āsāṁ sarvāsāṁ vraja-subhruvām — of all these fair-browed women of Vraja, every one; caturvidhaḥ bhedaḥ — there is a fourfold division.
Of all the gopīs of Vraja, without exception, there is a fourfold division.
subhrū, 'lovely-browed', is a stock kāvya word for a beautiful woman; here it names the gopīs collectively.

syāt — it would be; sva-pakṣaḥ, suhṛt-pakṣaḥ, taṭasthaḥ, pratipakṣakaḥ — one's own side, the friendly side, the neutral, and the opposing side.
The four are named: sva-pakṣa (one's own side), suhṛt-pakṣa (the friendly side), taṭastha (the neutral), and pratipakṣa (the opposing side).
taṭa-stha literally means 'standing on the bank' — one who looks on from the shore, neither in the water with you nor against you.

The friendly side and the neutral, though, are mentioned only in passing, as a side-matter.
prāsaṅgika = 'arising by the occasion' — a topic touched on because it comes up alongside the main one, not treated for its own sake.

Only two of the four actually give rasa: the own-side (sva-pakṣa) and the opposing-side (vipakṣa). The eva rules the other two out from this role.

Of these four, the details of the own-side have already been covered earlier. So this passage need not treat it again.

suhṛt-pakṣādi-bhedānāṁ — of the divisions beginning with the friendly side; dik eva kila darśyate — only a pointer, as it were, is here shown.
For the remaining divisions — friendly side, neutral, and opposing side — only a broad hint is given here, not a full treatment.
dik, literally 'a direction', is the commentator's word for 'just enough to point the way' — a sketch, not the whole map.

So Jīva sets it up: now Rūpa states the further ways all the gopīs of Vraja divide up — no one left out. That is what the verse beginning āsām does.

Viśvanātha sets it up: now Rūpa takes the divisions of both the sakhīs and the group-leaders — divisions grounded on how alike their loving moods are — condenses them, and lays them out in the verse beginning āsām.
bhāva-sājātya = 'sameness of kind in bhāva': gopīs fall on the same side when their inner mood toward Kṛṣṇa runs the same way.

Viśvanātha defines the friendly side: whoever secures a given gopī's desired end and fends off what she does not want is that gopī's suhṛt-pakṣa.

One might object: this same mark — securing what she wants, blocking what she doesn't — fits the own-side too, so how does it single out the friendly side? Viśvanātha grants the point, then answers: where nothing more than this is present, it is just suhṛt-pakṣa. The own-side carries something extra — unanimity of mind and one shared nature — a much fuller mark that belongs to it alone. So the bare helping-and-shielding defines only the friendly side.
