Viśvanātha sets the stage. One day, in the assembly of the young gopīs, Nāndīmukhī was telling a purāṇa story. As they listened, Lalitā and her friends had eyes rolling heavy with drowsiness — worn out from a sleepless night. Padmā saw this and laughed at them. It was to that laughing Padmā that Lalitā herself made her reply: 'vidmaḥ…'.
The drowsy, rolling eyes (ghūrṇitākṣī) are the hook the whole verse turns on: Lalitā's side is sleepy by day precisely because they are kept awake by night — which the veiled praise will reframe as their glory, not their shame.

Here is Lalitā's meaning, in Viśvanātha's words: 'Whatever merit you earned in a past life, we never earned any such thing.' Read flat, it hands Padmā the crown of the fortunate. The sting is held back for the lines that follow.

Viśvanātha closes the reasoning. 'The karma-tree' means a tree of our own past karma — and it has now borne fruit. He drives it home with a mock question: otherwise, how could such 'misery' ever arise — that on full-moon nights we are held in another's power, lying sleepless in dark caves and mountain hollows? And by day, worn out by the drowsiness that follows, we cannot even claim the small luck of hearing a holy tale! So, through veiled praise (vyāja-stuti), two things are signalled in one breath: for her own side, union brought about by Śrī Kṛṣṇa himself; for the rival side, the plain absence of it. The 'complaint' is the boast; the 'praise' is the taunt. Being kept awake by another (parādhīna) is not the misfortune it pretends to be — it is Kṛṣṇa's own doing, and therein lies the darpa.
