, enters the loving heart, and by his own power and his own 'grinding' turns that heart into pure consciousness. Colored by it, one with it, ripening it higher and higher, he comes to wear the distinct names and forms prema, then sneha, then praṇaya, and onward. So the mind is transmuted, and prema is the Lord himself fused with the heart under new names.
The alchemy is precise: pārada (mercury, linked with Śiva) grinds gandhaka (sulphur, said to hold Pārvatī/Gaurī's essence) into kajjalī without being itself consumed. Mapping: mercury = Bhagavān as śravaṇa-kīrtana; sulphur = the loving heart; kajjalī = prema; the graded ripening = the ascending names prema → sneha → praṇaya → (rāga, anurāga, bhāva, mahābhāva).

guru-bhāva here = the elder/parental stance, i.e. vātsalya; the four listed moods yield the four principal rasas — dāsya, sakhya, vātsalya, madhura.

evaṁ ca — and thus; sādhana-siddhānām api premā — even the prema of the sādhana-siddhas; yadi atādṛśatvena nirūpitaḥ — if shown to be non-mundane; tadā nitya-siddhānām nitya-siddhe eva premaṇi kaḥ sandehaḥ — then what doubt about the eternally-perfect prema of the nitya-siddhas?
The conclusion. If even the prema of devotees perfected through practice is shown to be non-material, then about the eternally perfect prema of the eternally perfect gopīs — the nitya-siddhas — what doubt could remain? Their dveṣa and the rest are surely nirguṇa, waves of that pure prema.
sādhana-siddha = one perfected by disciplined practice; nitya-siddha = eternally perfect (the gopīs, never bound). The argument runs a fortiori: if even the former's prema is transcendental, the latter's certainly is.

With the digression on prema's transcendental nature finished, Viśvanātha says: now let us get back to the matter at hand — the verse itself.
s28objection

nanu astuwell then, let it be granted nanu astu: conceding, only to press a further point'ननु, माना' — (आगे और बात कहने के लिए स्वीकार कर)
hari-priya-jane siddhein the perfected ones dear to Hari — the siddha gopīs locative: 'in their case'सिद्ध हरि-प्रियजन के विषय में
dveṣādīnām anaucitya-abhāvaḥthat there is no impropriety in dveṣa and the restद्वेष आदि के अनौचित्य का अभाव (है)
nanu astu — well, grant it; hari-priya-jane siddhe — in the perfected gopīs dear to Hari; dveṣādīnām anaucitya-abhāvaḥ — that hatred and the rest carry no impropriety.
A closing turn: all right, grant that in the perfected gopīs, the beloveds of Hari, there is nothing improper about hatred and the rest — it is all nirguṇa prema. Viśvanātha lays down this concession in order to press the next question, which the following verse takes up.
This 'nanv astu' grants the point just won (no impropriety of dveṣa in the siddha gopīs) and forms the bridge to the next verse's problem; the objection it opens is left suspended here.
