spaṣṭaṁ svotkṛṣṭatākhyānam auddhatyam iti kīrtyate ||
spaṣṭaṁopenly, in plain words — out loud, not hinted adverb governing ākhyānam; Viśvanātha will read it as abhidhā (direct statement), not vyañjanā (suggestion)खुलकर, अभिधा (साक्षात् वचन) से
sva-utkṛṣṭatā-ākhyānamthe declaring of one's own superiorityअपनी उत्कृष्टता का कथन
auddhatyam iti[this] as auddhatya, insolence'औद्धत्य' (उद्दंडता) इस नाम से
kīrtyateis proclaimed to beकहा जाता है
sva-utkṛṣṭatā-ākhyānam — the declaring of one's own superiority; spaṣṭaṁ — done openly, in plain words; auddhatyam iti kīrtyate — is proclaimed to be auddhatya.
spaṣṭaṁ — खुलकर, अभिधा से; sva-utkṛṣṭatā-ākhyānam — अपनी उत्कृष्टता का कथन; auddhatyam iti — 'औद्धत्य' इस नाम से; kīrtyate — कहा जाता है।
Now auddhatya, insolence. To declare one's own superiority openly, in plain words — that is what is called auddhatya. The stress falls on 'openly': it is said out loud, not merely hinted.
अपनी श्रेष्ठता को खुलकर घोषित करना 'औद्धत्य' कहलाता है। यह घोषणा अभिधा से सीधे कही जाती है, केवल संकेत से नहीं।

kaḥ tāvat — भला कौन है (उत्तर—कोई नहीं); vraja-maṇḍale — व्रजमण्डल में; saḥ valate — वह विद्यमान हो; gāndharvikā — गान्धर्विका (राधा) से; spardhatāṁ — स्पर्धा कर सके।
Lalitā throws down the challenge. In the whole circle of Vraja, who is there — who is even strong enough — for Gāndharvikā, Rādhā, to compete with on equal terms? The 'might contend' is only supposed, not real: there is no such rival.
व्रजमण्डल में भला ऐसा कौन है जो गान्धर्विका से स्पर्धा कर सके? कोई नहीं।
An udāharaṇa — an illustrative verse — of auddhatya, 'insolence, the open declaring of one's own side's supremacy,' defined just above in 9.32. Spoken by Lalitā, Rādhā's friend, indignantly proclaiming Rādhā to be beyond all rivalry.
यह ऊपर 9.32 में परिभाषित 'औद्धत्य'—अपने पक्ष की श्रेष्ठता का खुला उद्घोष—का उदाहरण-श्लोक है। इसे राधा की सखी ललिता कहती हैं, जो क्षुब्ध होकर राधा को समस्त स्पर्धा से परे बताती हैं।

na tu vyañjanayāand not by suggestion tu marks the contrast — denotation, not hintingपरन्तु व्यंजना (ध्वनि) से नहीं
iti arthaḥ— that is the meaningऐसा अर्थ है
spaṣṭam iti — the word 'openly'; abhidhayā eva — by plain denotation alone; na tu vyañjanayā — not by suggestion; iti arthaḥ — that is the sense.
spaṣṭam iti — 'स्पष्ट' यह पद; abhidhayā eva — अभिधा से ही; na tu vyañjanayā — न कि व्यंजना से; iti arthaḥ — ऐसा अर्थ है।
Viśvanātha fixes what 'openly' does in the definition. Auddhatya declares one's superiority by abhidhā, a word's plain naming-power, said straight out — not by vyañjanā, by hinting it. That is why the definition insists on 'openly'.
'स्पष्ट' पद का तात्पर्य—यह अभिधा से ही (कहा जाता है), न कि व्यंजना से।
abhidhā and vyañjanā are the poeticians' terms (alaṅkāra-śāstra): abhidhā is a word's literal power to name its object directly; vyañjanā is its further power to suggest an unstated sense. Here: insolence must state its claim of superiority out loud, by direct denotation — not merely imply it. That is the force of 'spaṣṭam'.

Padmā finishes her boast: 'And she, Rādhā — we reckon her a mere star.' Now Lalitā, Rādhā's friend, had been standing unnoticed behind the vines and heard every word. At once she stepped out into the open and, hot with indignation, said it straight out — the verse 'kas tāvat'. That stepping-forward and speaking-aloud is the very 'openly' the definition named.
(पद्मा का कथन—) 'वह तो हमारे द्वारा एक तारा-मात्र गिनी जाती है'—पद्मा के इस वचन को, लता की ओट में बिलकुल अलक्षित रहती हुई ललिता ने सुना और उसी क्षण प्रकट होकर आवेश के साथ स्पष्ट रूप से बोलीं—'कस्तावत्' इत्यादि।
Foreground the śleṣa: Candrāvalī's name carries candra, the moon; Padmā demotes Rādhā to a tārā, a lesser star beside that moon. It is this moon-over-star belittling that provokes Lalitā's open retort.
श्लेष को उभारें—चन्द्रावली के नाम में 'चन्द्र' (चन्द्रमा) निहित है; पद्मा राधा को उस चन्द्रमा के आगे एक तुच्छ 'तारा' बना देती है। इसी चन्द्रमा-पर-तारे वाले अपमान से ललिता का खुला प्रत्युत्तर भड़क उठता है।

spardhatām iti — the form 'spardhatām'; sambhāvanāyāṁ loṭ — is an imperative used in the sense of supposition.
spardhatām iti — 'स्पर्धताम्' यह पद; sambhāvanāyāṁ — सम्भावना के अर्थ में; loṭ — लोट् लकार।
A grammar note. 'Spardhatām' looks like a command, but here the imperative (loṭ) is used for supposition. So it is not 'let her compete!' but 'with whom could she even possibly compete?' — which sharpens the rhetorical question.
'स्पर्धताम्' में लोट् लकार सम्भावना के अर्थ में है ('कर सके', न कि 'करे')।

'जगती में जंघाल अति वेगवान् को कहते हैं'—ऐसा अमरकोश का वचन है।
