L1definition
ahaṅkāraḥ parākṣepaḥ svapakṣa-guṇa-varṇanāt ||
ahaṅkāraḥpride, self-assertion — [is defined as]अहंकार (गर्व) यह है
para-ākṣepaḥrunning the rival side down, disparaging the other partyजो प्रतिपक्ष पर आक्षेप करता है, दूसरे पक्ष को नीचा दिखाता है
sva-pakṣa-guṇa-varṇanātby extolling the virtues of one's own side ablative of means — the put-down is worked precisely through the praiseअपने पक्ष के गुणों का वर्णन करने के द्वारा (उसी वर्णन से यह तिरस्कार सधता है)
ahaṅkāraḥ — pride is; para-ākṣepaḥ — a disparaging of the rival; sva-pakṣa-guṇa-varṇanāt — [worked] by praising the merits of one's own side.
ahaṅkāraḥ — अहंकार; para-ākṣepaḥ — प्रतिपक्ष पर आक्षेप; sva-pakṣa-guṇa-varṇanāt — अपने पक्ष के गुणों के वर्णन के द्वारा।
This is the lakṣaṇa (definition). ahaṅkāra (pride) is putting the rival side down — but indirectly, by praising the good qualities of your own side. You never attack the rival outright; you exalt your own and let the rival shrink by comparison.
अहंकार क्या है? जब कोई अपने पक्ष (अपनी नायिका) के गुणों का वर्णन करते हुए ही दूसरे पक्ष को नीचा दिखाता है, वही अहंकार कहलाता है।

ākāśe ruci-lavam indra-nīla-śobhe
ākāśein the sky — and, by the pun, in Kṛṣṇa locative; the whole verse is a śleṣa — surface reading = sky, hidden reading = Kṛṣṇa (ā-kāśa, 'that which shines fully')आकाश में (ऊपरी अर्थ — आकाश; गूढ़ अर्थ — कृष्ण, जो 'पूर्णतया प्रकाशित होता है')
indra-nīla-śobhewhich has the beauty of sapphire (indra-nīla = the dark-blue gem) locative, agreeing with ākāśe — the blue-black sky, and beneath it Kṛṣṇa's own sapphire-dark bodyइन्द्रनीलमणि-सी शोभावाले (उस आकाश में) — नील-श्याम आकाश, और उसके नीचे कृष्ण का इन्द्रनील-सा श्याम शरीर
ruci-lavama mere scrap of luster (ruci = sheen, lava = a trifling bit) accusative object of janayati in L3; 'lava' belittles — it is only a traceकान्ति का लेशमात्र — केवल एक अंश ('लव' शब्द उसे तुच्छ ठहराता है)
ākāśe — in the sapphire-beautied sky; indra-nīla-śobhe — [that same sky]; ruci-lavam — a mere scrap of luster [is what the moonlight produces].
ākāśe — आकाश में; indra-nīla-śobhe — इन्द्रनील-सी शोभावाले; ruci-lavam — कान्ति के लेशमात्र को।
Now the udāharaṇa (illustrative verse) begins. On the surface: in the dark-blue sapphire sky, the moonlight makes only a tiny bit of glow. But every word puns. 'ākāśa' also decodes as Kṛṣṇa (the one who shines completely), 'indra-nīla' is Kṛṣṇa's sapphire-dark complexion, and 'a mere scrap of luster' is the belittling word — the rival's radiance is only a trace.
इन्द्रनीलमणि-सी शोभावाले आकाश में केवल थोड़ी-सी कान्ति — यही वह वस्तु है जिसे सोम की आभा उत्पन्न करती है (क्रिया अगली पंक्ति में)।
The udāharaṇa (illustrative verse, 9.22) for ahaṅkāra ('pride'), the quality defined in the previous line (9.21). Lalitā, of Rādhā's party, disparages the rival Candrāvalī by exalting Rādhā. The whole verse runs on a śleṣa: an astronomical surface (sky, moonlight, the rising sun of the month Jyeṣṭha) and, beneath it, Kṛṣṇa, Candrāvalī, and Rādhā.

somābhā janayati tāvad-asphuṭa-śrīḥ |
somā-bhāthe moon's radiance (soma = moon) — the subject nominative; puns on Candrāvalī, whose name means 'string of moons'सोम (चन्द्रमा) की आभा — चाँदनी (चन्द्रावली, अर्थात् 'चन्द्रों की माला', पर श्लेष)
janayatiproduces, gives rise to [that scrap of luster]उत्पन्न करती है
tāvat-asphuṭa-śrīḥshe whose splendor is, until then, unmanifest (tāvat = until then, asphuṭa = not shown, śrī = splendor) bahuvrīhi in the nominative, describing somābhā — her beauty simply does not showजिसकी अपनी शोभा तब तक अप्रकट रहती है (ऐसी वह)
somābhā — the moonlight, tāvat-asphuṭa-śrīḥ — whose splendor is until-then unmanifest; janayati — produces [only that scrap of luster in the sapphire sky].
somā-bhā — सोम की आभा; janayati — उत्पन्न करती है; tāvat-asphuṭa-śrīḥ — जिसकी शोभा तब तक अप्रकट है (ऐसी वह)।
The moonlight — whose own beauty stays dim and unshown — manages to produce only that scrap of glow in the sky. Under the pun: Candrāvalī, whose real splendor never comes out, musters only a trace of charm in Kṛṣṇa. The phrase 'asphuṭa-śrī' will be the hinge the commentators fight over.
सोम की आभा — जिसकी अपनी शोभा तब तक अप्रकट रहती है — केवल उतनी-सी कान्ति उत्पन्न करती है।

netrāṇāṁof the eyes genitive — whose darkness is removedनेत्रों का (जिनका अन्धकार हरा जाता है)
timira-harāremoving the darkness (timira = gloom, harā = carrying off) feminine, describing the light/radiance — it clears the eyes' darkनेत्रों का तिमिर (अन्धकार) हरनेवाली (वह दीप्ति)
vareṇya-dīptiḥa choice, excellent radiance (vareṇya = to be prized, dīpti = shining)वरणीय, श्रेष्ठ दीप्ति
netrāṇāṁ — of the eyes; timira-harā — clearing away the darkness; vareṇya-dīptiḥ — [that moonlight is] a light worth prizing.
netrāṇāṁ — नेत्रों का; timira-harā — तिमिर हरनेवाली; vareṇya-dīptiḥ — वरणीय दीप्ति।
This moonlight is, granted, a light worth having — it lifts the darkness from people's eyes. The concession is part of the strategy: praise the moon just enough, so the crushing 'but only until...' of the next line lands harder.
नेत्रों के अन्धकार को हरनेवाली वह वरणीय दीप्ति...

sā yāvan na hi vṛṣabhānujābhyudeti ||
she — [i.e. the vṛṣabhānujā] nominative subject of abhyudetiवह (चाँदनी/सोमा)
yāvat na hionly just so long as ... does not (yāvat = as long as, na = not, hi = indeed) the whole clause is a time-limit clamped on janayati above — the moon glows only up to this pointजब तक कि नहीं (चाँदनी केवल इसी सीमा तक चमकती है)
vṛṣabhānu-jāthe sun born of Vṛṣa=Jyeṣṭha (vṛṣa = the month Jyeṣṭha, jā = born of) — and, by the pun, Rādhā, daughter of Vṛṣabhānu the verse's headline śleṣa: astronomically the Jyeṣṭha sun; secretly Vṛṣabhānu's daughter, Rādhāवृषभानुजा (ज्योतिष-पक्ष में ज्येष्ठ का सूर्य; गूढ़ पक्ष में वृषभानु की पुत्री राधा)
abhyudetirises up (abhi-ud-√i)उदित होती है
— she; vṛṣabhānujā — the Jyeṣṭha-sun / Rādhā; yāvat na hi ... abhyudeti — only just so long as she has not yet risen [does the moon make its scrap of glow].
— वह; yāvat na hi — जब तक कि नहीं; vṛṣabhānu-jā — वृषभानुजा; abhyudeti — उदित होती है।
And here is the whole point: the moonlight puts on its little show only until she rises. On the surface 'she' is the blazing summer sun of the month Jyeṣṭha, before which moonlight vanishes. Beneath it, 'vṛṣabhānujā' is Rādhā, Vṛṣabhānu's daughter — the moment she appears, Candrāvalī's trace of charm is gone. That is the prideful sting: Lalitā never insults Candrāvalī; she just names Rādhā's rising.
वह (चाँदनी) केवल तभी तक यह करती है, जब तक कि वृषभानुजा उदित नहीं होती।

yataḥ sā — she from whom; na vidyate sphuṭā śrīḥ — no manifest splendor is found [= 'asphuṭa-śrī'].
na vidyate sphuṭā śrīḥ — स्पष्ट शोभा नहीं है; yataḥ sā — जिसमें (वह)।
First, the plain reading. asphuṭa-śrī = 'she in whom no splendor shows' — the moonlight (Candrāvalī) whose beauty stays hidden. So far the word demeans the rival.
अर्थात् वह ऐसी है जिसमें स्पष्ट शोभा नहीं है — यही 'अस्फुटश्री' का अर्थ है।

arthaḥis [likewise] the meaning(यह भी) अर्थ है
sarva-uttama-śrīḥ api — 'she of the topmost splendor of all' too; arthaḥ — is a meaning [the same word yields].
sarva-uttama-śrīḥ api — सर्वोत्तम शोभावाली, यह भी; arthaḥ — अर्थ।
But — and this is Jīva's key move — the very same word also reads the opposite way. asphuṭa-śrī can mean 'she before whom no other splendor shows itself,' i.e. she whose beauty is supreme and eclipses every rival. So one word holds both 'no splendor' and 'supreme splendor.'
यह भी अर्थ है कि उसकी शोभा सर्वोत्तम है — इतनी कि उसके आगे और सब अप्रकट रह जाता है।

tathā api — even so; uktiḥ — the statement is made; sandigdha-arthatayā — in a way that keeps the sense ambiguous; ahaṅkāreṇa eva — precisely out of pride.
tathā api — फिर भी; sandigdha-arthatayā uktiḥ — संदिग्ध अर्थवाली रीति से कथन; ahaṅkāreṇa eva — अहंकार से ही।
Why phrase it so it can swing both ways? Precisely out of ahaṅkāra, says Jīva. Lalitā keeps the meaning doubtful on purpose: on its face the word seems to describe the moon, but the second sense lets Rādhā's supremacy show through. The ambiguity is the pride doing its work — exactly the quality this verse illustrates.
फिर भी यह द्व्यर्थक कथन जान-बूझकर किया गया है। और यही द्व्यर्थकता अहंकार (गर्व) के कारण ही है। यही दोहरी बात उसी गर्व का काम है।

lava-pada-uktiḥ api — the saying of the word 'lava' too; tena eva — is by that same pride.
lava-pada-uktiḥ api — 'लव' शब्द का प्रयोग भी; tena eva — उसी (अहंकार) से।
The belittling word 'lava' — a mere scrap of luster — comes from the same pride. Calling the moon's glow a 'trifle' is one more prideful jab at the rival, dressed as description.
'लव' (लेशमात्र) शब्द का प्रयोग भी उसी अहंकार के कारण है।

Jīva draws out the hidden layer of 'ākāśa.' Split it: ā-kāś = 'shines completely.' So 'ākāśa' is not the empty sky but the one who shines fully — Kṛṣṇa. The verse that sounds astronomical is really about Kṛṣṇa's sky-firmament and who lights it up.
'आकाश' शब्द की व्युत्पत्ति है — 'जो पूर्णरूप से सम्यक् प्रकाशित होता है'। इस पद से तो श्रीकृष्ण ही विवक्षित हैं।

Viśvanātha sets the scene. Lalitā (Rādhā's friend) has come into Candrāvalī's assembly. There Padmā (Candrāvalī's friend) is boasting: 'It's the moon-radiance alone that makes Kṛṣṇa's firmament beautiful' — meaning Candrāvalī alone graces Kṛṣṇa. Lalitā answers her with this verse. So the pride here is a retort between rival camps.
किसी अवसर पर चन्द्रावली की सभा में पहुँची ललिता, 'सोमा की आभा से ही कृष्ण-रूपी आकाश शोभा पाता है' — ऐसा कहनेवाली पद्मा के उत्तर में यह 'आकाशे' पद्य कहती है।
Speaker and addressee come from Viśvanātha: Lalitā answering Padmā in Candrāvalī's assembly. Padmā's own boast 'somābhayā' already puns on Candrāvalī ('string of moons').
वक्ता और श्रोता विश्वनाथ से मिलते हैं — चन्द्रावली की सभा में ललिता पद्मा को उत्तर देती है। पद्मा का अपना दावा 'सोमाभा' पहले से ही चन्द्रावली ('चन्द्रों की माला') पर श्लेष करता है।

Viśvanātha lays both layers of 'ākāśa' out plainly. Surface: the sky whose only beauty is its sapphire-blue. Second reading (pakṣe): 'ā-samyak-prakāśate,' the one who shines completely — Kṛṣṇa, himself sapphire-dark. And 'ruci-lava' he glosses two ways at once: a trace of radiance, and a trace of the power to please. So the moon/Candrāvalī gives Kṛṣṇa only a bare trace of either.

iti śrī-kṛṣṇa-pakṣe dhvaniḥthis is the suggested sense (dhvani) in the Kṛṣṇa readingऐसा श्रीकृष्ण-पक्ष में ध्वनि (व्यंग्यार्थ) है
asphuṭa-śrīḥ — 'unmanifest-splendored'; śrī-kṛṣṇa-saundaryeṇa tat-saundarya-ācchadanāt — because Kṛṣṇa's beauty covers over that beauty; iti śrī-kṛṣṇa-pakṣe dhvaniḥ — this is the suggestion in the Kṛṣṇa layer.

Now Viśvanātha reads 'asphuṭa-śrī' in the hidden layer. Why does the moon-radiance's splendor stay unshown? Because Kṛṣṇa's own beauty blankets it out. That is the dhvani (suggested undertone) on the Kṛṣṇa side: next to Kṛṣṇa's beauty, Candrāvalī's cannot even come out. Note this differs from Jīva, who read the same word as 'supremely splendid' — the two are not harmonized.

The last pun, spelled out. 'vṛṣabhānujā' on the surface is the sun of the month Jyeṣṭha (vṛṣa), before which any moonlight dies. In the second reading it is Śrī Rādhā, daughter of Vṛṣabhānu. Either way, when she 'rises,' the rival's glow ends.
'वृषभानुजा' — ज्योतिष-पक्ष में ज्येष्ठ मास के सूर्य से उदित होनेवाली, और दूसरे पक्ष में श्रीराधा — उदित होती है।

śleṣeṇa — by the pun; ākāśasya śrī-kṛṣṇasya ca — of the sky and of Kṛṣṇa; sā eva abhyudayaḥ — her very rising; parama-māṅgalyam — is the highest blessing.
śleṣeṇa — श्लेष के द्वारा; ākāśasya śrī-kṛṣṇasya ca — आकाश का और श्रीकृष्ण का; sā eva abhyudayaḥ parama-māṅgalyam — उसी का उदय परम मंगलमय।
Viśvanātha closes by naming the figure: śleṣa, one sentence carrying two worlds. For the sky, the sunrise of Jyeṣṭha is the crowning blessing; for Kṛṣṇa, Rādhā's rising is the crowning blessing. Same words, both true. That is the whole art of Lalitā's proud retort — she praises Rādhā's appearance as the supreme good, and the rival simply fades.
श्लेष के द्वारा — आकाश का और श्रीकृष्ण का — उसी (वृषभानुजा, अर्थात् राधा) का उदय परम मंगलमय है।
